Falcons DE Derrick Shelby (Achilles') was back on the practice field Tuesday.
Shelby was almost certainly limited less than eight months removed from an Achilles' tear, but it is still a big step in the correct direction. A disappointment even before the injury, Shelby may need a strong camp to keep his roster spot. Tue, Jun 6, 2017 12:47:00 PM

Falcons placed DE Derrick Shelby on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

Shelby signed a "four-year, $18 million" contract in March. He played 244 snaps through six games, registering zero sacks as he struggled to generate pressure. Shelby is due $3 million next season after making only $1 million in 2015. The Falcons may ask Shelby to accept a pay cut coming off his severe injury.

Newly-signed DE Derrick Shelby will play defensive tackle in sub packages for the Falcons.

"Derrick Shelby has real good versatility to play defensive tackle in our nickel package, defensive end," coach Dan Quinn said. "I see Derrick's role as really increasing as a pass-rusher, especially on the inside." A power rusher, Shelby has the strength to stand up against the run inside and also push the pocket against interior linemen. Signed to a four-year, $18 million contract early in free agency, Shelby could prove to be one of this year's biggest bargains.

Falcons signed DE Derrick Shelby, formerly of the Dolphins, to a four-year, $18 million contract.

Shelby was one of the more underrated free agents on the market. After the Dolphins lost LE Cameron Wake to a torn Achilles' last season, Shelby stepped in as the starter opposite Olivier Vernon and graded out as Pro Football Focus' 10th-ranked 4-3 end, playing really well against the run. He's shown flashes of pass-rush juice over the past three seasons, and the Falcons are banking on him turning it up a notch as a full-time starter opposite Vic Beasley.

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett considers pass rusher New Orleans' biggest need.

Triplett doesn't expect the cap-strapped Saints to go out and spend big in free agency, but he does mention free agent DEs Derrick Shelby, William Hayes, Chris Long, and Adrian Clayborn as the tier GM Mickey Loomis could target. Shelby has nine sacks over the past three seasons as a part-time player, but graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 10 overall 4-3 end last season, receiving really strong marks for both his run defense and pass-rush ability.

Derrick Shelby will take over as the Dolphins' starting left end following Cameron Wake's Achilles' tear.

Shelby has actually played more snaps than Wake up until this point, primarily playing on early downs as a run stopper. He'll now become an every-down defensive end. Shelby amassed 5.5 sacks as a part-time player across the 2013-2014 seasons, but he has not logged any sacks through seven games this year.

The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero expects 2015 to be contract-year DE Derrick Shelby's final season with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins' No. 3 end behind starters LE Cameron Wake and RE Olivier Vernon, Shelby is playing on a one-year, $2.35 million deal. Shelby played 397 snaps last season and graded out as PFF's No. 9 end against the run but near the bottom as a pass-rusher. With Vernon also headed for free agency and a bunch of money tied up in Ndamukong Suh, the Fins may not be able to afford Shelby.

Dolphins re-signed DE Derrick Shelby to a one-year, $2.35 million contract.

A restricted free agent, Shelby was tendered at the second-round level. A 2012 undrafted free agent, Shelby has appeared in at least 15 games each of the past three seasons. He notched two sacks across 420 snaps last season. He'll remain a role player in 2015.

Dolphins assigned a second-round tender to restricted free agent DE Derrick Shelby.

A core rotational piece on Miami's deep defensive line, Shelby has 5.5 sacks over the past two seasons and just turned 26 years old. He'll try to earn more snaps in 2015 before hitting unrestricted free agency next offseason.

Dolphins DE Derrick Shelby has been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

Shelby was arrested early Saturday morning at a Fort Lauderdale club. He was reportedly beaten down by the cops and tased three times. Note that this is the Dolphins suspending Shelby before due process is complete, not the NFL.

Dolphins DE Derrick Shelby was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest early Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale.

The Dolphins are on their bye week. Shelby was arrested at 2:28 AM and released on bond eight hours later. The police say Shelby, 25, wasn't violent. But his mug shot looks like he took some blows to the face. Shelby is a key reserve on Miami's defensive line. He has six tackles and two sacks through four games.

Dolphins third-year DE Derrick Shelby underwent an offseason knee scope.

It's no longer an issue, but it's noteworthy. Shelby is a coaching-staff favorite and will handle third-end duties behind Olivier Vernon and Cameron Wake. He registered 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles across 446 snaps last season.

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson believes DE Derrick Shelby should see more snaps while DE Dion Jordan is suspended.

Jackson said Shelby is a favorite of coach Joe Philbin and thinks he will be first in line to fill Jordan's role in the defense. Shelby actually played more snaps than Jordan last season -- 446 to 339 -- and was arguably the better player. Shelby recorded 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2013.

Dolphins coaches have been pleased with second-year DE Derrick Shelby's progression.

The Miami Herald reports Shelby, who went undrafted out of Utah, is "entrenched" on the second-team defense, and his prospects of making the 53-man roster are "very, very good." He'll be Miami's No. 4 end this year.
