NJ.com reports coach Rex Ryan has already cleaned out his desk in advance of the Jets' season finale against the Dolphins.
Always expected to get the axe following another disappointing season, Ryan now appears resigned to his fate. Ryan's will not be the only head that rolls on Monday, however, as special consultant Charley Casserly has reportedly begun contacting potential replacements for GM John Idzik was well. Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports a "couple of sources" reiterated that Rex Ryan to the Falcons as their head coach "seems natural."

This isn't the first we've seen a Rex-to-Atlanta rumor. Ryan interviewed for the head-coaching job that Mike Smith eventually got in 2008. Now, Smith is likely out. The Falcons recently made the switch to a 3-4 defense. While the offense is in fine shape only needing a piece or two, the defense needs an overhaul. Nobody has ever doubted Ryan's coaching ability. He just needs to find the right guy to run the offense. Cole reports the Falcons would try to keep OC Dirk Koetter on staff.

Rex Ryan admits he's coaching for his job.

"If we don't get this thing on the right track, I don't think for minute I'll be here (in 2015)," Ryan said in a Tuesday radio interview. Ryan is just admitting the obvious, but admitting the obvious is something NFL coaches rarely do. The odds are probably less than 50-50 that Ryan is back with Gang Green next season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Jets have signed coach Rex Ryan to a multi-year contract extension.

It's unclear how many years Ryan had tacked onto his deal, but previous reports late last month had Ryan getting an extension through the 2015 season. Whatever the case is, Ryan won't be entering the final year of his contract and won't have to operate under the burden of being a "lame duck" coach. He also can't "bet on himself" and become a free agent after the 2014 campaign. Ryan has never been the problem. He needs to find a quarterback, some receivers, and a competent offensive coaching staff. Marty Mornhinweg will stick around as Gang Green's offensive boss for at least another season.

NFL Network's Kim Jones reports the Jets will give Rex Ryan a one-year extension through 2015.

Thus, Ryan will enter 2014 signed "only" through 2015 as a potential lame-duck coach for the second straight season. Jets GM John Idzik agreed with owner Woody Johnson that Ryan deserved to be retained following New York's 8-8 campaign, but isn't committing to him long term. Per Jones, Ryan will use the short, new deal as "motivation," believing his team will get back over the hump in 2014. The Jets will need a lot of things to break right in order for that to happen, beginning with dramatically improved quarterback and secondary play.

Jets owner Woody Johnson announced after Sunday's Week 17 win over the Dolphins that coach Rex Ryan will return in 2014.

All things considered, Ryan did a heck of a job leading an offensively-challenged -- to put it nice -- Jets team to an 8-8 record. After getting off to a nice 5-4 start behind strong defensive play and a couple of nice outings by rookie QB Geno Smith, the Jets fell off and lost three straight out of the bye week. Gang Green got back on track and won three of their final four. Ryan boasts a 46-40 career record, including the playoffs, through five seasons. The Jets need to get some playmakers on offense and shore up the back end of their defense, but there are pieces to build around. The young defensive line is going to wreak havoc for many years to come. The Jets entered Week 17 with the league's No. 3 run defense. Ryan is a terrific ball coach and motivator and wouldn't have struggled to find work had he been let go by New York.

NFL.com's Albert Breer seconds ESPN's report that the Jets appear ready to bring coach Rex Ryan back for 2014.

According to Breer, the Jets aren't "sniffing around candidates," and "haven't solicited their search firm." Despite an up-and-down 2013 with rookie QB Geno Smith at the helm, all signs point toward Ryan returning for a sixth season in the Big Apple.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the "signs are pointing" to Jets coach Rex Ryan returning for a sixth season.

The New York Daily News adds that Ryan and GM John Idzik met this week, and an announcement could come as early as Sunday. Per Schefter, the "atmosphere surrounding Ryan's status has turned from negative to positive." It's still unclear whether the Jets will offer Ryan an extension or he'll enter next season on the last year of his contract. The Jets have missed the playoffs in each of the past three seasons under Ryan, but he's managed to exceed expectations with seven wins through 15 games this year. Ryan has a 41-38 career record with the Jets over five seasons.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Sunday morning that Jets coach Rex Ryan told his players this week that he expects to be fired after the season.

If so, Ryan is going to be a hot commodity on the defensive coordinator market in a few weeks. Ryan entered this season in limbo, as Jets owner Woody Johnson fired GM Mike Tannenbaum and replaced him with ex-Seattle exec John Idzik, who now has an opportunity hand pick his head coach. Rumors have linked Idzik's interest beginning at Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell. Ryan reportedly told his players this week that "word on the street" is he's out after the season, and he asked the players to "fight for him" over the final two regular season games.

According to SI's Peter King, coach Rex Ryan was "hoping against hope" the Jets would keep CB Darrelle Revis before he was dealt on Sunday.

Ryan wasn't new GM John Idzik's hire, and knows he's facing long odds of keeping his job without his all-world cornerback locking down the secondary. Ryan can still scheme with the best of them, but is going to have to live up to his reputation this season to have any real shot at preventing a disastrous campaign and saving his job.

Rex Ryan will call the defensive plays for the Jets this season.

With Mike Pettine in Buffalo and new DC Dennis Thurman never having called plays before, this is expected. Ryan, always a tremendous defensive mind that is a fish out of water offensively, feels the need to be more hands-on as he coaches for his job. The Jets ranked eighth in total defense last season and fifth in 2011.
