CSN Bay Area considers 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha "50-50" to earn a roster spot.
The same is true of CB Perrish Cox. The 49ers didn't address cornerback before their 11th and final pick of the draft, but have made no secret of the fact Asomugha will have to prove he's not finished to earn a roster spot. Asomugha will compete with Carlos Rogers for a starting job. A once-promising rookie for the Broncos before rape charges derailed his career, Cox was ineffective in 168 snaps on defense last season. New 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha blamed the Eagles' scheme for his struggles over the last two seasons.

Asomugha played under strict man-to-man principles while earning a reputation as one of the best corners in the league with the Raiders. He was asked to do some different things in Philadelphia, but it's unfair to just blame the scheme for his woes. Asomugha consistently let receivers run right past him, showed declining make-up speed and struggled to track the ball. He ended up grading out 101st out of 113 NFL corners, according to ProFootballFocus.

49ers agreed to terms with CB Nnamdi Asomugha, formerly of the Eagles, on a one-year contract.

Asomugha chose the 49ers over the Saints and his former DC Rob Ryan. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal is worth "up to" $3 million, and includes a $1.35 million base salary. The rest is probably tied up in playing-time incentives. It includes no guaranteed money, per Asomugha's request. (He's getting $4 million guaranteed from the Eagles, anyway). CSN Bay Area reported last month that Asomugha wouldn't be guaranteed a starting job with the Niners, and would likely compete with Carlos Rogers. Rogers' $5.5 million salary may eventually necessitate his release, but for now Asomugha isn't locked into a starting role. If Asomugha is going to bounce-back, San Francisco is the place to do it, but it's possible his physical skills have eroded to the point he can no longer be even a serviceable player. Asomugha is going on age 32 and was burnt as regularly as any cornerback in football last season in Philadelphia.

CSN Bay Area expects free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha to compete with Carlos Rogers if he's signed by the 49ers.

Asomugha is reportedly "torn" between the 49ers and Saints, and this is surely a factor. Rogers took a big step back last season, but had a better year than Asomugha. If the money is close to equal, Asomugha would likely be better off reuniting with DC Rob Ryan in New Orleans. If Rogers was reduced to competing for his starting job, he'd almost certainly be asked to cut his $5.5 million salary.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha is "torn" between signing with the Saints or 49ers.

The Saints are reportedly "pushing really hard to get him," although returning to the Bay Area might be Asomugha's preference. Asomugha is entering his age-32 season. He'd have a better chance to be a Week 1 starter in New Orleans.
Mar 25 - 2:15 PM

The Saints are "thought to remain high" on free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha, but talks are in a "holding pattern."

Asomugha is apparently deciding between the Saints and 49ers, and isn't known to have made any other visits. His drawn out decision-making process suggests neither team is offering beaucoup bucks. Asomugha will likely settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal.
Mar 22 - 9:48 AM

GM Trent Baalke says the 49ers are still considering free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha.

"Nnamdi is someone we're considering, as well as a lot of other players," Baalke said. "We had a great visit when he came in." Baalke also claimed Asomugha won't be guaranteed a starting job if he signs. "It's still about competition. It's still about earning your role within that locker room, within our team." Thus far, Asomugha has only visited the Saints and 49ers.
Mar 19 - 7:40 PM

GM Mickey Loomis says the Saints "hit it off" with free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha during his weekend visit.

Contrary to reports, Loomis also said DC Rob Ryan wasn't the only Saints official to meet with Asomugha. Loomis and coach Sean Payton met with Asomugha before departing for the league meetings in Phoenix. Asomugha would be teaming up with Keenan Lewis in a revamped Saints secondary if he followed his old coordinator Ryan to New Orleans.

Free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha is "out of the (Redskins') price range."

As is free agent CB Brent Grimes. If that's the case, it's unclear how the Redskins went about their pursuit of Aqib Talib before he re-upped in New England, and suggests Asomugha will sign for something other than bottom dollar. The Redskins need to get DeAngelo Hall back to restore some credibility at corner.
Mar 18 - 9:59 AM

Free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha will visit the Saints on Sunday.

Asomugha left his 49ers visit, but they remain in the hunt. Asomugha, 32 in July, played for new Saints DC Rob Ryan from 2004-08 in Oakland. Even after signing Keenan Lewis last week, New Orleans is looking for defensive backs. The New Orleans Times-Picayune thinks Patrick Robinson or Jabari Greer could be cut.
Mar 17 - 8:46 AM

NFL Network's Akbar Gbaja-Biamila says the 49ers are in "serious discussions" with both free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha and free agent S Charles Woodson.

Gbaja-Biamila, a former NFL player, was teammates with Asomugha and Woodson on the 2003 Raiders. Both veterans are well into their decline phase, but satisfy needs for the title-contending 49ers. Woodson is a cover safety that could help soften the loss of Dashon Goldson. Asomugha brings size they've lacked on the outside.
Mar 15 - 9:08 AM

Free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha is visiting the 49ers Thursday.

It's already been reported that there's mutual interest here. The Niners are in the market for a bigger corner and Asomugha could be looking to return "home." He played his college ball at Cal and spent the first eight years of his NFL career in Oakland. Asomugha could come very cheap as he's still collecting $4 million from the Eagles in 2013 no matter what.
Mar 14 - 9:54 AM

The Saints are "in on" free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.

The Saints join the Texans, 49ers, Broncos and Cardinals in pursuit of the former Eagle. Asomugha would be reuniting with DC Rob Ryan in New Orleans, who coached Asomugha in Oakland from 2004-08.
Mar 13 - 5:56 PM

A source tells ProFootballTalk.com that free agent Nnamdi Asomugha's potential destinations include the Texans, 49ers, Broncos and Cardinals.

Two years ago, Asomugha was the No. 1 free agent available and landed a $60 million deal with the Eagles. Now he's on the free agency tour once again, except with a fraction of the appeal. This report sounds like an agent trying to drum up interest for his client. Asomugha is certainly not a logical candidate in Houston, where Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson are locked in as starters. But there is reportedly mutual interest with the Niners, who are looking to add size to their corner corps. Asomugha played his college ball at Cal and spent the first eight years of his career in Oakland.
Mar 13 - 4:45 PM

Eagles released CB Nnamdi Asomugha.

It's fascinating to examine where Asomugha ranks among the biggest free-agent busts in NFL history. He's awfully high up there. Signed to a five-year, $60 million contract in 2011 that made him the league's top-paid cornerback, Asomugha gave Philly one season of mediocre play and another of truly putrid performance. An easy burn victim in 2012, Asomugha came away with 55 tackles and one interception. Going on age 32, Asomugha's recovery speed and confidence seem to have evaporated. There were rumors in Philadelphia that he's also lost his passion for the game.
