Ex-Bills coach Rex Ryan signed a deal with ESPN to appear on NFL Sunday Countdown ahead of the Super Bowl next Sunday.
According to the Sports Business Journal, all four of ESPN, CBS, FOX, and NFL Network reached out to Ryan to gauge his interest in joining their teams. Ryan definitely has a job in the media waiting for him should he not land a coaching gig. The deal with ESPN only covers the Super Bowl, but could lead to more. Jan 30 - 10:08 AM

Jenny Vrentas of the MMQB reports Rex Ryan told Bills owner Terry Pegula in a private meeting last Tuesday to "fire him now" if he was planning to fire him after the season.

GM Doug Whaley said he was "not privy to the conversation" which resulted in Rex's firing on Monday, and Vrentas' reporting confirms his comments. Ryan reportedly was upset with the decision to bench Tyrod Taylor, who Rex promised the starting job as long as he was coach, and that situation led to the meeting which ultimately led to his dismissal. While Whaley appears technically correct, the notion he played no role in Ryan's removal is ludicrous. No matter how it played out, Whaley looks like he will get another shot to hire a head coach and another swing at finding a franchise quarterback.

Speaking about fired coach Rex Ryan, Bills DT Marcell Dareus said Ryan's defense is "just too much detail for a lot of guys."

Ryan's defense didn't live up to his Jets reputation in Buffalo, and Dareus believes it was because Ryan was too focused on opponent-specific game plans, and lacked an identity. "We want to have our identity (knowing) this is who we are, and what we’re going to do," Dareus said. Ryan didn't lack for talent in Buffalo, so perhaps Dareus is right. Despite the criticisms, Ryan has earned his rep as a defensive whiz. He'll be in high demand as a coordinator if he chooses to stay in coaching.

Bills fired HC Rex Ryan.

Assistant coach Rob Ryan is also being let go. The Ryan brothers couldn't even make it to Black Monday. Rex was a near lock to be fired after the season but the Bills handed him his walking papers a week early after another poor showing against the Dolphins in Week 16. Some of the lowlights from that game included a feeble attempt to ice Dolphins kicker Andrew Franks, an inexplicable end-around to Reggie Bush during overtime and finally allowing 57 yards to Jay Ajayi on a play where the Bills had only 10 men on the field. Ryan was never able to fix the Bills' broken passing game and his run defense was one of the league's worst. He'll finish his Buffalo tenure at 15-16. OC Anthony Lynn will handle coaching duties in Buffalo's season finale against the Jets.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports "no decision" has been made on Rex Ryan’s fate.

This conflicts with earlier reports. Ryan isn't expected to keep his job, but it's possible the decision has been delayed with the Bills having an outside chance at the playoffs. Ryan is still likely coaching his final two games in Buffalo. The Bills view OC Anthony Lynn as a potential in-house replacement.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bills are expected to move on from head coach Rex Ryan this offseason.

Per Schefter, Ryan is "probably coaching his final games" in Buffalo and is already "aware of what's ahead." In other words, he's a sitting duck. The expectation all along was that Ryan would be given one last chance to guide Buffalo to the postseason after going 8-8 in his first year at the helm. Obviously he wasn't able to deliver on that. While Ryan appears to be headed for unemployment, the Bills are expected to retain GM Doug Whaley. Ryan has gone 14-15 during his two-year stay in Buffalo.

The Buffalo News reports Bills owner Terry Pegula is opposed to the idea of firing Rex Ryan in-season.

The report suggests Ryan will keep his job for the final three weeks, but his status following the season is considerably murkier. Ryan could certainly point to injuries, especially on offense, as a reason for his team arguably underperforming, but the Bills have once again been a mistake-filled and inconsistent squad this year. He will likely be shown the door on Black Monday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula had private meetings with key offensive players before deciding to fire OC Greg Roman this week.

Rex Ryan has publicly said it was his decision to move on from the offensive coordinator, but it has become clear that was not the case. Ryan was reportedly "not happy" about the meetings. Things are well on their way to unraveling in Buffalo, and it would not be surprising if Ryan was shown the door before the end of the season. Already 0-2, the Bills get the Cardinals and Patriots in the next two weeks.

The Sporting News' Alex Marvez reports the Bills' front office forced coach Rex Ryan to fire OC Greg Roman as a "sacrificial lamb" following Thursday night's embarrassing home loss to the Jets.

Per Marvez, the front office "leaned on" Rex to make a "significant change" in hopes of "appeasing a disgruntled fan base." Ryan couldn't fire himself -- and certainly wouldn't fire his brother Rob -- so he fired Roman, who took the Bills' offense from No. 26 in offensive DVOA in 2014 to No. 9 in 2015, and scored 24 points Thursday night against a tough Jets defense. Meanwhile, Rex's defense finished No. 24 in DVOA in 2015 after ranking No. 2 under Jim Schwartz in 2014, and coughed up 37 points at home to the Jets. Marvez also confirms Rex himself "is feeling the heat" following an 0-2 start. The Bills are set up to start 0-4 with the Cardinals and Patriots next on the schedule.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan believes Bills coach Rex Ryan is "squarely on the hot seat."

There were rumors both Ryan and GM Doug Whaley were given playoffs-or-fired ultimatums this offseason, so it is not surprising to see Ryan listed on the hot seat. Still, an avalanche of injuries and off-field issues have given Ryan a potential excuse for a bad season. Of course, Ryan can render all of this moot by winning games.

Legendary coach Buddy Ryan has died.

Ryan might be known to the younger generation as the father of Rex and Rob, but he was the architect of perhaps the greatest defense in NFL history. Running Ryan's patented "46" defense, the 1985 Chicago Bears allowed just 12.4 points a game in the regular season and a total of 10 points during their three-game run to a Super Bowl title. Ryan had some success as a head coach as well, leading the Eagles to three-straight playoff appearances in the late 80s. He was 85.

In an interview with MMQB's Jenny Vrentas, Bills coach Rex Ryan said he is not sure if the front office has "100 percent" bought into his plans.

"I don’t know all the business people yet; they should be 'all in,' but I don’t know," Ryan said. "There’s times when the doubt part, that can be driven through the media. But I’m going to surround myself with the very best, and I’m going to win." Ryan quickly reverted to his patented brand of bravado, but these comments suggest there are naysayers behind the scenes. Owner Terry Pegula has reportedly told both Ryan and GM Doug Whaley their jobs depend on a playoff berth this season.

Bills coach Rex Ryan said the defense will "do things much differently next year."

Ryan's attempt to merge his scheme with the existing scheme and personnel in Buffalo was a disaster. Ryan made it clear the plan for next season is to run his defense, but that will require an overhaul of the roster. DE Mario Williams is already halfway out the door, and there could be other departures as well.
Mon, Jan 11, 2016 10:02:00 AM

The Buffalo News reports Bills owner Terry Pegula told coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley they will be fired if Buffalo does not reach the playoffs next season.

Buffalo entered the season with high hopes, but the defense collapsed and the team missed the playoffs for the 16th season in a row. There were some high points, as Buffalo finally found a respectable quarterback in Tyrod Taylor and started to see how good Sammy Watkins can be, but there is still a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball. In a division featuring the Patriots and Jets, it will be tough for Buffalo to make a playoff push next year.
Tue, Jan 5, 2016 11:18:00 AM

Bills owner Terry Pegula confirmed coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley will return in 2016.

"Our management team and coaching staff work well together," Pegula said. "This stable foundation is necessary to achieve long term success in the NFL." There was never any doubt Ryan would be back after just one season in Buffalo, but Whaley's future was a little more uncertain. There's no question that changes need to be made, particularly regarding Ryan's scheme-players fit.
