Browns FS Tashaun Gipson (knee) expects to return this season.
Gipson is two weeks removed from a torn MCL. He was expected to miss 6-8 games, but says he's hoping to return in Week 16. That would likely be a best-case scenario, and Gipson remains far from a lock to play again this year. Jim Leonhard will continue to start against the Bengals. Dec 9 - 11:35 AM

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Browns FS Tashaun Gipson has been diagnosed with a torn MCL, and is done for the regular season.

Specifically, he'll be sidelined 6-8 weeks. Per Rapsheet, Gipson has avoided ACL damage, however, and could return for the postseason if the Browns elect to hold him off injured reserve. It's a huge blow for 7-4 Cleveland, as Gipson's six interceptions lead the league. Gipson has graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 safety. Jim Leonhard and Jordan Poyer are the next men up on the depth chart.
Nov 24 - 1:18 PM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson was forced from Cleveland's Week 12 game against the Falcons with a right knee injury, and will not return.

Gipson collided with Joe Haden in mid-air, and immediately went down clutching his right knee. He tried to hobble off the field before collapsing. The cart was brought out, and Gipson was visibly distraught as he headed to the locker room. It's quite possibly a season-ending knee injury for a player who entered Week 12 leading the league in interceptions. The Browns' defense keeps taking body blows.
Nov 23 - 3:30 PM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson (concussion) has been upgraded to probable after completing the league's concussion protocol.

Gipson was always optimistic he would be able to play. With four interceptions over his last four games, Gipson will attempt to pick off first-time starter Ryan Mallett on Sunday.
Nov 15 - 11:45 AM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 11 against the Texans after getting in a limited practice on Friday.

Gipson is still in the concussion protocol, and would need to pass through several steps before being allowed to play against Houston. Gipson sounded optimistic, but he said his playing status is in the "doctors' and trainers' hands." Gipson has four interceptions over his last four games, and would be a great bet to keep his turnover streak alive against first-time starter Ryan Mallett on Sunday.
Nov 15 - 9:42 AM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson is in the concussion protocol.

Gipson suffered a concussion late in the Browns' win over the Bengals. He didn't practice Wednesday and should be considered questionable for Week 11. Jim Leonhard would likely start if Gipson misses time.
Nov 12 - 1:18 PM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson sprained his left knee during practice Friday.

Coach Mike Pettine called the injury minor, and said Gipson could return by midweek. A 2012 UDFA out of Wyoming, Gipson recorded 95 tackles and five interceptions over 15 starts last season. Jordan Poyer filled in for Gipson during practice Friday, but newly-signed Jim Leonhard would likely handle the free safety duties if Gipson is forced to miss any regular season games.
Aug 2 - 9:06 AM

Browns FS Tashaun Gipson missed 17 tackles in 2013.

Gipson managed an impressive 95 total tackles in his second season, but missing on over 15 percent of his tackle opportunities is a liability for the Browns secondary. Gipson is tentatively the starter at safety along with newly-signed Donte Whitner.
Apr 11 - 10:01 AM

Tashaun Gipson has been named the Browns starting free safety.

Gipson beat out Johnson Bademosi and Jamoris Slaughter to win the right to line up next to hard-hitting strong safety T.J. Ward. Gipson appeared in 10 games last year, recording one interception and 23 tackles. He graded out as ProFootballFocus' No. 42 safety among 88 qualifiers.

The Browns listed Tashaun Gipson as the starting free safety on their first unofficial depth chart.

Gipson, a second-year UDFA, entered training camp as the favorite to start, and he's done nothing to lose it. The Browns have been impressed with fellow second-year safety Johnson Bademosi, and he's going to get a shot to overtake Gipson. We'll get a better feel once preseason games start.

Second-year UDFA Tashaun Gipson enters Browns camp as the favorite to start at free safety.

His only real competitors are converted CB Johnson Bademosi, another 2012 UDFA, and sixth-round pick Jamoris Slaughter. Slaughter was a linebacker-safety hybrid at Notre Dame and is unlikely to suddenly become a center-fielder in the NFL. Gipson practiced as the starter throughout spring workouts.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer confirms Tashaun Gipson has the "early lead" for the Browns' free safety job.

Sixth-round pick Jamoris Slaughter (Achilles') will be "worked in" once he's healthy, but we don't expect him to have a legitimate shot at the starting job as a rookie. Johnson Bademosi and Buster Skrine have also seen time at the safety spot next to T.J. Ward. Gipson started three games last season.

Browns GM Mike Lombardi said Tashaun Gipson remains the starting free safety.

The Browns used a sixth-round pick on Jamoris Slaughter, but he's coming off a torn Achilles' and isn't real competition. They've also passed on free agents such as Kerry Rhodes, giving Gipson a vote of confidence. He graded out 42nd among 88 qualifying safeties in Pro Football Focus' rankings last season.

Tashaun Gipson ran as the starting free safety during Browns pre-draft minicamp practices.

This is a position to which Cleveland will almost certainly add competition in the draft, but it's worth noting. Pat Shurmur's old coaching staff was high on Gipson's talent, believing he could grow into an eventual starter. Free safety is currently one of the top question marks on an otherwise underrated roster.

Pat Shurmur's old Browns coaching staff believed second-year S Tashaun Gipson could develop into an NFL starter.

Regime change obviously leads to differing opinions, but Gipson showed promise in practice as a rookie. The UDFA from Wyoming measured 5-foot-11 3/8, 206 at his 2012 Pro Day and ran a 4.61 forty with a 10-foot-2 broad jump and 35 1/2-inch vertical. The Browns are currently searching for a starting free safety.
