ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi reports the Bills, Texans, and Redskins are "potential participants" for this summer's season of Hard Knocks on HBO.
The Browns have also been linked to the show, but they emphatically pitched their desire to not be on the show earlier in the offseason, and the NFL is expected to grant them their wish. It's also hard to see the Bills volunteering as tribute, being that coach Rex Ryan has already done it in the past with the Jets. Teams with new head coaches are also eligible to opt out of being considered. May 22 - 9:04 AM

Rex Ryan - DT - Bills

Bills hired Rex Ryan as head coach.

It's a monster get for the Bills, who got a late start on their search after Doug Marrone opted out of his deal. They're now the first team to hire a new coach this offseason. Ryan wanted the Falcons job, but was never brought back for a second interview. Ryan held his second interview with Buffalo on Saturday night and inked a five-year, $27.5 million contract Sunday morning. He's expected to retain DC Jim Schwartz and bring aboard 49ers OC Greg Roman to run the offense. Roman helped develop Colin Kaepernick from a huge project into a starting-caliber quarterback. He'll now work with E.J. Manuel.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bills will host ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan for a second interview on Saturday evening.

Ryan's first interview was reportedly on Thursday, so the sides must have hit it off quickly. Ryan would be a good get for the Bills, but he'd have the same problem he had in New York City: No quarterback. Ryan would be a much better fit for the Falcons, who need an overhaul on defense but have all the pieces in place for success on offense.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Rex Ryan is interested in bringing in Marc Trestman as his offensive coordinator if Ryan lands a head coaching position.

Rapoport says the duo would like to "pair up." It would be a match made in heaven. No one would question the defensive credentials of Ryan, but the Jets finished in the bottom five of the league in scoring offense in each of Ryan's last three seasons in New York. Trestman was very successful as the Raiders' offensive coordinator during the team's Super Bowl run in 2002 and led one of the best offenses in the league his first year in Chicago. Ryan has interviewed with the Bills and Falcons since being released by the Jets.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reports the Bills will interview Rex Ryan for their head-coaching vacancy on Thursday.

We can't even count how many interviews the Bills have conducted or plan to conduct. But Ryan is one of the more intriguing candidates. It's a loaded roster on defense where Ryan's good pal, Mike Pettine, called the plays in 2013 before becoming the Browns' head coach. The defense would have to go through little transition. The key, as always, for Ryan is hiring a bright offensive mind to run that side of the ball. The Bills need a quarterback and about three offensive linemen. Ryan wrapped up a five-hour interview with the Falcons on Tuesday.

Rex Ryan's interview for the Falcons' head-coaching vacancy will take place on Tuesday.

Rex will also interview with the 49ers next week, and the Bills are beginning to show interest. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports owner Arthur Blank was a "huge fan" of Rex when the Falcons interviewed him in 2009. Rex chose the Jets, and the Falcons settled for Mike Smith. The Atlanta job should appeal to Ryan because there are offensive weapons in place, and a defense to "coach up." Rex may see the Falcons as an opportunity to win quickly.

The New York Post's Brian Costello reports ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan will interview for the Falcons and 49ers' head-coaching vacancies next week.

There are the "two interviews" the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta was referring to earlier Tuesday. We suspected the Falcons may be one, as owner Arthur Blank has reportedly been smitten with the idea of bringing in Ryan as head coach and to run the defense with OC Dirk Koetter staying on staff to continue to guide the offense. The 49ers have now been linked to Ryan, Todd Bowles, Josh McDaniels, Dan Quinn, and Vic Fangio for their opening.

The New York Daily News reports ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan has two head-coaching interviews scheduled for next week.

Report Manish Mehta does not name the teams, but Atlanta and Oakland both make a lot of sense. Ryan also reportedly met with ESPN officials on Tuesday. Ryan will apparently go into T.V. if he cannot land a head-coaching gig. He isn't interested in being a coordinator after six years at the helm in New York.

The New York Daily News reports ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan will meet with ESPN on Tuesday.

Ryan is pursuing a TV job in the event he doesn't land another head-coaching gig, as he's reportedly not interested in being a defensive coordinator. It's believed that ESPN isn't the only network that has reached out to Ryan. If he were to get recycled as a head coach, it would likely be in Atlanta or Oakland in 2015.

Jets fired head coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik.

Ryan went 20-12 in his first two seasons with the Jets, playing in two straight AFC Championship Games (2009, 2010). In the four seasons since then, he's gone 26-38 with zero playoff appearances and an inability to develop offensive talent. Still, Ryan hits the market as one of the best candidates available, an excellent motivator even if he's best suited to be a defensive coordinator. Ryan's defenses ranked 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th and 6th in his six years at the helm. If another head coaching opportunity doesn't materialize for him this offseason, it's possible he'll take a year off and do some television work.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to "move swiftly" on Monday, firing both coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik.

Per Mort, Johnson doesn't want to keep Rex twisting in the wind. It would be an inglorious end to what's ultimately been a successful tenure for Ryan in the Big Apple, but one that's been a fait accompli since early in the season. Ryan is a good head coach, but has routinely been felled by dysfunctional offenses. That's not all his fault, of course, but no one can fault the Jets for making a change after four straight 8-8 or worse seasons. Ryan will likely be in high demand if/when he's let go, however. Ryan is reportedly dead set against being a coordinator, so we'd guess he'll head into television if a head-coaching gig doesn't materialize.

Rex Ryan - DT - Bills reports coach Rex Ryan has already cleaned out his desk in advance of the Jets' season finale against the Dolphins.

Always expected to get the axe following another disappointing season, Ryan now appears resigned to his fate. Ryan's will not be the only head that rolls on Monday, however, as special consultant Charley Casserly has reportedly begun contacting potential replacements for GM John Idzik was well.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports a "couple of sources" reiterated that Rex Ryan to the Falcons as their head coach "seems natural."

This isn't the first we've seen a Rex-to-Atlanta rumor. Ryan interviewed for the head-coaching job that Mike Smith eventually got in 2008. Now, Smith is likely out. The Falcons recently made the switch to a 3-4 defense. While the offense is in fine shape only needing a piece or two, the defense needs an overhaul. Nobody has ever doubted Ryan's coaching ability. He just needs to find the right guy to run the offense. Cole reports the Falcons would try to keep OC Dirk Koetter on staff.

Rex Ryan admits he's coaching for his job.

"If we don't get this thing on the right track, I don't think for minute I'll be here (in 2015)," Ryan said in a Tuesday radio interview. Ryan is just admitting the obvious, but admitting the obvious is something NFL coaches rarely do. The odds are probably less than 50-50 that Ryan is back with Gang Green next season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Jets have signed coach Rex Ryan to a multi-year contract extension.

It's unclear how many years Ryan had tacked onto his deal, but previous reports late last month had Ryan getting an extension through the 2015 season. Whatever the case is, Ryan won't be entering the final year of his contract and won't have to operate under the burden of being a "lame duck" coach. He also can't "bet on himself" and become a free agent after the 2014 campaign. Ryan has never been the problem. He needs to find a quarterback, some receivers, and a competent offensive coaching staff. Marty Mornhinweg will stick around as Gang Green's offensive boss for at least another season.
