Jaguars signed RB Jonathan Grimes, formerly of the Texans.
The Jaguars made room for him by waiving Tyler Gaffney. Grimes played sparingly in Houston last year, tallying 199 yards on 36 touches over 175 offensive snaps. With Leonard Fournette, Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon locked in as Jacksonville's top backs, a special teams role is probably the best Grimes can hope for. Aug 11 - 4:19 PM

Date:

Texans RB Jonathan Grimes rushed twice for 11 yards and caught 4-of-4 targets for 43 yards in Saturday's Divisional Round loss to New England.

Grimes took over as Houston’s third-down and long-yardage back late in the season. On Saturday, Grimes made a third-down catch for a first down late in the first quarter and ran six yards for a first down a few plays later. Grimes disappeared before fourth-quarter garbage time, where Brock Osweiler checked down to him frequently. Grimes is a pedestrian passing-down back. An impending free agent, Grimes will have to compete for a roster spot in 2017.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien called Jonathan Grimes a "situational player."

Grimes averaged a healthy 8.6 yards on five carries last week against the Packers with most of those runs converting long third downs, but it does not look like he is headed for a bigger workload. "If there's a bunch of situational plays in the game, he's going to come up big for us," O'Brien said. "He's come up big for us on third down. He does certain things on first and second down, two-minute drill. I mean the guy does a little bit of everything for us and that's a guy that is very valuable to a pro football team." Grimes is not going to get enough work to become fantasy relevant, but his healthy return seems to have knocked Akeem Hunt out of the rotation.

Texans declared RB Jonathan Grimes, QB Brandon Weeden, WR Keith Mumphery, S Quintin Demps, ILB Brian Peters, OG Oday Aboushi, and DE Joel Heath inactive for Week 7 against the Broncos.

Grimes has an ankle injury, and Demps is out with a quad issue.

Texans declared RB Jonathan Grimes, TE Stephen Anderson, QB Brandon Weeden, OG Oday Aboushi, CB Kareem Jackson, WR Keith Mumphery, and DE Brandon Dunn inactive for Week 5 against the Vikings.

Grimes is going to miss about a month with a cracked fibula. Anderson has been sidelined a couple games with a hamstring injury. The Texans will get back LT Duane Brown, who missed the first four games of the season, and WR Braxton Miller.

Texans reserve RB Jonathan Grimes will be sidelined "roughly a month" with a cracked fibula.

Grimes had been running as the Texans' No. 3 back. At this time, he doesn't appear headed to injured reserve. His absence creates an opening for rookie Tyler Ervin, whose NFL career is off to a rough start thanks to special teams miscues.

Texans re-signed RB Jonathan Grimes to a one-year contract.

Grimes is back in the fold and will compete for touches behind new starter Lamar Miller. Grimes is best on pass downs, but has also shown he can run the ball by averaging over five yards per carry last season.

The Texans will not tender a contract to restricted free agent RB Jonathan Grimes, making him a free agent.

The Texans decided Grimes wasn't worth the low tender of $1.67 million. It's possible he returns on a cheaper deal. Now 26, Grimes had a strong 2015, averaging 5.0 yards per carry while catching 26 passes. He can be a useful reserve in a committee.

The Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports the Texans want to keep restricted free agent RB Jonathan Grimes.

Houston could keep Grimes around by offering him a tender, but they likely want to re-sign him to a cheaper, multi-year deal. Grimes caught 26 passes and rushed for 282 yards on 56 carries in limited snaps last season. With Houston eying some big-name backs in free agency, Grimes should be nothing more than a passing-down complement if he returns.

Jonathan Grimes rushed four times for 15 yards and caught both of his targets for 12 yards in the Texans' Wild Card loss to the Chiefs.

Coming off a fluky two-touchdown Week 17 performance, Grimes predictably came back to Earth with just 27 scoreless yards as the Texans' pass-game back behind early-down runner Alfred Blue. In total, Grimes amassed 455 yards in the regular season on 82 touches. His lone two scores were in Week 17. Grimes is headed for restricted free agency but should be back in 2016.

Jonathan Grimes rushed four times for 26 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' Week 17 win over the Jaguars, adding four catches for 28 yards and an additional score.

The scores were the second and third of his career. Grimes enters the postseason as Alfred Blue's primary change-of-pace back.

Jonathan Grimes rushed six times for 25 yards Week 16 against the Titans.

Three of Grimes' carries came as direct snaps in the wildly unsuccessful wildcat formation Houston stubbornly insists upon using. Grimes actually managed more yards on his three traditional carries. He will continue to be a role player in the season finale.

Jonathan Grimes was held to one carry against the Colts in Week 15.

Grimes was a non-factor despite leading the Texans in rushing last week. He looks to have lost change-of-pace duties to Akeem Hunt.
Sun, Dec 20, 2015 04:40:00 PM

Jonathan Grimes rushed seven times for 53 yards and caught two passes for nine yards in the Texans' Week 14 loss to the Patriots.

Grimes got most of his yards on a 37-yard run. He played a bigger role with Alfred Blue not getting any snaps. With the Texans playing from behind all game, he led the backfield with 23 snaps. Grimes has looked like Houston's best back, but the Texans don't view him as capable of more than a low-volume workload.
Mon, Dec 14, 2015 12:00:00 AM

Jonathan Grimes rushed five times for 28 yards and caught 2-of-2 targets for 15 yards in the Texans' Week 13 loss to Buffalo.

Although Grimes has flashed signs of being Houston's most-effective all-purpose back, the Texans' coaching staff seems to envision him as merely a low-volume role player while distributing weekly carries unevenly between Alfred Blue, Chris Polk, Grimes, and Akeem Hunt. Expect Grimes to handle 6-9 touches when the Texans square off with the Patriots in Week 14.
