Browns FS Tashaun Gipson said he's "perfectly fine" playing out this season on his one-year, $2.356 restricted free agent tender.
Gipson sees the light of the tunnel in the form of unrestricted free agency next March. If he plays like he did last season -- when opposing quarterbacks had a passer rating of just 41.9 throwing into his coverage and he recorded six picks in 11 games -- Gipson will command at least $6-7 million annually. ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi expects the Browns and FS Tashaun Gipson to work out a long-term deal.

Grossi could be hoping more than reporting here. Gipson is a rising star the Browns should be fighting to extend, but there have been zero signs Cleveland is interested in signing him to a long-term deal. At this point, Gipson may be more interested in testing 2016 free agency. Gipson will earn $2.356 million in 2015 after reluctantly signing his second-round tender.
Jun 13 - 10:22 AM

Browns re-signed restricted free agent FS Tashaun Gipson to a one-year, $2.356 million contract.

Gipson skipped voluntary workouts over his second-round tender, but would have risked losing $1.73M if he didn't sign by Monday's deadline. The Browns aren't expected to extend Gipson, leaving him no choice but to play out 2015 at the relatively modest price tag. Gipson will be a hot commodity if allowed to hit free agency next offseason. Not yet 25 years old, Gipson has 11 interceptions -- including two pick-sixes -- over the past two seasons and has developed into an elite coverage safety.
Jun 12 - 6:36 PM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson will not report to this week's voluntary OTAs, as expected.

Gipson still hasn't signed his $2.356 million restricted free agent tender. He's hoping the Browns cave and give him a long-term extension, but they've made it clear that's not happening. Expect Gipson to sign the tender by the June 15 deadline, play out this season and hit free agency in 2016. Gipson was a top-10 safety in PFF's 2014 ratings.
May 26 - 8:53 AM

ESPN Cleveland believes Browns FS Tashaun Gipson may be intent on entering the free agent market in 2016.

Gipson has been skipping voluntary minicamp. The Browns reportedly have concerns about his 2014 MCL injury and aren’t expected to extend him. Gipson has until June 15 to sign his second-round tender or he'll risk losing $1.73 million.
May 23 - 9:12 PM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson has until June 15 to sign his restricted free agent tender.

Gipson is holding out of minicamp in an attempt to get a long-term deal. He’s yet to decide if he’ll sign his second-round tender ($2.356 million), but Cleveland holds all the leverage in contract talks. The Browns can reduce Gipson’s offer to $627,000 if he doesn’t sign by the June 15 deadline.
May 23 - 3:43 PM

Browns CB Joe Haden does not think FS Tashaun Gipson will hold out of mandatory team activities.

Haden said Gipson will be back by training camp "for sure." Gipson is upset he was only offered a second-round tender by the Browns and is trying to force a long-term deal. Only 24 and a top-10 safety according to Pro Football Focus last season, Gipson will be a hot commodity if he is allowed to hit the open market next offseason. Cleveland would be wise to work out an extension quickly.
May 16 - 12:21 PM

Per ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi, Browns restricted free agent FS Tashaun Gipson could have a lengthy holdout.

Gipson can no longer sign an offer sheet with another club after the deadline passed last Friday. But he's still prepared to dig his feet in, as the two sides "disagree" on money. Gipson, 24, was a top-10 safety at Pro Football Focus last season and opposing quarterbacks had a passer rating of just 41.9 throwing into his coverage. He'd command $6 million-plus annually on the open market.
Apr 29 - 8:48 AM

Browns restricted free agent FS Tashaun Gipson is skipping the beginning of the offseason program.

Unsigned players sometimes sign waivers that allow them to attend, but Gipson has zero reason to show up for the "voluntary" sessions. Teams have until Friday to sign Gipson to an offer sheet. Still only 25 (in August), Gipson has intercepted 11 passes in 27 games over the past two seasons.
Apr 20 - 1:35 PM

Teams have until Friday to sign Browns restricted free agent FS Tashaun Gipson to an offer sheet.

It's a bit surprising Gipson hasn't attracted any attention even though the Browns only placed a second-round tender on him. A rising stud, he's a candidate to break the bank if and when he hits the open market. If no one makes Gipson an offer before Friday, the Browns will have a steal at $2.356 million in 2015. For now, he's staying away from workouts as he's technically unsigned.
Apr 20 - 11:37 AM

The Browns are expected to explore a long-term deal with restricted free agent FS Tashaun Gipson.

Gipson currently has a second-round tender from the Browns, but is a candidate for an extension coming off his breakout 2014. Prior to missing the final five games with a knee injury, Gipson established himself as a playmaker in Cleveland's secondary. Gipson was a top-10 safety in PFF's year-end ratings and finished behind only Glover Quin with six interceptions.
Mar 21 - 7:14 PM

Browns tendered qualifying offers to restricted free agents FS Tashaun Gipson, DB Johnson Bademosi, DL Ishmaa’ily Kitchen and LB Craig Robertson.

Gipson is the lone interesting name here as an emerging playmaker who has 11 interceptions and 19 pass breakups over his last 26 games. The Browns should be looking to do a long-term deal before he hits unrestricted free agency a year from now -- or before another team shows interest in an RFA offer shortly. Gipson was a top-10 safety in PFF's grades last year.
Mar 9 - 3:41 PM

Browns placed S Tashaun Gipson on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

Gipson had expressed optimism he would be able to play again this season after spraining his MCL Week 12 against the Falcons, but the Browns have little reason to rush back their emerging star safety. A restricted free agent following the season, Gipson still leagues the league with six interceptions despite missing the last three games. Cleveland will likely look to lock Gipson up to a long-term deal this spring. The Browns signed OLB Scott Solomon off their practice squad in a corresponding roster move.
Sat, Dec 20, 2014 11:59:00 AM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson (knee) expects to return this season.

Gipson is two weeks removed from a torn MCL. He was expected to miss 6-8 games, but says he's hoping to return in Week 16. That would likely be a best-case scenario, and Gipson remains far from a lock to play again this year. Jim Leonhard will continue to start against the Bengals.
Tue, Dec 9, 2014 11:35:00 AM

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Browns FS Tashaun Gipson has been diagnosed with a torn MCL, and is done for the regular season.

Specifically, he'll be sidelined 6-8 weeks. Per Rapsheet, Gipson has avoided ACL damage, however, and could return for the postseason if the Browns elect to hold him off injured reserve. It's a huge blow for 7-4 Cleveland, as Gipson's six interceptions lead the league. Gipson has graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 safety. Jim Leonhard and Jordan Poyer are the next men up on the depth chart.
