Bengals DE Margus Hunt went back to Olympic-style training this offseason.
Hunt was an Olympic shot-put and discus thrower before ever dabbling in American football at Southern Methodist. Olympic-style training, per Hunt, focuses more on cleans, jerks, and snatches, rather than presses, curls, and muscle-isolating routines. He's bulked up to 300 pounds, but plans to get back down to his playing weight of 285-290. Entering a contract year with nothing to show for his first three NFL seasons, Hunt is definitely on the roster bubble. May 2 - 6:22 PM

Bengals activated DE Margus Hunt from the active/PUP list.

Hunt was originally believed to be in danger of opening the year on reserve/PUP. Instead, he's been cleared to practice just four days after beginning camp sidelined. The 2013 draft disappointment will attempt to take his long-awaited step forward this preseason, but there's little reason to believe he will.

Bengals DE Margus Hunt continues to battle a back injury that could result in him starting the season on reserve/PUP.

Hunt has been a complete non-factor since entering the league as a 2013 second-round pick. With little football playing experience when he entered the NFL as a 26-year-old, his body has been unable to hold up. Hunt missed most of OTAs and all of minicamp in the spring and may not be long for Cincinnati.

Bengals DE Margus Hunt will miss the remainder of OTAs and veteran minicamp with a back injury.

Hunt is "optimistic" he'll be ready for the start of training camp. He'd better be if he wants to make the team. Hunt has been injury-prone and slow to develop since being taken 53rd overall in 2013. The Bengals have since drafted Will Clarke and re-signed Michael Johnson, leaving Hunt as the No. 4 or 5 end.

Bengals DE Margus Hunt was absent from OTAs this week due to an undisclosed injury.

All the Bengals are saying is that it's not a season- or career-threatening injury. Entering his third season, this is a big year for Hunt. The Bengals are expecting him to take a big step in his development and finally enter the rotation on the defensive line. Any missed practice time is viewed as a concern for Hunt.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis believes sophomore DE Margus Hunt has made a "huge, huge, huge leap" in his second training camp.

"He’s one of the guys I’m excited to see play next Thursday night in Kansas City," said Lewis, referring to Cincinnati's preseason opener. A workout freak in last year's draft, Hunt played just over 150 snaps as a rookie, struggling mightily. He'll have a chance at more playing time with Michael Johnson gone to Tampa Bay.

The Bengals are hoping for a second-year jump from DE Margus Hunt.

"I can’t wait to see him, at 291 pounds and hunting guys," DL coach Jay Hayes said. "I think it’s going to be a very good improvement." Hunt was active for 10 games and played just 170 snaps as a rookie. The Bengals are optimistic he'll be a key contributor this season, but haven't committed to him as a starter. With Carlos Dunlap moving to Michael Johnson's old role, Hunt is competing with Wallace Gilberry and Robert Geathers at left end.

The Bengals want Margus Hunt to learn left end exclusively before moving him around the defensive line.

Hunt, the 53rd pick in last April's draft, played just 170 snaps as a rookie and admittedly struggled mightily to adjust to the NFL after just four years of organized football. DL coach Jay Hayes said Hunt would come to the sidelines and confusingly ask "What was that?" at times. Hunt is expected to compete with Wallace Gilberry for snaps at left end with Carlos Dunlap moving to right end.

The Bengals are "optimistic" DE Margus Hunt will be a key contributor this season.

A 2013 second-round pick, Hunt was active for 10 games and played just 170 snaps as a rookie. He's a candidate to replace Michael Johnson at right end, but will likely open the season in a rotation with Wallace Gilberry and Robert Geathers. Hunt could also see playing time at tackle in nickel packages.

Bengals declared DE Margus Hunt, CB Brandon Ghee, CB Dre Kirkpatrick, OG Mike Pollak, RB Rex Burkhead, OT Anthony Collins and WR Ryan Whalen inactive for Week 3 against the Packers.

It's Hunt's third straight healthy scratch. As any viewer of Hard Knocks knows, Hunt boasts no shortage of natural ability, but is still too raw to make an impact on a weekly basis. Kirkpatrick left Monday's game against the Steelers with a hamstring issue, and is week to week.

Bengals agreed to terms with No. 53 overall pick DE Margus Hunt.

One of the draft's most unique prospects, Hunt is a native of Estonia going on 26 years of age. The SMU product didn't light up the stat-sheet in college, but tore up the Combine, running a 4.60 40-yard dash and 1.62 ten-yard split. A mountainous 6-foot-8, 277 pounds, Hunt managed an eye-popping 38 bench-press reps. Bengals.com believes Hunt could be a frequent inactive as he learns the NFL game as a rookie, but his upside is definitely off the charts. It's just a matter of harnessing it, which is never easy.

Bengals.com suggests second-round DE Margus Hunt could be a weekly inactive as a rookie.

Hunt is short on experience but long on athleticism, and he landed in the perfect situation with the Bengals. The soon-to-be 26-year-old ran a 4.60 forty and repped 225 pounds 38 times at the Combine. The Bengals are loaded up front on the defensive line, and Hunt is no higher than fourth or fifth on the defensive end depth chart. He'll be given plenty of time to work on his craft.

Bengals selected SMU DE Margus Hunt with the No. 53 overall pick.

Hunt (6-foot-8 1/8, 277) blocked an NCAA record 17 kicks at SMU and notched eight sacks with 11.5 tackles for loss as a senior. Hunt's production and tape are not stellar -- and he turns 26 before the season -- but the Estonia native and 2006 Junior Olympics shotput and discus gold medalist is an athletic phenom. At the Combine, Hunt ran 4.6-flat with a running back-like 1.62 ten-yard split and repped 225 pounds 38 times. Concerns on Hunt are his inexperience, upright stiffness, and lack of edge-rushing tools. Hunt will have an opportunity to learn under Mike Zimmer as a reserve on an already loaded Bengals defensive front.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco provides four names to "watch" for the 49ers' No. 31 pick if they stay put: SMU DE Margus Hunt, Florida State DE/OLB Tank Carradine, FIU S Jon Cyprien, and Stanford TE Zach Ertz.

The 49ers are also believed to be interested in trading up, perhaps for Carradine. We expect Carradine and Cyprien to both be long gone by the 31st pick. San Francisco wants an eventual replacement for Justin Smith, and 6-foot-8, 277-pound Hunt could be a candidate to plug that hole. Ertz would probably be a fallback option. Buzz has died on him and he projects as a day-two pick.

A source tells NFL.com's Ian Rapoport that SMU DE Margus Hunt "won't get past (the) first round."

Hunt is a freak athlete, packing 4.60 speed onto his 6-foot-8, 277-pound body, but will turn 26 in July. He also had an underwhelming college career, and has raw technique. If Hunt goes on day one, it will be based on his athleticism alone. Hunt has been linked to the Jets in recent days.
