ESPN's Jeremy Fowler believes TE Vance McDonald "will be a big part of the Steelers offense."
Since Jaylen Samuels was announced as a running back, the Steelers did nothing to address their tight end position in the draft, suggesting they are comfortable with McDonald in a starting role. Fowler reports that is the case, writing the organization and Ben Roethlisberger "like his potential with a full year in the system." McDonald struggled to stay healthy last year, but he produced when on the field including 10 catches for 112 yards in the Divisional Round. He has some sleeper appeal. Apr 30 - 9:40 AM

Vance McDonald caught 10-of-16 targets for 112 yards in the Steelers' Divisional Round loss to the Jaguars.

The Steelers devoted a big part of their Divisional Round playbook to forcing shovel passes and tight end screens in McDonald's direction. He led the team in targets, while Jesse James (one target) stuck to blocking. A very good athlete with inconsistent hands, McDonald battled repeated knee injuries in 2017 after the Steelers acquired him from the 49ers for peanuts late in August. Pittsburgh has 27-year-old McDonald under contract through the 2021 season.

Vance McDonald caught 4-of-5 targets for 52 yards in Monday's Week 16 win over the Texans.

After missing Week 15, McDonald was the primary pass catcher among the Pittsburgh tight ends as Jesse James managed just one target all afternoon. McDonald will be a deep-league option next week against the Browns, who have allowed 10 touchdowns to opposing tight ends on the season, the second most in the league.

Steelers declare TE Vance McDonald (ankle) out for Week 13 against the Bengals

Jesse James will be a TE2 streamer with Mcdonald out.

Steelers declared TE Vance McDonald, QB Joshua Dobbs, CB Joe Haden, S Mike Mitchell, OT Jerald Hawkins, OT Matt Feiler and OLB James Harrison inactive for Week 11 against the Titans.

McDonald had originally been expected to suit up. With his absence, Jesse James is an acceptable low-end TE2 streamer.

Vance McDonald (ankle) is questionable for Week 11 against the Titans.

Mike Mitchell (ankle) and James Harrison (back) are also questionable while Joe Haden has been ruled out with a fractured fibula. McDonald caught his first touchdown of the year in Sunday's win over Indianapolis but has been absent from practice the last two days. If he sits, it would open up more snaps for Jesse James.

Steelers TE Vance McDonald (knee) has been ruled out for Week 8.

McDonald logged season highs in playing time and routes run in last week's win over Cincinnati and has been becoming a bigger part of Pittsburgh's offense. McDonald's absence will force Jesse James back into an every-down role.

Vance McDonald (back) is questionable for Week 2 against the Vikings.

McDonald was held out of practice on both Thursday and Friday and looks to be on the wrong side of questionable. Jesse James should again be the Steelers' primary tight end in Week 2.

Steelers TE Vance McDonald was added to the injury report on Thursday, missing practice with a back issue.

McDonald's back must have seized up on him before practice. He should be considered highly questionable for Sunday's home opener against the Vikings. McDonald was held without a catch on just 19 snaps in Week 1.

Vance McDonald tallied no receptions on one target in Sunday’s win over the Browns.

McDonald dropped his lone target and played just 19 snaps compared to 53 for Jesse James on Sunday. He is still far behind in getting acclimated to the Pittsburgh offense and hardly a fantasy option at this stage.

Steelers acquired TE Vance McDonald and a fifth-round pick from the 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

Signed to a five-year extension by the previous regime in December, the 49ers tried to trade McDonald this offseason, but they had seemed content to stick with him the last couple weeks. Now they are giving him away for almost free. It is a great move for the Steelers, who lacked real weapons at the position. It will take him some time to settle in, but McDonald should push Jesse James for targets sooner rather than later.

49ers GM John Lynch said the team is "very pleased" with TE Vance McDonald.

The 49ers attempted to trade McDonald earlier this offseason, but Lynch praised his work in the preseason opener last week. "Even though it didn’t show up on the stat sheet, it was as good as I’ve seen him block," Lynch said. "And he competed extremely hard. We were very proud of Vance." McDonald started that game, and with rookie George Kittle dealing with a hamstring injury, he has a good shot to establish himself as the lead option.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco writes that Vance McDonald "is not assured a roster spot" entering training camp.

The new 49ers brass went as far as to openly admit they tried trading McDonald before, during, and after the draft. The 49ers have "already identified" rookie George Kittle "as a legitimate red-zone option," and are expected to give Kittle every opportunity to beat out McDonald for the starting job.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch writes "it wouldn’t be a surprise" if 49ers TE Vance McDonald does not make the final roster.

The 49ers openly attempted to trade McDonald during the draft, but cutting him for nothing is another story, one which would cost the 49ers cap space this year or leave dead money in 2018 depending on how the move is designated. It is still unclear why outgoing-GM Trent Baalke was allowed to give McDonald a five-year, $35-million extension last December, and it looks like the 49ers will have to eat some money to reverse that poor decision.

49ers GM John Lynch admitted the team was shopping TE Vance McDonald during the draft.

"That’s the reality of new regimes coming in, new schemes," Lynch said. "Nothing ended up happening, so Vance will come back and have an opportunity to compete." It always seemed odd ex-GM Trent Baalke was allowed to give McDonald a five-year, $35-million extension last December when it was clear he was on the way out, and now it looks like the new regime is stuck. It would cost San Francisco a little over $3.5 million against the cap to cut McDonald.
