NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula had private meetings with key offensive players before deciding to fire OC Greg Roman this week.
Rex Ryan has publicly said it was his decision to move on from the offensive coordinator, but it has become clear that was not the case. Ryan was reportedly "not happy" about the meetings. Things are well on their way to unraveling in Buffalo, and it would not be surprising if Ryan was shown the door before the end of the season. Already 0-2, the Bills get the Cardinals and Patriots in the next two weeks. Sep 18 - 9:49 AM

The Sporting News' Alex Marvez reports the Bills' front office forced coach Rex Ryan to fire OC Greg Roman as a "sacrificial lamb" following Thursday night's embarrassing home loss to the Jets.

Per Marvez, the front office "leaned on" Rex to make a "significant change" in hopes of "appeasing a disgruntled fan base." Ryan couldn't fire himself -- and certainly wouldn't fire his brother Rob -- so he fired Roman, who took the Bills' offense from No. 26 in offensive DVOA in 2014 to No. 9 in 2015, and scored 24 points Thursday night against a tough Jets defense. Meanwhile, Rex's defense finished No. 24 in DVOA in 2015 after ranking No. 2 under Jim Schwartz in 2014, and coughed up 37 points at home to the Jets. Marvez also confirms Rex himself "is feeling the heat" following an 0-2 start. The Bills are set up to start 0-4 with the Cardinals and Patriots next on the schedule.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan believes Bills coach Rex Ryan is "squarely on the hot seat."

There were rumors both Ryan and GM Doug Whaley were given playoffs-or-fired ultimatums this offseason, so it is not surprising to see Ryan listed on the hot seat. Still, an avalanche of injuries and off-field issues have given Ryan a potential excuse for a bad season. Of course, Ryan can render all of this moot by winning games.

Legendary coach Buddy Ryan has died.

Ryan might be known to the younger generation as the father of Rex and Rob, but he was the architect of perhaps the greatest defense in NFL history. Running Ryan's patented "46" defense, the 1985 Chicago Bears allowed just 12.4 points a game in the regular season and a total of 10 points during their three-game run to a Super Bowl title. Ryan had some success as a head coach as well, leading the Eagles to three-straight playoff appearances in the late 80s. He was 85.

In an interview with MMQB's Jenny Vrentas, Bills coach Rex Ryan said he is not sure if the front office has "100 percent" bought into his plans.

"I don’t know all the business people yet; they should be 'all in,' but I don’t know," Ryan said. "There’s times when the doubt part, that can be driven through the media. But I’m going to surround myself with the very best, and I’m going to win." Ryan quickly reverted to his patented brand of bravado, but these comments suggest there are naysayers behind the scenes. Owner Terry Pegula has reportedly told both Ryan and GM Doug Whaley their jobs depend on a playoff berth this season.

Bills coach Rex Ryan said the defense will "do things much differently next year."

Ryan's attempt to merge his scheme with the existing scheme and personnel in Buffalo was a disaster. Ryan made it clear the plan for next season is to run his defense, but that will require an overhaul of the roster. DE Mario Williams is already halfway out the door, and there could be other departures as well.

The Buffalo News reports Bills owner Terry Pegula told coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley they will be fired if Buffalo does not reach the playoffs next season.

Buffalo entered the season with high hopes, but the defense collapsed and the team missed the playoffs for the 16th season in a row. There were some high points, as Buffalo finally found a respectable quarterback in Tyrod Taylor and started to see how good Sammy Watkins can be, but there is still a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball. In a division featuring the Patriots and Jets, it will be tough for Buffalo to make a playoff push next year.

Bills owner Terry Pegula confirmed coach Rex Ryan and GM Doug Whaley will return in 2016.

"Our management team and coaching staff work well together," Pegula said. "This stable foundation is necessary to achieve long term success in the NFL." There was never any doubt Ryan would be back after just one season in Buffalo, but Whaley's future was a little more uncertain. There's no question that changes need to be made, particularly regarding Ryan's scheme-players fit.

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi reports the Bills, Texans, and Redskins are "potential participants" for this summer's season of Hard Knocks on HBO.

The Browns have also been linked to the show, but they emphatically pitched their desire to not be on the show earlier in the offseason, and the NFL is expected to grant them their wish. It's also hard to see the Bills volunteering as tribute, being that coach Rex Ryan has already done it in the past with the Jets. Teams with new head coaches are also eligible to opt out of being considered.

Bills hired Rex Ryan as head coach.

It's a monster get for the Bills, who got a late start on their search after Doug Marrone opted out of his deal. They're now the first team to hire a new coach this offseason. Ryan wanted the Falcons job, but was never brought back for a second interview. Ryan held his second interview with Buffalo on Saturday night and inked a five-year, $27.5 million contract Sunday morning. He's expected to retain DC Jim Schwartz and bring aboard 49ers OC Greg Roman to run the offense. Roman helped develop Colin Kaepernick from a huge project into a starting-caliber quarterback. He'll now work with E.J. Manuel.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bills will host ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan for a second interview on Saturday evening.

Ryan's first interview was reportedly on Thursday, so the sides must have hit it off quickly. Ryan would be a good get for the Bills, but he'd have the same problem he had in New York City: No quarterback. Ryan would be a much better fit for the Falcons, who need an overhaul on defense but have all the pieces in place for success on offense.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Rex Ryan is interested in bringing in Marc Trestman as his offensive coordinator if Ryan lands a head coaching position.

Rapoport says the duo would like to "pair up." It would be a match made in heaven. No one would question the defensive credentials of Ryan, but the Jets finished in the bottom five of the league in scoring offense in each of Ryan's last three seasons in New York. Trestman was very successful as the Raiders' offensive coordinator during the team's Super Bowl run in 2002 and led one of the best offenses in the league his first year in Chicago. Ryan has interviewed with the Bills and Falcons since being released by the Jets.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reports the Bills will interview Rex Ryan for their head-coaching vacancy on Thursday.

We can't even count how many interviews the Bills have conducted or plan to conduct. But Ryan is one of the more intriguing candidates. It's a loaded roster on defense where Ryan's good pal, Mike Pettine, called the plays in 2013 before becoming the Browns' head coach. The defense would have to go through little transition. The key, as always, for Ryan is hiring a bright offensive mind to run that side of the ball. The Bills need a quarterback and about three offensive linemen. Ryan wrapped up a five-hour interview with the Falcons on Tuesday.

Rex Ryan's interview for the Falcons' head-coaching vacancy will take place on Tuesday.

Rex will also interview with the 49ers next week, and the Bills are beginning to show interest. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports owner Arthur Blank was a "huge fan" of Rex when the Falcons interviewed him in 2009. Rex chose the Jets, and the Falcons settled for Mike Smith. The Atlanta job should appeal to Ryan because there are offensive weapons in place, and a defense to "coach up." Rex may see the Falcons as an opportunity to win quickly.

The New York Post's Brian Costello reports ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan will interview for the Falcons and 49ers' head-coaching vacancies next week.

There are the "two interviews" the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta was referring to earlier Tuesday. We suspected the Falcons may be one, as owner Arthur Blank has reportedly been smitten with the idea of bringing in Ryan as head coach and to run the defense with OC Dirk Koetter staying on staff to continue to guide the offense. The 49ers have now been linked to Ryan, Todd Bowles, Josh McDaniels, Dan Quinn, and Vic Fangio for their opening.
