Colts re-signed WR/KR Griff Whalen to their practice squad.

Whalen was released after the Colts added return specialist Josh Cribbs. He found no interest on the open market and settled for a taxi squad spot back in Indy.

Colts waived WR Griff Whalen.

Whalen was waived to make room for RB Zurlon Tipton on the active roster. Primarily used as a returner this season, Whalen was made expendable when the Colts signed Josh Cribbs earlier this week. Whalen had two catches on three targets this season.

Colts WR Griff Whalen caught 2-of-3 targets for 40 yards in Saturday night's third preseason game.

He's up to eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown on the preseason. Whalen offers little on-field upside, but has connections to Andrew Luck and OC Pep Hamilton from Stanford, increasing his chances of landing a roster spot.

Griff Whalen caught five passes for 32 yards and one touchdown in the Colts' second preseason game on Saturday.

With Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton sitting out, Whalen ran as the slot man with the starters. It's a position that sees a ton of targets in OC Pep Hamilton's offense. Whalen saw eight balls come his way. Whalen reeled in 22 passes over the final five games last season, and has good chemistry with Andrew Luck as they are former college teammates. He's a scrappy backup for the Colts.

Griff Whalen caught five passes for 67 yards in Indianapolis' Divisional Round loss to the Patriots.

Whalen heads into the offseason having caught 22 passes over his final five games. He made the most of his second chance after being re-signed on December 14. Ideally, the Colts would find a more-talented receiver to man the slot in 2014, but Whalen has certainly earned a chance at the job. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound second-year pro has proven to be a surer pair of hands over the middle than fellow Stanford alum Coby Fleener. Whalen is worth a look in Dynasty leagues.

Griff Whalen caught two passes for 26 yards in Indy's Wild Card win over the Chiefs.

Whalen drew six targets, primarily out of the slot. He should be entrenched as the Colts' No. 3 receiver for the remainder of the playoffs. Whalen has a bead on a 2014 roster spot.

Griff Whalen caught four passes for 32 yards and a touchdown in the Colts' Week 17 win over Jacksonville.

Playing over Darrius Heyward-Bey recently as a slot receiver in the Colts' sub-package offense, Whalen hauled in a third-quarter touchdown pass from Andrew Luck to give Indy a 27-3 lead. The Stanford alum and Pep Hamilton favorite will fill a similar role in the playoffs for Indianapolis.

Griff Whalen caught seven passes for 80 yards in Week 16 against the Chiefs.

Whalen reeled in seven of his team-high eight targets and did a ton of work after the catch. The other target was an end-zone shot. Since being promoted from the practice squad two week ago, Whalen has been running as the No. 3 receiver ahead of LaVon Brazill. The 23-year-old has some skills as a slot receiver. He's worth monitoring in dynasty formats this offseason. Whalen should continue to have a prominent role on offense for the remainder of 2013.

Colts WR Griff Whalen has a strained calf, but is expected to be "fine" for Week 16.

Signed off the practice squad on Saturday, Whalen caught four passes for 45 yards against the Texans, running ahead of Darrius Heyward-Bey as a pass catcher. DHB was largely called on to block. Whalen has likely secured a roster spot for the rest of the season, but remains miles from fantasy relevance.

Griff Whalen caught four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown in Indianapolis' Week 15 win over the Texans.

Promoted off the practice squad on Saturday, Whalen ran as the Colts' No. 3 receiver in the absence of LaVon Brazill. The performance likely earned Whalen a roster spot through the end of the season, but he'll remain well off the fantasy radar for Week 16.

Colts promoted WR Griff Whalen from the practice squad.

Whalen is needed as insurance just in case LaVon Brazill (foot) can't play Sunday against the Texans. CB Jalil Brown was waived to make room.

Colts waived WR Griff Whalen.

TE Justice Cunningham was promoted from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move. It's a surprising move in that Whalen had been playing heavy snaps since Reggie Wayne (ACL) went down, but unsurprising in that he hadn't been playing good football. Whalen is a catch-and-fall specialist out of the slot who doesn't generate consistent separation. His release should mean more snaps for LaVon Brazill, and possibly Da'Rick Rogers. Both players are more talented than Whalen.

Griff Whalen caught one pass for six yards in the Colts' Week 11 win over the Titans.

Whalen's lone grab moved the chains on an important 3rd-and-5 early in the third quarter. He drew only three targets. Whalen should continue to get looks in the slot, but is no better than the fourth option in the passing game, and has zero upside in fantasy leagues.
Fri, Nov 15, 2013 12:38:00 AM

Griff Whalen caught three passes for 36 yards in Indianapolis' Week 10 loss to the Rams.

Whalen also took a huge shot to the chest/shoulder area, but wasn't announced as having an injury. He should be fine for No. 3 duties in Thursday night's game against the Titans, but won't be a fantasy option even as the Colts continue to wait for someone to step up on offense.
