The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett reports the Lions do not plan on signing DE Ziggy Ansah to a long-term extension this offseason.
Ansah is entering the final year of his rookie deal, but the Lions are fully expected to pick up his fifth-year option for 2017. Although Detroit can have Ansah under cheap control for the next two seasons, working out a long-term deal might be in their best interest. Ansah is an ascending edge player, and the market for pass rushers continues to skyrocket. Ansah has 30 sacks in three seasons including 14.5 last year. Mar 21 - 10:58 AM

RE Ziggy Ansah left the Lions' Week 15 game against the Saints with an illness and is questionable to return.

He came out in the second quarter. This would be a big loss for the Lions as Ansah is tied for second in the league with 13.5 sacks. He recorded one tackle before exiting.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah (groin) is active for Monday night's Week 4 game against the Seahawks.

He was listed as questionable after leaving last week's game early. Ansah hasn't made a ton of noise as a pass rusher with just six pressures through three weeks, but is playing top-notch run defense on the edge. Inactive for the Lions are Joique Bell (ankle), RG Larry Warford, WLB DeAndre Levy (hip), Brandon Pettigrew (hamstring), OT Corey Robinson, DT Jermelle Cudjo, and DE Phillip Hunt.

Lions DE Ziggy Ansah exited the team's Week 3 loss to the Broncos with a groin injury.

Ansah suffered the injury in the second half and did not return. Ansah was on the injury report last week with a back injury. His status for Week 4 will be updated later in the week.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah is targeting double-digit sacks.

Ansah had 7.5 sacks and a league-high 20 QB hits last season. He’s primed to take a step forward this year, but will see more double teams with the losses of Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Ansah is a strong bet to top the 64 percent of snaps he played in 2014.

The Lions are expecting a breakout season from third-year RE Ziggy Ansah.

Ansah is in his first full NFL offseason after sitting out last year's minicamp with a shoulder injury. He has 15.5 sacks through two seasons and the upside to be one of the league's top pass rushers. Ansah led the NFL with 20 quarterback hits in 2014. He turns 26 years old in late May.

Lions activated RE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) from the active/PUP list.

Ansah went under the knife in January or February, and missed the Lions' entire offseason program. He'll surely be eased back into action, but now has a shot at suiting up for the Lions' regular season dress rehearsal on August 22. It's important news for the Lions' top heavy defensive line. Ansah led all rookies with eight sacks last season.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) has been "ramping up" his activities and is "getting close" to a return.

Ansah has missed all of training camp and will likely miss the preseason opener, but it sounds like he has a chance to return to the field before Week 1. The Lions insist Ansah isn't behind, as he's getting plenty of "mental reps."

Lions DL coach Jim Washburn believes RE Ziggy Ansah "can be an elite player at some point in time."

"He’s got real potential," Washburn continued. "He’s got elite potential, he’s just got to do it." Ansah has been sidelined throughout the offseason and during training camp as he recovers from shoulder surgery. He may miss most of camp, but should be ready for the opener. Under new DC Teryl Austin, Ansah is expected to move around more. But he's going to get after the quarterback.

Lions second-year RE Ziggy Ansah will be moved around more in new DC Teryl Austin's defense.

"I like the changes we have now," Ansah said. "I don’t always have to be on the right side. I can get up and move around and drop into coverage." Ansah led all rookies with eight sacks last season despite playing limited snaps. He should see his role on defense increase this season, and is a good bet to break the double-digit sack barrier.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) hasn't participated in any offseason practices, as expected.

Ansah underwent offseason surgery to his shoulder, a preexisting injury the Lions knew about when they took him fifth overall in 2013. He's expected to be ready for Week 1 and continue to trend up as a building block. Ansah led all rookies with eight sacks last year and was effective against the run.

Coach Jim Caldwell confirmed RE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) won't be ready when the Lions open OTAs in two weeks.

Ansah is taking it slow as he recovers from surgery, but should be fine for Week 1. Despite battling ankle, shoulder and bicep issues last season, he led all rookies with eight sacks while standing tall against the run. Ansah is just scratching the surface of his potential.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah is recovering from shoulder surgery, but is expected to be ready for Week 1.

Ansah's timeline is vague, as FOX Sports' Alex Marvez reports he "should" be ready for the regular season. That would suggest a serious operation, but it's quite possible Ansah will be back to 100 percent well before Week 1. For now, he should be considered doubtful for OTAs. Raw coming out of BYU last season, Ansah ended up leading all rookies with eight sacks. Although his development is ahead of schedule, Ansah would still benefit from a full offseason.

Coach Jim Caldwell confirmed the Lions will continue to work in Wide-9 defensive concepts.

Ex-coach Jim Schwartz and DL coach Jim Washburn popularized the Wide-9 while with the Titans. Washburn was brought over to Detroit, and Caldwell has retained him and Kris Kocurek as DL coaches. The Wide-9 requires defensive ends to line up outside the tight ends and changes the angles opposing offensive tackles have to block at. RE Ziggy Ansah led all rookies with eight sacks in 2013.

Lions RE Ziggy Ansah led all rookies with eight sacks in 2013.

Ansah was widely viewed as "raw" coming out of BYU with only three years of football-playing experience, but he displayed a strong all-around game as a rookie, defending the run even better than he rushed the passer. Ansah finished with seven additional tackles for loss and a pair of forced fumbles. The 24-year-old is an obvious building block for Detroit's future.
