Blaine Gabbert and TEs coach Jeff Nixon both talked up Vance McDonald following Tuesday's minicamp practice.
"He’s a guy that we have to utilize," Gabbert said. "He’s a mismatch nightmare on linebackers." Nixon spoke even more glowingly of the fourth-year tight end: "The sky is the limit. He’s very talented. He has the size and the speed. I’m expecting a big year out of Vance. We’re looking for him to take off right from where he left off last year, being a big-play tight-end target for us in the pass game." McDonald started the final eight games of 2015, catching 24-of-37 targets for 294 yards and all three of his scores. With Vernon Davis now gone, McDonald figures to be locked in as the starter and was a favorite of Gabbert's the final month-plus. Jun 7 - 9:39 PM

Vance McDonald caught 3-of-5 targets for 37 yards in the 49ers' Week 17 win over the Rams.

The October trade of Vernon Davis combined with Garrett Celek's year-ending injury thrust McDonald into San Francisco's starting tight end role down the stretch. Although his hands are among the least reliable in football, McDonald at times flashed playmaking ability and red-zone chops in his opportunities with Blaine Gabbert. Barring a big-time offseason addition, McDonald figures to enter 2016 training camp in a battle with Blake Bell for San Francisco's starting tight end job. McDonald is worth an offseason hold in Dynasty leagues as a TE3.
Jan 3 - 8:47 PM

Vance McDonald secured 5-of-7 targets for 61 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' Week 16 loss to the Lions.

The 49ers opened the game with an 11-play drive McDonald capped with a one-yard touchdown. In the second quarter, McDonald got separation from Lions LB Kyle Van Noy for a 26-yard gain. Although McDonald has unreliable hands, he has been a solid producer for the most part with Blaine Gabbert under center. McDonald will be a dart-throw DFS streamer when the 49ers host the Rams in their Week 17 season finale.

Vance McDonald secured 1-of-4 targets for ten yards in the 49ers' Week 15 loss to the Bengals.

McDonald dropped two passes and was out-targeted by rookie TE Blake Bell (8). McDonald flirted with fantasy value a few weeks back, but it is now appearing short lived and over. He'll be a weak streamer option when the 49ers take on the Lions in Week 16.

49ers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) has been "fully cleared" for Week 15.

McDonald will return against the Bengals. He'll be added to Rotoworld's rankings on Friday as a low-end TE2.

49ers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) is expected to return Sunday.

McDonald still needs to be cleared for contact, but should return after only missing one game. He'll be a low-end streamer option against Cincinnati.

49ers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 14.

The Niners will start "Belldozer" Blake Bell at tight end in Cleveland.

49ers TE Vance McDonald (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.

He is unlikely to play. With Garrett Celek (ankle) on injured reserve, rookie Blake Bell should start this week against the Browns.

49ers TE Vance McDonald is in the league's concussion protocol.

McDonald is week to week, though he'll have a chance to get cleared for Sunday's game against the Browns. His status will be updated when the 49ers return to practice on Wednesday.

Vance McDonald exited Week 13 against the Bears with a head injury.

He fell hard at the end of a 12-yard catch in the second quarter. McDonald headed to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Blake Bell is the only other healthy tight end on the roster.

Vance McDonald caught 6-of-7 targets for 71 yards and a touchdown Week 12 against the Cardinals.

McDonald dominated the tight end targets with Garrett Celek sidelined by an ankle injury and scored for the second time in two games. McDonald came open on a crossing route from eight-yards out for the 49ers' only touchdown of the game, and he had a few nice catch-and-runs on the day. Rookie Blake Bell made some plays, but McDonald stands to see a decent workload with Celek set to miss a couple weeks. He will be a streaming option next week against the Bears.
Sun, Nov 29, 2015 08:18:00 PM

Vance McDonald caught 4-of-4 targets for 65 yards and one touchdown in the 49ers' Week 11 loss to the Seahawks.

In the first game without Vernon Davis, it was Garrett Celek who stepped up at tight end. This week, it was McDonald, who caught the 49ers' lone touchdown from Blaine Gabbert. He entered Sunday with nine catches for 64 scoreless yards. It's a toss-up who will be the one to go off Week 12 vs. Arizona.

49ers TE Vance McDonald will enter training camp on the roster bubble.

The 55th overall pick in the 2013 draft, McDonald has been a bust through two NFL seasons, managing ten receptions across his first 23 NFL games. McDonald has been an effective blocker, but the 49ers drafted two tight ends in Blake Bell and Rory Anderson. They also have Vernon Davis and Derek Carrier.
Mon, May 4, 2015 04:23:00 PM

49ers placed TE Vance McDonald on injured reserve with a back injury, ending his season.

According to reporter Can Inman, McDonald's injury is "not a long-term issue." McDonald had been sidelined each of the past three weeks. He closes the book on 2014 with just two catches in eight games. He played 218 snaps, and was effective as a run blocker. The No. 55 overall pick of the 2013 draft, McDonald has only 10 grabs across 23 career games. He has vanishingly-little upside in dynasty leagues.
Tue, Dec 9, 2014 02:51:00 PM

Starting in the absence of Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald was held without a catch on two targets in San Francisco's Week 5 win over the Chiefs.

No. 3 tight end Derek Carrier caught two passes for 16 yards. The 49ers don't feature the tight-end position in the absence of Davis, instead increasing the looks going Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd's way. Davis should be considered questionable for next Monday's game against the Rams.
