Cardinals signed DC Todd Bowles to a contract extension through 2017.
Despite losing Daryl Washington to suspension, Darnell Dockett to an ACL tear and Karlos Dansby to free agency, Bowles has the Cardinals' defense humming. They rank fourth in points allowed and third in run defense, a big reason why the Cards are 8-1. Bowles' extension comes with a raise and the freedom to still pursue head-coaching opportunities. He'll surely have some interviews this offseason. Nov 13 - 10:38 AM

FOX Sports reports Cardinals DC Todd Bowles has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy.

Although NFL Network's Albert Breer reported Sunday that the Browns' job is viewed as "radioactive" around the league, Bowles' withdrawal is probably due to the fact that he didn't view himself as a realistic candidate to replace Rob Chudzinski. There have been rumors that Broncos OC Adam Gase's hiring is a fait accompli in Cleveland. Perhaps it's by design, but the Browns' vacancy has generated absolutely no buzz since Chudzinski was summarily dismissed after only one year on the job.

In addition to Mike Zimmer, XTRA Phoenix's Mike Jurecki is hearing Cardinals DC Todd Bowles will receive a second head-coaching interview from the Vikings.

The Vikings are expected to bring in 3-4 candidates for their second round of interviews, with Zimmer installed as the early favorite. Bowles clearly also piqued Vikings GM Rick Spielman's interest during his initial interview. The third candidate for a second interview has not yet been revealed.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Cardinals DC Todd Bowles' interview for the Vikings' head-coaching vacancy went "incredibly well" on Monday.

Rapoport somewhat expects Bowles to be among the final three candidates for the Minnesota job. Browns DC Ray Horton will interview for the gig Tuesday. Bowles, 50, would have a few pieces to build his defense around in Minnesota, including CB Xavier Rhodes, S Harrison Smith, and DT Sharrif Floyd. Rhodes fits Bowles' preference for bigger press corners and played well as a rookie.

The Vikings will interview Cardinals DC Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy on Monday.

The Vikings will then interview ex-Browns DC Ray Horton on Tuesday. Ironically, Bowles coordinated the Cardinals' 2012 defense, while Horton ran Arizona's 2011 defense before being let go by Bruce Arians. There is no clear favorite in Minnesota's coaching derby yet. They are also interviewing Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell and Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, and have flirted with Bengals DC Mike Zimmer.

Cardinals DC Todd Bowles' interview for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy will take place on Friday.

According to FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo, Bowles will then interview with the Vikings next week. The favorite for the Browns job, Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, will interview on Saturday.
Jan 2 - 2:52 PM

The Browns have been granted permission to interview Cardinals DC Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy.

Bowles satisfies the NFL's Rooney Rule and has drawn interest from multiple teams this offseason. The Browns are also expected to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, and Broncos OC Adam Gase as head-coaching candidates.

Updating a previous item, the Lions have not requested permission to interview Cardinals DC Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy.

NFL Network's Albert Breer originally reported the Lions reached out to Bowles, but Breer clarified there was a mix-up on his end. Bowles has drawn interest from the Browns and Vikings. Breer's colleague, Mike Silver, reports there's a possibility Bowles turns down the Browns' request.

NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Lions have requested permission to interview Cardinals DC Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy.

Bowles has drawn interest from the Lions, Vikings, and Browns now on this Black Monday. He's an African American and could be this year's Keith Armstrong. Armstrong, the Falcons' special teams coordinator, interviewed for a handful of head-coaching jobs last winter but wasn't thought to be a realistic candidate for any of the openings. Bowles' defense finished the season as the No. 1 run unit and 14th against the pass, so he clearly deserves a shot. Bowles, 50, has no head-coaching experience and has run both the 3-4 and 4-3 in the past.

The Vikings are in the process of setting up a head-coaching interview with Cardinals DC Todd Bowles.

The Browns are in pursuit of Bowles, too, though there is speculation he's only being used as satisfaction for the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate in head-coaching searches. The Vikings have also targeted Seahawks DC Dan Quinn to replace Leslie Frazier.

The Browns have requested permission to interview Cardinals DC Todd Bowles for their head-coaching vacancy.

Bowles is an African American, so his interview could be a token one designed to satisfy the Rooney Rule. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Browns have also asked permission to interview Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, and Broncos OC Adam Gase as head-coaching candidates.

New Cardinals DC Todd Bowles will employ a 3-4 base defense.

It's the same scheme the Cardinals used under former DC Ray Horton, and still the best fit for their current personnel. Bowles has pledged not to make "dramatic changes" to a unit that ranked 12th in yards against last season. That's probably a good idea for the first-year coordinator, who struggled to adjust on the fly as the Eagles' interim defensive boss in 2012.
