Zac Stacy rushed for 71 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries in the Rams' Week 2 win over the Bucs.
Stacy got the start, as expected, and out-touched Benny Cunningham 19-7. He pounded a two-yard touchdown in on the Rams' opening drive, but was mostly quiet the remainder of the game, simply picking up three- and four-yard gains. Stacy also lost a fumble in the second half, but the Rams didn't turn away from him. He's pretty clearly locked in as the workhorse. Stacy gets the Cowboys in Week 3. Sep 14 - 8:27 PM

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy rushed for 43 yards on 11 carries in the Rams' Week 1 blowout loss to the Vikings.

He added one catch for eight yards, while dropping his other target. The good news is Stacy got the start and handled the bulk of the early-down work in the first half; Benny Cunningham played third downs and got one series to himself before handling most of the load late in the fourth quarter when the Rams were getting shellacked 34-3 on the scoreboard. In total, Stacy out-touched Cunningham 12-9. The Rams have a dumpster fire at the quarterback spot, which may lead to many blowouts and not much run-game work for Stacy. He's more RB2 than RB1. The Rams travel to Tampa Bay in Week 2.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham are sharing first-team reps during the Rams' Sunday warmups, but Stacy is working in first.

Stacy will get the first crack to establish a "hot hand" against the Vikings, with Cunningham presumably rotating in. The Rams' coaching staff will then ride whichever back runs the ball most productively early on. It's a tricky situation for fantasy owners, but we still like Stacy as a top-15 fantasy running back bet. Cunningham is an RB4 until he shows that he's more.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Rams RBs coach Ben Sirmans said that he "wouldn’t be surprised" if Zac Stacy took the first snaps in Sunday's opener against the Vikings.

Sirmans added that the final depth chart is "still to be determined." The fact Stacy has yet to be named the starter, however, confirms Benny Cunningham is going to have a role in the offense. The Rams are expected to go with a "hot hand" approach at running back, and could use a committee of Stacy and Cunningham. Stacy is borderline RB1 for Week 1, but there remains concern surrounding his workload.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Rams GM Les Snead said this week that he expects the offense to go with the "hot hand" in a given week at running back.

Exactly what Zac Stacy owners feared. While Stacy is listed as the Rams' starting running back, Benny Cunningham started the third preseason game and has by all accounts looked like the better back this summer. Cunningham is going to have a role on offense on Sundays. Predicting how big of one is the problem. Stacy is currently our No. 11 running back for Week 1, while Cunningham is 62nd. The gap may turn out to be closer than that. Stacy is still start-able in a run-heavy Rams offense, but he may not be the RB1 we expect.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner has Zac Stacy penned in atop St. Louis' tailback depth chart.

Wagoner lists Stacy first, Benny Cunningham second, Tre Mason third, and special teamer Chase Reynolds fourth. The Rams' online depth chart also lists Stacy first. St. Louis made two lineup changes to start its third preseason game -- giving Cunningham and reserve RG Davin Joseph run with the ones -- but coach Jeff Fisher cautioned afterwards that there was "not much to them." We still expect Stacy to be the centerpiece of the Rams' 2014 offense.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Speaking about Zac Stacy coming off the bench in Saturday's preseason game, Rams coach Jeff Fisher described the move as a way to see what Benny Cunningham could do with the first-team offense.

"We just gave (Cunningham) a chance to run behind the first offensive line," Fisher said. "We know what Zac can do." It's as plausible a reason as any, and further confirmation that there's no reason for Stacy owners to panic. Cunningham has out-run Stacy this preseason, but the sample size simply isn't big enough to create worry. Although Stacy is not an elite talent, he proved his bonafides in 2013. He remains on the RB1/2 borderline.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy came off the bench behind Benny Cunningham in Saturday's preseason game, rushing five times for 11 yards.

He wasn't targeted in the passing game. Stacy entered on the Rams' second series, but Cunningham's start is certainly an eye-opener. Cunningham has out-run Stacy on the preseason field (15-80-5.3 to Stacy's 15-39-2.6), and is an able pass protector. Cunningham out-touched Stacy 6-5 this evening. There's still no real reason to believe Stacy won't be the Rams' Week 1 bell-cow, but perhaps his leash isn't as long as previously thought. Cunningham is firmly ahead of rookie Tre Mason on the depth chart.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy rushed for 22 yards on four carries in Friday night's preseason opener versus the Saints.

Stacy got the start, as expected, and ran with the ones, though QB Sam Bradford, LT Jake Long, and C Scott Wells didn't play in the exhibition tilt. Benny Cunningham was second onto the field at running back, followed by rookie Tre Mason. Stacy is locked in as St. Louis' feature back and a fantasy RB1/2.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Zac Stacy is getting most of the first-team reps at training camp, as expected.

There was offseason coachspeak in St. Louis suggesting Stacy would have to fight for his starting gig at camp. We never bought it. Rookie Tre Mason has almost no experience in pass protection, and Benny Cunningham only earned 47 carries in 14 games last year. Stacy has borderline RB1 appeal thanks to projected volume as the centerpiece of a Rams team built to pound the football.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jim Thomas suggests OC Brian Schottenheimer's claim that Zac Stacy isn't locked in as the Rams' starter was "probably more coachspeak than anything else."

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner has expressed similar thoughts. Like most good teams throughout the NFL, the Rams are trying to create a sense of competition at every spot, even positions where players appear entrenched. Tre Mason's lack of experience in pass protection makes it especially hard to take Schottenheimer seriously. We have not adjusted Stacy's status as a borderline RB1 since the comments.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner considers OC Brian Schottenheimer's announcement of St. Louis' top running back spot as a competition to be "part of an effort to promote competition at all positions."

Wagoner calls Schotty's statement a "common refrain" and "solid ploy to ensure everybody brings their best to the practice field on a daily basis." Added Schottenheimer, "We’re just trying to create competition. Sam Bradford is going to compete. That’s what we’re trying to do and whoever wins the job, wins the job." Schottenheimer did add, "I expect to see multiple guys carry the football." Zac Stacy may not push for the NFL lead in rushing attempts, but he remains the favorite for feature back work in St. Louis.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer stated Wednesday that Zac Stacy is "not guaranteed" St. Louis' starting running back job.

Schotty said rookie Tre Mason "and others" are in the hunt. In late March, coach Jeff Fisher said he envisioned Stacy as "probably a 70-percent of the carries" back "over time," perhaps with "others" like Mason and Benny Cunningham mixing in. Fisher made that comment before drafting Mason with a top-75 pick, though. We still expect Stacy to handle the vast majority of carries for the run-heavy 2014 Rams. Mason could be a useful year-one change-of-pace back.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

Coach Jeff Fisher said "over time" Zac Stacy will "probably be that 70-percent of the carries guy."

Stacy is going to be Fisher's Chris Johnson. Johnson handled 925 of the 1,413 rushing attempts under Fisher from 2008-2010, which equates to a 65.5 percent clip. Take away Vince Young's carries and that number rises to over 70 percent. Fisher doesn't have a mobile quarterback in St. Louis. This is welcome news for fantasy owners. Stacy is going to be the focal point of the offense and should play all three downs, even though he's not a great pass catcher. As long as the Rams hang around in games and Stacy stays healthy, he should have no problem eclipsing 300 carries in 2014. Stacy is on the RB1/2 fence.

Zac Stacy - RB - Rams

The Rams have no plans to scale back Zac Stacy's workload for 2014.

"He should be more productive (in 2014) because he should have more carries," were the words of GM Les Snead on Friday. Stacy averaged a whopping 24 touches in 11 games as the Rams' starter, but is still only 23 (in April). With Stacy breaking out as a rookie and the Rams lacking proven runners behind him, they have no reason to lighten his load. Stacy will be a solid second-round pick in re-draft leagues, and is shaping up as an excellent long-term Dynasty own.
