The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jim Thomas suggests OC Brian Schottenheimer's claim that Zac Stacy isn't locked in as the Rams' starter was "probably more coachspeak than anything else."
ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner has expressed similar thoughts. Like most good teams throughout the NFL, the Rams are trying to create a sense of competition at every spot, even positions where players appear entrenched. Tre Mason's lack of experience in pass protection makes it especially hard to take Schottenheimer seriously. We have not adjusted Stacy's status as a borderline RB1 since the comments. ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner considers OC Brian Schottenheimer's announcement of St. Louis' top running back spot as a competition to be "part of an effort to promote competition at all positions."

Wagoner calls Schotty's statement a "common refrain" and "solid ploy to ensure everybody brings their best to the practice field on a daily basis." Added Schottenheimer, "We’re just trying to create competition. Sam Bradford is going to compete. That’s what we’re trying to do and whoever wins the job, wins the job." Schottenheimer did add, "I expect to see multiple guys carry the football." Zac Stacy may not push for the NFL lead in rushing attempts, but he remains the favorite for feature back work in St. Louis.

Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer stated Wednesday that Zac Stacy is "not guaranteed" St. Louis' starting running back job.

Schotty said rookie Tre Mason "and others" are in the hunt. In late March, coach Jeff Fisher said he envisioned Stacy as "probably a 70-percent of the carries" back "over time," perhaps with "others" like Mason and Benny Cunningham mixing in. Fisher made that comment before drafting Mason with a top-75 pick, though. We still expect Stacy to handle the vast majority of carries for the run-heavy 2014 Rams. Mason could be a useful year-one change-of-pace back.

Coach Jeff Fisher said "over time" Zac Stacy will "probably be that 70-percent of the carries guy."

Stacy is going to be Fisher's Chris Johnson. Johnson handled 925 of the 1,413 rushing attempts under Fisher from 2008-2010, which equates to a 65.5 percent clip. Take away Vince Young's carries and that number rises to over 70 percent. Fisher doesn't have a mobile quarterback in St. Louis. This is welcome news for fantasy owners. Stacy is going to be the focal point of the offense and should play all three downs, even though he's not a great pass catcher. As long as the Rams hang around in games and Stacy stays healthy, he should have no problem eclipsing 300 carries in 2014. Stacy is on the RB1/2 fence.

The Rams have no plans to scale back Zac Stacy's workload for 2014.

"He should be more productive (in 2014) because he should have more carries," were the words of GM Les Snead on Friday. Stacy averaged a whopping 24 touches in 11 games as the Rams' starter, but is still only 23 (in April). With Stacy breaking out as a rookie and the Rams lacking proven runners behind him, they have no reason to lighten his load. Stacy will be a solid second-round pick in re-draft leagues, and is shaping up as an excellent long-term Dynasty own.

Zac Stacy was limited to 15 yards on 15 carries and four catches for 23 yards in the Rams' Week 17 loss to Seattle.

Despite the slow finale, Stacy was a revelation for St. Louis' previously beleaguered run game as a fifth-round rookie, overtaking Daryl Richardson as the Rams' starter in Week 5 and turning in a ROY-caliber first NFL season. (Eddie Lacy or Keenan Allen will win it, but Stacy isn't far behind.) The Vanderbilt alum finishes the year with 250 carries for 973 yards, seven touchdowns, and 26 receptions. He is entrenched as the Rams' long-term franchise back. Stacy will be worth considering as early as the second round of 2014 fantasy drafts. He's in the hunt as a top-ten Dynasty back.

Zac Stacy rushed 33 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in St. Louis' Week 16 win over the Bucs, adding one catch for five yards.

Stacy also lost a fumble, letting the ball get punched out from behind. Playing through some sort of leg tweak, Stacy earned his yards the hard way, getting little more than what was blocked and absorbing all sorts of punishment. He's unlikely to get in many practice reps for Week 17, and won't be a compelling daily-league option as the Rams make the trip to Seattle.

Speaking Wednesday, Zac Stacy says he feels "as good as new."

Stacy gave owners a brief scare during Week 15 when he missed a series with a hip issue. "I feel better than last week, to tell you the truth," he said Wednesday. Stacy is practicing in full this week and will be a fine RB1 against the Bucs come Sunday. He's averaging a robust 22.2 touches per game over the last 10 weeks.

Zac Stacy (hip) is not even on the Week 16 injury report.

Stacy practiced with the rest of his teammates, getting in a full session. He injured his hip early on in the first quarter last week against the Saints but is ready to roll for Week 16 versus Tampa Bay. The Bucs trot out a strong run defense, but Stacy is the focal point of the St. Louis offense and is going to see 20-plus touches every week. Pen Stacy in as a mid-to-high RB1 this week.

Zac Stacy (hip) is not expected to practice Wednesday.

It's just going to be a rest day to help Stacy get some soreness out. He missed one series in Week 15 after taking a shot to the hip, and then returned to finish with a 28/133/1 line on 28 carries. Stacy can be penned into fantasy lineups as a RB1 in fantasy's Super Bowl week as he takes on the Bucs.

Zac Stacy brushed off the hip injury he sustained on the opening drive of Sunday's win over the Saints.

Stacy missed just one drive and then returned to put a 28/133/1 line on the Saints. "I just took a shot ... (the doctors and trainers) fixed it up for me and I went back out there," he said. Stacy may rest a little during practice this week, but he'll be fine for a home game against the Bucs in fantasy's Super Bowl week. The rookie is averaging 85.0 rushing yards and 2.1 catches per game over the last 10 weeks.

Zac Stacy rushed for 133 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries in the Rams' Week 15, 27-16 win over the Saints.

After going down with a hip injury at the end of the Rams' opening possession and giving fantasy owners a scare, Stacy returned for the third series and immediately ripped off a 29-yard run and hurdled a defender. He then ripped off a 40-yard touchdown. Both came behind the right side of his offensive line, composed of RG Rodger Saffold and RT Joe Barksdale. That duo has played extremely well. Stacy had 100 yards before halftime. He'll on the RB1 radar next week against the Bucs simply due to volume. Stacy's hip is fine.

Zac Stacy (hip) returned to Sunday's Week 15 game against the Saints after missing one possession.

Stacy ended up missing just one play -- a 31-yard touchdown by FB/TE Cory Harkey -- after going down on the Rams' opening drive. He was back for the third series and immediately picked up 29 yards on one run and hurdled a defender in the process. It's safe to say the hip is fine.

Zac Stacy exited Sunday's Week 15 game against the Saints with a hip injury and is questionable to return.

Stacy was hurt at the end of the Rams' opening possession. It came on a non-contact play. He was on the turf for a few minutes on his hands and knees in obvious pain. The training staff helped him to the sideline before a cart took Stacy to the locker room. Stacy was reportedly in good spirits and enthusiastic about returning. We'll see. The Rams ran Stacy on their first four plays.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy rushed for 25 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries against the Cardinals in Week 14.

Stacy caught three passes for minus-three yards on four targets out of the backfield. The Arizona defense is one of the top run-stopping units in the league. Couple that with an ineffective Kellen Clemens at quarterback for the Rams, and all Arizona had to concentrate on was Stacy. He was running into walls all day long. Stacy will be back on the RB2 radar next week against the Saints.
