Chargers signed WR Griff Whalen, formerly of the Dolphins.
A 26-year-old journeyman, Whalen is on his third team over the past two seasons, having also spent time in Indianapolis and Miami. He was among the Dolphins' final cuts in early September. Whalen will give San Diego some depth behind Travis Benjamin, Tyrell Williams, Dontrelle Inman, and Isaiah Burse. Sep 19 - 4:05 PM

Dolphins waived WR Griff Whalen.

He lost his roster spot to Justin Hunter, which is a terribly depressing sentence. Whalen was widely expected to stick on the roster because of his relationship with OC Clyde Christensen and his veteran presence in a very young receiver room. He should pop up somewhere else in the near future.

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero believes Dolphins WR Griff Whalen is "on course" for a roster spot.

Dolphins OC Clyde Christensen was the QBs coach with Whalen in Indianapolis, so he might have had a leg up to start. Still, he has reportedly been solid in camp, and he is an asset on special teams. Despite the roster spot, Whalen is unlikely to come into fantasy value this season.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Griff Whalen has a "legitimate chance" to be the Dolphins' No. 4 receiver.

OC Clyde Christensen was the QBs coach when Whalen was in Indianapolis, which should help as he adjusts to the Dolphins' new scheme. Whalen was never a huge playmaker in Indy, but coach Adam Gase is impressed by his versatility. "He has the flexibility to go outside, but his big thing was third downs in Indy," said Gase. "This was an opportunity for us to bring in a guy who we thought was a good player who plays special teams, has done some returning in the past."

Dolphins signed WR Griff Whalen.

Whalen has been out of the league since getting waived from the Colts in January. With Greg Jennings and Rishard Matthews gone, he'll compete for Miami's No. 4 receiver job behind Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, and Kenny Stills. 26-year-old Whalen can also return kicks.

Colts waived WR Griff Whalen off injured reserve.

Whalen was placed on I.R. two weeks ago with broken ribs. The 25-year-old is now free to latch on elsewhere in time for the offseason program.
Jan 1 - 11:48 AM

Colts placed WR Griff Whalen on injured reserve with broken ribs, ending his season.

His season ends with 19 catches for 205 yards and one touchdown. Whalen, 25, is a borderline NFL talent whose familiarity with the Colts' coaching staff and "grit" have kept him around for three years. An impending exclusive rights free agent, Whalen will return to compete for a roster spot in 2016.

Griff Whalen caught 5-of-6 targets for 73 yards Week 9 against the Broncos.

Whalen was tackled inside the five in the second quarter and converted two important third downs in the second half. Whalen now has 11 targets over the last two games after seeing four total in the first seven weeks. He should be pushing Andre Johnson for snaps.

Griff Whalen is listed with the first-team offense on the Colts' first unofficial depth chart.

We wouldn't read too far into it. Both T.Y. Hilton and Phillip Dorsett can man the slot, so there isn't an opening for Whalen in Indy's base offense. Whalen is far from assured of cracking the 53-man roster.

Colts signed WR/KR Griff Whalen off their practice squad.

Whalen takes the place of ILB Josh McNary, who was placed on the Exempt/Commissioner's List. Whalen had two catches in 10 games for the Colts this season and was a primary return man before Josh Cribbs was signed.

Colts re-signed WR/KR Griff Whalen to their practice squad.

Whalen was released after the Colts added return specialist Josh Cribbs. He found no interest on the open market and settled for a taxi squad spot back in Indy.

Colts waived WR Griff Whalen.

Whalen was waived to make room for RB Zurlon Tipton on the active roster. Primarily used as a returner this season, Whalen was made expendable when the Colts signed Josh Cribbs earlier this week. Whalen had two catches on three targets this season.

Colts WR Griff Whalen caught 2-of-3 targets for 40 yards in Saturday night's third preseason game.

He's up to eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown on the preseason. Whalen offers little on-field upside, but has connections to Andrew Luck and OC Pep Hamilton from Stanford, increasing his chances of landing a roster spot.

Griff Whalen caught five passes for 32 yards and one touchdown in the Colts' second preseason game on Saturday.

With Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton sitting out, Whalen ran as the slot man with the starters. It's a position that sees a ton of targets in OC Pep Hamilton's offense. Whalen saw eight balls come his way. Whalen reeled in 22 passes over the final five games last season, and has good chemistry with Andrew Luck as they are former college teammates. He's a scrappy backup for the Colts.

Griff Whalen caught five passes for 67 yards in Indianapolis' Divisional Round loss to the Patriots.

Whalen heads into the offseason having caught 22 passes over his final five games. He made the most of his second chance after being re-signed on December 14. Ideally, the Colts would find a more-talented receiver to man the slot in 2014, but Whalen has certainly earned a chance at the job. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound second-year pro has proven to be a surer pair of hands over the middle than fellow Stanford alum Coby Fleener. Whalen is worth a look in Dynasty leagues.
