Bjoern Werner is excited about returning to defensive end in the Jaguars' 4-3 defense.
"It’s a fresh start," Werner said of getting to play his college position. "I’m looking forward to this working. … That’s what I had done my whole career, basically. Now, I can focus on pass rush. That’s what you get judged in the league — production. That was a big part of why I was released with the Colts." Werner certainly has the right attitude, but he's a long-shot to crack a defensive line that's gotten quite deep on paper. May 17 - 2:58 PM

Jaguars signed OLB Bjoern Werner, formerly of the Colts.

A 2013 first-round pick, Werner was released in March despite having just a $1.04M salary. He was limited to 152 snaps last year and a healthy scratch in four of the final seven games. Werner will compete for a backup/special-teams role.

Colts waived OLB Bjoern Werner.

A truly colossal bust as the No. 24 pick of the 2013 draft, Werner was a healthy scratch six times last season. The German Vernon Gholston, Werner has 6.5 sacks through 38 NFL games. He'll likely be reduced to scrounging for special teams work in free agency. Colts GM Ryan Grigson has many messes to undo this offseason.

Colts OLB Bjoern Werner was a healthy scratch six times in 2015.

Reporter Mike Chappell expects the Colts to move on from their 2013 first-rounder after he played just 152 snaps on defense, and failed to cultivate a role on special teams. Werner has 6.5 sacks through 38 NFL games. Releasing him would create only $1.48 million in cap space, but it's time for the Colts to cut their losses.

The Colts have moved Bjoern Werner from rush linebacker to strong-side linebacker.

As expected. He's now Erik Walden's backup and won't come close to playing the 825 snaps he was in on last season. Werner, the 24th overall pick in 2013, managed a mere 18 quarterback hurries in 2014. His main job at strong-side linebacker will be to stop the run. Werner has two years left on his contract.

GM Ryan Grigson said knee and shoulder injuries slowed OLB Bjoern Werner down late in the year.

This smells of Grigson trying to cover up another one of his mistakes. Werner, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2013 draft, was a scratch in the AFC Championship Game after compiling just 18 quarterback hurries on 825 snaps in 2014. ESPN Colts reporter Mike Wells expects Werner to merely back up Erik Walden in 2015.

Speaking Monday, coach Chuck Pagano said OLB Bjoern Werner was inactive for the AFC Championship Game because the Colts needed an extra cornerback.

The 2013 first-round pick was benched during last week's game against the Broncos. Werner flashed his pass-rushing ability by recording four sacks within the first seven weeks of 2014, but only notched one more over the final nine games. Werner has been an abject bust to this point in his career.

Colts OLB Bjoern Werner is a healthy scratch for the AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.

The Colts' 2013 first-rounder, Werner had struggled mightily through the first two rounds of the playoffs, earning an abysmal -5.9 grade from Pro Football Focus despite playing just 63 snaps. Also inactive for the Colts is their de facto 2014 first-rounder Trent Richardson. Joining T-Rich and Werner on the sidelines are WR Griff Whalen, CB Sheldon Price, OT Xavier Nixon, C Jonotthan Harrison and DL Zach Kerr.

Bjoern Werner is expected to start at outside linebacker while Robert Mathis serves a four-game suspension.

Werner, the No. 24 overall pick last year, wasn't physically strong enough as a rookie and had just 2.5 sacks as a rotational player. He'll have a chance for a much bigger impact in Year 2, especially in the first four games. It's a situation for IDP owners to monitor as the weak-side "rush" linebacker in the Colts' 3-4 is a sack-happy position. Mathis racked up 19.5 of them last year.

The Colts want OLB Bjoern Werner to get stronger.

Werner, the No. 24 overall pick in last April's draft, appeared in 15 games as a rookie, making one start. He played just 352 defensive snaps and recorded 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks. GM Ryan Grigson stressed that Werner needs to get in the weight room. With Erik Walden and Robert Mathis under contract for 2014, Werner will likely be a rotational player again in his second season.

Bjoern Werner will start in place of Erik Walden in Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Werner will step in as the every-down strong-side linebacker. It's a big chance for the No. 24 overall pick who has battled a torn plantar fascia and ineffective play in limited snaps this season.

Colts OLB Bjoern Werner is out 4-6 weeks with a torn plantar fascia.

Indy may be regretting its preseason trade of Caesar Rayford right about now. The 24th pick in April's draft, Werner managed a half-sack and five tackles in Indy's first four games. He suffered the injury in Sunday's Week 4 win over the Jaguars. Erik Walden and Robert Mathis will play more in the meantime, with Cam Johnson filling the nickel 'backer role. Although Werner wasn't making a huge early-season difference, losing him is a blow to Indy's pass-rush depth.

The Colts are calling OLB Bjoern Werner's Week 4 right foot injury a sprain.

He'll have an MRI on Monday, which indicates the Colts still aren't sure the injury's exact extent. A Lisfranc sprain could shelve the first-round pick for half of the season. A Lisfranc fracture would end Werner's first year.

Colts OLB Bjoern Werner suffered a first-quarter right foot injury in Week 4 against the Jaguars and is doubtful to return.

The quick "doubtful" tag suggests the Colts' medical staff fears Werner has a serious injury. Erik Walden and Robert Mathis are the starting outside 'backers. A rookie, Werner was the 24th overall pick in April's draft.

Sports Illustrated's Greg Bedard doesn't think the Colts "are going to get the impact they hoped for from first-round pick Bjoern Werner this season."

Per Bedard, Werner has looked "extremely ordinary," has "average burst at the snap" and "hasn't shown many pass-rush moves" in the preseason. Although Werner had 13 sacks for Florida State last season en route to ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, his game tape showed the lack of edge explosion Bedard is referring to. Werner will start the season as a backup as he adjusts to the outside linebacker spot.
