The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports Saints DC Rob Ryan's job is "safe," and he'll remain with the team for the 2015 season.
In his first year on the job, Ryan guided the Saints to a No. 4 overall finish in total defense in 2013, finishing second against the pass. The unit took major steps backward this past season, however, finishing 31st in yards allowed, 25th against the pass, and 29th vs. the run. Ryan and coach Sean Payton got into several heated exchanges on the sidelines, and reports leaked out that the two men "hate" each other. The Saints were an underachieving team across the board in 2014. Jan 7 - 8:59 AM

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports coach Sean Payton and DC Rob Ryan "strongly dislike each other," and "change is inevitable this offseason."

Sources told La Canfora that the two men "hate" each other. Ryan turned around the defense last season, but the relationship between Ryan and Payton has deteriorated in a 4-7 season. They've gotten into multiple heated exchanges on the sideline and behind closed doors. Ryan will likely be fired. Ex-Raiders coach Dennis Allen, who worked under Payton in New Orleans before going to Denver, could be a candidate to replace Ryan. That's pure speculation on our part.

Appearing on ESPN's NFL Insiders Monday, Chris Mortensen reported Saints DC Rob Ryan's long hair is considered an impediment to landing a head-coaching job.

Mort's report is via "several NFL executives," including an owner. Although Ryan's flowing, silver locks are unusual for an NFL coach, we highly doubt it's the reason he's never risen to the ranks of head coach. The 2013 Saints are the first team Ryan's coordinated to reach the playoffs, while he's been with four clubs since 2008. Like his brother Rex, Rob is a strong defensive mind, but we expect him to be back as Sean Payton's coordinator for 2014. He hasn't been linked to any head-coaching vacancies.

Saints hired Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator.

Ryan's name first appeared on the Saints' radar as a candidate earlier this week after he briefly flirted with the Rams. Ryan faces the tall task of turning around the league's 32nd ranked defense. The Saints will transition to a 3-4 under Ryan, and will almost certainly have to revamp their front-seven personnel. Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks are building blocks on the defensive line.
