The Oakland defense has surrendered 189.0 rushing yards and 28.7 points per game over the last three weeks.
The brutal defensive performances have continued a season-long trend for Oakland and leave the Raiders D/ST miles from the fantasy radar. Week 12 will see Oakland travel to Tennessee, where the Raiders D/ST will not be a recommended fantasy option. Nov 29 - 12:28 AM

The Oakland Raiders travel to Detroit in Week 11 to face the Lions, who lead the NFL in turnovers.

Detroit has coughed up the ball 21 times in nine games and is the owner of the NFL's worst running game, averaging just 66.9 yards on the ground each week. The Oakland secondary has struggled this season, but this group will be worth a look in fantasy leagues this week as a potential streaming target in hopes that they can capitalize on Detroit's turnover-prone ways.
Nov 22 - 3:05 AM

The Oakland Raiders will host the Minnesota Vikings in Week 10, who could be without starting QB Teddy Bridgewater (concussion).

Oakland has a miserable pass defense, but the Raiders D/ST could creep into streaming territory if Minnesota backup Shaun Hill is forced to start. Bridgewater's Week 10 status won't be officially announced until later this week, but the situation should be monitored as details surface. For now, the Raiders D/ST is a bottom-tier option for Week 10 but they would receive a bump if Hill is under center for the Vikings.
Nov 11 - 4:59 AM

The Oakland defense is preparing to face New York Jets running back Chris Ivory, who is one of seven NFL backs with 500 or more rushing yards this season.

The Jets are the NFL's third-best rushing team, piling up 136.5 yards on the ground each week, and the Raiders are aware of Ivory's toughness. "We all have to get to the ball and swarm tackle him, because he has an ability to break tackles. He gives all the effort he can," said Oakland LB Curtis Lofton. The Raiders D/ST has been surprisingly stout against the run this season but will be just outside the top-12 fantasy D/ST options this week.
Oct 31 - 6:07 PM

The Oakland D/ST travels to San Diego to face the Chargers in Week 7, who lead the NFL with 433 yards of total offense per game.

The Chargers offense is coming off a 548-yard effort in Week 6 at Green Bay, which included 503 passing yards from quarterback Philip Rivers. The San Diego offense has averaged 464 total yards over the last three weeks and will make the Oakland D/ST a bottom-tier Week 7 fantasy option.
Oct 23 - 4:26 AM

The Oakland Raiders head into their bye week allowing just 83.2 rushing yards per game, the fourth-best mark among NFL teams.

Oakland is also allowing a mere 3.6 yards per carry to opposing rushers and held Denver to 2.4 yards per tote on 18 carries in Week 5. Despite the success against the run, the pass defense of the Raiders still leaves a lot to be desired and the Oakland D/ST won't be a viable fantasy option in Week 7 as they travel to San Diego.
Oct 17 - 12:40 AM

The Oakland Raiders are allowing opposing offenses to convert on third down at a 45.6 percent clip.

The 45.6 percent mark is 29th among NFL teams and has contributed to the defensive struggles of the Raiders in 2015. DC Ken Norton spoke about the issue this week, saying, "First and second down play hasn’t been bad. Defending deep balls has been okay, but there are areas were need to improve on to be a really good defense, and it starts with getting off the field." While the offense in Oakland finally has some promise, the defense still has work to do. With the Denver Broncos visiting Oakland in Week 5, the Raiders D/ST won't be a viable fantasy option.
Oct 9 - 4:16 PM

The Oakland Raiders will continue to focus on the pass-rush benefits of the 3-4 defensive alignment moving forward.

The Oakland defense is allowing a league-worst 414.7 yards per game, but did come up with five sacks in Week 3 against Cleveland. The Raiders spent more time in a 3-4 defense than usual last week per the San Francisco Chronicle, and DC Ken Norton reportedly plans to continue that trend on Sunday against Chicago as the alignment allows defensive standouts Aldon Smith and Khalil Mack to attack opposing quarterbacks. Despite the defensive changes, the Raiders D/ST will not be an advisable fantasy option in Week 4.
Oct 2 - 2:24 AM

The Oakland Raiders defense leads the NFL in yards allowed, giving up 444.5 yards per game through two weeks.

The Raiders were locked in a shootout last week at home against Baltimore, with Joe Flacco throwing for 384 yards and two touchdowns. This Sunday, the Oakland defense will square off with Josh McCown and the Cleveland Browns in the first Raiders road game of the season. Even a matchup with McCown and the Browns can't dig the Oakland D/ST out of the depths of Week 3 fantasy options with this group giving up huge yardage each week and carrying a sack total of zero through two games.
Sep 25 - 1:12 AM

The Oakland Raiders will face Baltimore backup left tackle James Hurst in Week 2, with starter Eugene Monroe (concussion) ruled out.

Oakland failed to record a sack in their Week 1 debacle against Cincinnati, but should have a shot to pressure Joe Flacco this week with Monroe sitting out. Creating pressure would be a solid first step for the Oakland defense that gave up nearly 400 yards of offense to the Bengals last week. The Raiders D/ST will be an afterthought in fantasy leagues on Sunday.
Sep 20 - 1:34 AM

The Oakland Raiders defense added a new piece as they signed LB Aldon Smith to a one-year contract.

ESPN's Ed Werder reported that Smith is planning on playing in Week 1, which would give the Raiders D/ST a better chance at stuffing the Cincinnati offense on Sunday. Smith's recent record with law enforcement has been well documented, but as long as he stays on the field, the fantasy outlook of the Oakland D/ST appears a bit brighter.
Sep 11 - 10:35 PM

The Oakland Raiders claimed former Seattle safety Keenan Lambert off waivers.

CSN Bay Area notes that the safety spot was a position of need for the Raiders, with only three safeties currently on the Oakland roster. Lambert will provide some depth to the Oakland secondary, but fantasy owners will be wise to avoid the Raiders D/ST this season, as the silver and black defense was dead last in the NFL in points allowed in 2014.
Sep 6 - 2:46 PM

The San Francisco Chronicle expects Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals passing attack to test the unproven cornerbacks of the Oakland Raiders when the two squads face off in Week 3 of the preseason.

The Oakland defense accumulated just nine interceptions and was dead last in the NFL in points allowed per game in 2014, leaving them far off the fantasy radar when D/ST units are being selected in drafts. Sunday’s meeting with Palmer will be a tough matchup for the young Oakland corners, but the Raiders are hoping new defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. can begin to change the defensive culture in Oakland after serving as the linebackers coach for the stout Seattle Seahawks defense over the last five seasons.
Aug 30 - 1:59 AM

Sources within the Raiders' organization have told the San Francisco Chronicle that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan could be fired within the week.

Ryan is scheduled to meet with owner Al Davis on Wednesday. There were high hopes for an Oakland defense that was returning 11 starters from the third-ranked unit from 2006, but the team has been obliterated by the run. They rank 26th in total defense this season, but Ryan would probably find work quickly if let go.
