Bucs claimed OLB Khaseem Greene off waivers from the Bears.

The 2013 fourth-rounder was waived on Monday. Greene appeared in two games for Marc Trestman's beleaguered defense last season, making two ineffective starts. Despite being an ex-Bear, he came after Lovie Smith's time in Chicago. He'll try to crack the Bucs' 53-man roster as a special teamer.

Bears second-year OLB Khaseem Greene's roster spot appears safe.

Earlier in the summer, ESPN Chicago left Greene off its 53-man roster projection and believed he needed a strong camp to make it. That doesn't appear to be the case, as Greene is a core backup and special teamer. He'll back up both WLB Lance Briggs and SLB Shea McClellin while UDFA Christian Jones develops.

Bears second-year OLB Khaseem Greene is entering training camp on the roster bubble.

ESPN Chicago left Greene off its initial 53-man roster projection heading into camp. Greene, the 117th pick in last year's draft, played 236 defensive snaps as a rookie, but was overmatched both in coverage and against the run. Some believe the "game looked too big" for him. He'll have to beat out talented UDFA Christian Jones and/or special teams ace Jordan Senn for a roster spot.

ESPN Chicago believes "the game looked too big" for Bears LB Khaseem Greene during his rookie season.

Greene saw action at weak-side linebacker with Lance Briggs on the shelf, making four starts. He was exposed badly in both run and pass defense. The Bears aren't throwing in the towel on their 2013 fourth-round pick, but Greene won't be counted on to start in 2014. He'll return as a reserve and special teamer.

The Bears will turn to fourth-round pick Khaseem Greene to replace WLB Lance Briggs.

It's unclear whether Greene will be involved in sub-packages or just a two-down weak-side 'backer. The Bears are now starting two rookies at linebacker, including MLB Jon Bostic. Briggs is expected to miss at least five games.

Fourth-round pick Khaseem Greene is practicing behind Lance Briggs at weak-side linebacker in Bears camp.

He's Briggs' possible heir apparent. Greene will likely spend his rookie year playing special teams and learning, but possesses athleticism on par with an NFL starter. Briggs is owed $5.25 million in 2014. He turns 33 this November.

Bears agreed to terms with No. 117 overall pick OLB Khaseem Greene on a four-year contract.

Greene (6-foot 3/4, 241) plays faster than his 4.71 forty time indicates, and he also has a nose for the football. He led Rutgers with 125 tackles and forced six fumbles as a senior. Greene projects as Lance Briggs' heir apparent at weak-side linebacker, but he'll likely focus on special teams as a rookie.

The Bears will use fourth-round pick Khaseem Greene at outside linebacker and on special teams as a rookie.

A weak-side linebacker at Rutgers, Greene could be 32-year-old Lance Briggs' heir apparent. "Fifteen (forced fumbles) in a career, that's difficult to do," GM Phil Emery noted of Greene's Rutgers career. "Here's a guy that really fits what we're trying to do." The Bears' defense led the NFL in turnovers in 2012.

Bears selected Rutgers OLB Khaseem Greene with the No. 117 overall pick.

Greene (6-foot 3/4, 241) earned Big East Defensive POY honors as both a junior and senior. A weak-side 'backer, Greene paced the Scarlet Knights in 2012 tackles (125) and forced fumbles (6) as the lynchpin of Rutgers' No. 4-ranked defense. Greene ran 4.71 at the Combine with a 1.62 ten-yard split and did 17 reps on the bench. He plays faster than the forty time indicates with sideline-to-sideline range both in coverage and run support. Greene fits quite well in the Bears defensive scheme and projects to the weakside.
