Redskins placed CB Phillip Buchanon (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.
The Redskins' nickel back in 2010, Buchanon was re-signed to a one-year contract after the lockout ended. He served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy before rejoining the team in October. Brandyn Thompson and Kareem Moore are candidates to take his spot on the roster. Redskins CB Phillip Buchanon's four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances will end on Monday.

Buchanon should take over as the Redskins' nickel back, though Kevin Barnes has played well in his absence. Buchanon suffered a shoulder injury in Washington's final preseason game, making it unclear if he'll be ready to go in Week 6 against the Eagles.

NFL suspended Redskins CB Phillip Buchanon four games for an undisclosed violation of league policy.

The suspension is league-issued, but there's no word yet on the reason. We suspect it pertains to the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. The Redskins will have to look elsewhere for help in the nickel during the first month.

Redskins re-signed CB Phillip Buchanon.

Buchanon turns 31 in September and will compete to keep his nickel back role. He was Washington's right corner on all passing downs last season, with Carlos Rogers moving inside to cover the slot. Buchanon didn't cover well, but accounted for five turnovers and his experience in the scheme will come in handy.

Free agent CB Philip Buchanon visited with the Jets this weekend.

Buchanon would be a nickel or dime corner if signed, not a starter. The Jets' interest in sub-package corners suggests expectations are low for 2010 first-rounder Kyle Wilson.

Free agent CB Phillip Buchanon wrote on Twitter Saturday that he is talking to the Redskins, Jets and Cardinals.

Both the Jets and Cardinals have added corners already this morning, so Buchanon may be headed back to Washington. He started five games a year ago, recording two interceptions.

The Jets are pursuing free agent CB Phillip Buchanon, according to Redskins beat writer John Keim.

Despite working for the Examiner, Keim's sources are respected on the 'Skins beat. While the Jets are working on possibly adding Nnamdi Asomugha and considering re-signing free agent Antonio Cromartie, it appears they are also looking to add secondary depth. Buchanon projects as a nickel corner.

The Redskins are expected to pursue a new contract for free agent CB Philip Buchanon.

With Carlos Rogers set to sign elsewhere, the 'Skins have just Kevin Barnes, Brandyn Thompson, and Byron Westbrook behind DeAngelo Hall. Buchanon won't receive heavy interest on the open market.

Phillip Buchanon is expected to be the Redskins' primary punt returner this season, according Gary Fitzgerald of Redskins.com.

Undrafted rookie Brandon Banks is easily the team's most explosive return candidate, but he doesn't have a role on offense. If the 'Skins opt to keep Roydell Williams or Bobby Wade as a fifth receiver, Buchanon will handle punts while Banks gets the roster squeeze.

Phillip Buchanon appears to have won the Redskins' nickel back job.

Incumbent nickel CB Justin Tryon was buried on the fourth team on the Skins' initial preseason depth chart, and second-year CB Kevin Barnes probably isn't ready for the major role. In passing situations, Carlos Rogers will cover the slot receiver, with Buchanon and DeAngelo Hall stationed out wide.

The Redskins are considering using newly acquired CB Phillip Buchanon on punt returns this season.

Buchanon was an All-American punt returner at Miami and brought back three for touchdowns during his Oakland days, but has done little of it since. The job is open after the Skins released Antwaan Randle El. DeAngelo Hall is another option, though he'd preferably not do it as an every-down corner.

Redskins signed CB Phillip Buchanon to a one-year, $1.5 million contract. He can earn another $750,000 in incentives.

Buchanon, going on 30, was better than given credit for in last year's atrocious Detroit secondary, but didn't have a single interception in 14 games. He will push Carlos Rogers, Justin Tryon, and Kevin Barnes for snaps in D.C.

Free agent CB Phillip Buchanon revealed that he's scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.

Buchanon was recently released by a Lions team with the worst collection of corners in the league. Should he sign on with the Redskins, he'd be limited to nickel-back duties and perhaps punt returns.

Profootballtalk.com reports that the Bengals and Vikings have shown interest in free agent CB Phillip Buchanon.

Buchanon was better than the Lions gave him credit for last year, and could offer value as a cheap signing for either corner-needy club. The Bengals are in search of a nickel back. Minnesota may need an opening-day starter.

Lions released CB Phillip Buchanon.

While Buchanon was highly inconsistent in his one-year Detroit stint, the move comes as a surprise because the Lions are so weak at the position. Buchanon was their best corner last year when all was said and done. The team now doesn't have a single cornerback on the roster of starting caliber.
