Free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha has decided to retire.
Asomugha will sign a one-day contract with the Raiders on Friday, retiring as a member of the organization that made him the No. 31 overall pick of the 2003 draft. Asomugha was a two-time All Pro for the Raiders, including in 2010. He hit the open market the following summer, and was the most sought after post-lockout free agent. Asomugha landed a five-year, $60 million deal from the Eagles that included $25 million guaranteed, but was a mammoth bust in the City of Brotherly Love, earning his release last March. He signed a one-year contract with the 49ers, but played just 149 snaps before being benched in Week 4. He was released in November. Asomugha is only 32, but simply has nothing left. Nnamdi Asomugha passed through waivers unclaimed.

The rapid demise of Asomugha has reached the tipping point as he's now on the street, free to be signed by anyone. This comes just 30 months after he was widely considered the top free agent available and the Eagles signed him to a five-year, $60 million contract. Since then, Asomugha has literally been one of the worst corners in the NFL.

49ers waived CB Nnamdi Asomugha.

They'll activate Eric Wright to replace Asomugha as cornerback depth. Appearing in just three games with San Francisco, 32-year-old Asomugha graded out negatively as both a pass and run defender in Pro Football Focus' ratings, before getting hurt and ultimately benched for Tramaine Brock. Brock has been outstanding at left corner in nickel packages. Asomugha will head to waivers, where he's unlikely to be claimed despite a manageable $1 million base salary.

With CB Eric Wright (reserve/NFI) nearing a return, 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha might be on the chopping block.

Wright was cleared to resume practicing Thursday and GM Trent Baalke said he'll be activated at some point ahead of Week 10. The 49ers have a Week 9 bye. Asomugha has been a healthy scratch the past three games and is the No. 5 corner. He's near the bottom of Pro Football Focus' corner ratings.

49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha has been a healthy scratch in three straight weeks.

Asomugha has lost No. 3 corner duties to Tramaine Brock and he's also playing behind undrafted rookie Darryl Morris. It's obvious that his struggles in Philly were not due to the Wide 9 scheme. Asomugha has been one of the league's worst corners ever since he left Oakland following the 2010 season.

49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha is undergoing an MRI on his right knee Monday.

Asomugha suffered the injury getting trucked by Ahmad Bradshaw on Sunday. The Niners' nickel back, Asomugha has graded out as a bottom-nine corner in Pro Football Focus' ratings. It wasn't just the scheme in Philly.

Nnamdi Asomugha has won the No. 3 corner job in San Francisco.

After a slow start to camp that saw Asomugha get called out by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, he's come on strong. Chris Culliver went down with a torn ACL and Asomugha has subsequently beaten out Tramaine Brock. It's a major role for the Niners as Culliver played on 64 percent of their defensive snaps in 2012. Asomugha was routinely roasted in Philly last year, grading out 101st of 113 qualifiers in ProFootballFocus' grades.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports CB Nnamdi Asomugha has a "really good shot" to make the 49ers' 53.

Per Rapoport, the 49ers plan to "limit his snaps" and "love the chip on his shoulder" after Asomugha was written off by many-a-football-watcher following his brutal 2012 season in Philly. Asomugha is betting on himself with a one-year, $1.325 million contract that includes zero guaranteed money. He's battling Tramaine Brock to be the nickel back behind Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown.

49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha says his "confidence is in a good place," but admits he was rattled by his disastrous two seasons in Philadelphia.

"I've been out there making plays and doing a lot of the things that I know I can do," Asomugha said. Asomugha's positive assessment of his play comes 10 days after DC Vic Fangio said he'd been a "mixed bag" through the early days of camp. Asomugha is still fighting for a roster spot.

According to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, CB Nnamdi Asomugha has been a "mixed bag" through one week of 49ers camp.

The comments don't sound promising. "He's had some good days out here and some days when we weren't sure if he'd be able to still have it," Fangio said. "I think we're kind of in between on him. ... Hopefully, he'll still be able to have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia. So I think the jury is still out there." Asomugha's one-year contract includes zero guaranteed money. He's very much competing for a roster spot.

49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio confirmed CB Nnamdi Asomugha will be on the roster bubble in training camp.

Eric Wright's addition certainly didn't help Asomugha's chances; they are both right cornerbacks. "It remains to be seen how well he can cover," Fangio said of the ex-All Pro. None of Asomugha's $1.325 million contract is guaranteed.

CSN Bay Area considers 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha "50-50" to earn a roster spot.

The same is true of CB Perrish Cox. The 49ers didn't address cornerback before their 11th and final pick of the draft, but have made no secret of the fact Asomugha will have to prove he's not finished to earn a roster spot. Asomugha will compete with Carlos Rogers for a starting job. A once-promising rookie for the Broncos before rape charges derailed his career, Cox was ineffective in 168 snaps on defense last season.

New 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha blamed the Eagles' scheme for his struggles over the last two seasons.

Asomugha played under strict man-to-man principles while earning a reputation as one of the best corners in the league with the Raiders. He was asked to do some different things in Philadelphia, but it's unfair to just blame the scheme for his woes. Asomugha consistently let receivers run right past him, showed declining make-up speed and struggled to track the ball. He ended up grading out 101st out of 113 NFL corners, according to ProFootballFocus.

49ers agreed to terms with CB Nnamdi Asomugha, formerly of the Eagles, on a one-year contract.

Asomugha chose the 49ers over the Saints and his former DC Rob Ryan. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal is worth "up to" $3 million, and includes a $1.35 million base salary. The rest is probably tied up in playing-time incentives. It includes no guaranteed money, per Asomugha's request. (He's getting $4 million guaranteed from the Eagles, anyway). CSN Bay Area reported last month that Asomugha wouldn't be guaranteed a starting job with the Niners, and would likely compete with Carlos Rogers. Rogers' $5.5 million salary may eventually necessitate his release, but for now Asomugha isn't locked into a starting role. If Asomugha is going to bounce-back, San Francisco is the place to do it, but it's possible his physical skills have eroded to the point he can no longer be even a serviceable player. Asomugha is going on age 32 and was burnt as regularly as any cornerback in football last season in Philadelphia.

CSN Bay Area expects free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha to compete with Carlos Rogers if he's signed by the 49ers.

Asomugha is reportedly "torn" between the 49ers and Saints, and this is surely a factor. Rogers took a big step back last season, but had a better year than Asomugha. If the money is close to equal, Asomugha would likely be better off reuniting with DC Rob Ryan in New Orleans. If Rogers was reduced to competing for his starting job, he'd almost certainly be asked to cut his $5.5 million salary.
