Johnathan Cyprien is "the favorite" for the Jags' strong safety job.
He will battle 2015 fourth-rounder James Sample for the starting job. Cyprien has been a disappointment since arriving in the second round of the 2013 draft, but the addition of a true center fielder in Tashaun Gipson should allow him to play a more comfortable role closer to the line of scrimmage. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, this is a make-or-break season for Cyprien. Jul 16 - 11:21 AM

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien isn't a lock to keep his starting job.

Cyprien has started every game he's been healthy the past three seasons, but is a liability against the pass and had a team-high 21 missed tackles last year. The Jaguars could start sophomore James Sample and convert Cyprien into a sub-package linebacker to limit his coverage exposures. The Florida Times-Union expects Sample to open 2016 opposite FS Tashaun Gipson.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien will play closer to the line of scrimmage this season.

"We took a look at him and divided it – when he was close to the line of scrimmage and when he was back – and where did he play better and was more consistent," coach Gus Bradley said. "We felt being in the box allowed him to utilize his skill set." Jacksonville strengthened the secondary by adding ball-hawking FS Tashaun Gipson in free agency, and that move should allow Cyprien to play more in the box. The Jaguars have done a solid job adding defensive talent this offseason.

The Jaguars have discussed moving SS Johnathan Cyprien to linebacker.

With the addition of FS Tashaun Gipson to shore up the back end of the defense, the Jaguars are playing around with the idea of getting Cyprien even closer to the line of scrimmage. Even when he entered the NFL, Cyprien was viewed as a box safety because of his severe deficiencies in coverage. Teams saw what the Rams did with Mark Barron, turning him from safety into a weak-side linebacker, and Barron just cashed in with a five-year, $45 million deal on Wednesday.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien was not on Friday's injury report.

Cyprien practiced in full this week after missing Weeks 2-3. He'll slot straight back into the lineup and be a DB1 in IDP leagues this week against the Colts. RG Brandon Linder, WR Marqise Lee, DT Sen'Derrick Marks, RB Denard Robinson and TE Julius Thomas have all been ruled out for Week 4.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien (finger/calf) is doubtful for Week 2 against the Dolphins.

Cyprien missed most of the preseason with a broken bone in his hand. He was able to make it back for the season opener, but injured his calf in the loss. With CB Dwayne Gratz (ankle) also out, the Jaguars' secondary should present an easy target for Ryan Tannehill.

The Jaguars expect SS Johnathan Cyprien (broken hand) back for the regular season opener.

Cyprien's injury is slightly more complicated than the one to teammate Julius Thomas, but both are expected to be on the field when the season begins. Even if he suits up, Cyprien will likely wear a cast the first several weeks of the season.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien will miss the rest of the preseason with a broken hand.

Cyprien suffered the injury in the Jaguars' preseason opener. It is similar to the injury Julius Thomas suffered in the same game, and both players are expected to miss the rest of the preseason. Cyprien has had an up-and-down career since being selected as the No. 33 overall pick in the 2013 draft, but he finished out 2014 strong.

The Jaguars want third-year SS Johnathan Cyprien to be their version of Kam Chancellor.

Coach Gus Bradley developed Chancellor in Seattle. Since being the No. 33 overall pick in 2013, Cyprien has had an up-and-down two seasons as he's been exposed in coverage. The Jaguars hope that the signing of FS Sergio Brown will allow them to play Cyprien closer to the line of scrimmage and focus on the run game. Cyprien was PFF's No. 1 safety in run defense Weeks 15-17 last season.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien (concussion) has been cleared to play in Week 3 against the Colts.

Cyprien was knocked out in Week 1 and missed last week's blowout loss to the Redskins. The Jaguars looked competent on defense against the Eagles when Cyprien was in the game. They've since surrendered 75 points the past six quarters. Cyprien is a big hitter and key cog in Jacksonville's young defense.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien remains in the concussion protocol.

Cyprien is having trouble getting cleared after appearing to get knocked out during Week 1 against the Eagles. The Jags' defense has given up 75 points in six quarters since he departed.

SS Johnathan Cyprien (concussion) has been ruled out of the Jaguars' Week 2 matchup with the Redskins.

Cyprien suffered a concussion against the Eagles Week 1, and was not able to practice all week. Josh Evans will likely start in Cyprien's place on Sunday.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien is in the concussion protocol.

Cyprien, a key piece of a rapidly improving defense, appeared to briefly lose consciousness when his head hit the turf in Week 1. It's not a coincidence that Nick Foles and the Chip Kelly offense finally started clicking after Cyprien left. Robert Griffin III should be hoping the second-year man doesn't get cleared before Sunday.

Jaguars SS Johnathan Cyprien left Sunday's Week 1 game against the Eagles with a possible concussion and is done for the day.

Cyprien hit his head very hard on the turf and may have briefly lost consciousness. The second-year breakout candidate walked under his own power, presumably for concussion testing.

Jaguars.com considers second-year SS Johnathan Cyprien the most-likely Jag to "rise" in 2014.

Cyprien was routinely torched his first two months in the league, but steadied down the stretch. He's one of the reasons the Jags went 4-4 over their final eight games. Cyprien figures to remain a work-in-progress in coverage this season, but could be a difference maker against the run.
