49ers exercised FS Eric Reid's fifth-year option for 2017.
GM Trent Baalke almost confirmed as much last month. Reid did not play well last year, but he is a talented young safety the 49ers would like to keep around for a long time. It would not be surprising if the two sides worked out an extension before this season. The option will pay $5.676 million in 2017. May 2 - 11:04 AM

49ers GM Trent Baalke said he plans to retain contract-year FS Eric Reid.

The 49ers will extend Reid or exercise his fifth-year option. Reid is coming off a down season, but is one of the league's most-talented safeties. He'll make $5.68 million in 2017 if the 49ers pick up his option.

49ers third-year FS Eric Reid said he contemplated retirement in the offseason due to concussion concerns.

It's the same reason teammates ILB Chris Borland and RT Anthony Davis hung up the cleats. "I will continue to evaluate my own situation," Reid said. "If I have another concussion and I don’t feel like I can play any more, then I won’t. If I [have another concussion], and if I feel that I still can play, then I will. It’s just a case-by-case basis." Reid has suffered three concussions through two NFL seasons.

49ers FS Eric Reid exited Week 16 against the Chargers with a concussion.

Reid is out for the game. Reid suffered two concussions in 2013. Craig Dahl is in at free safety for the 49ers.

49ers FS Eric Reid (concussion) is expected to play in Sunday's game at New Orleans.

It's a surprise considering this is Reid's second concussion of the year. The impressive and hard-hitting rookie will be in the starting lineup barring a setback in warmups.

49ers FS Eric Reid sustained a concussion in Sunday's Week 10 game against the Panthers.

It was a scary play as Reid tried to step in front of Mike Tolbert and got absolutely trucked. It's his second concussion of the year -- his first one came in Week 2.

49ers FS Eric Reid (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 3.

Reid says he's symptom free with only one test to pass before receiving medical clearance following Sunday night's scary brain injury. "I have to check back tomorrow," Reid said. "So it’s just a waiting game." Reid has been one of the NFL's most impressive defensive rookies through two weeks.

49ers FS Eric Reid left Sunday night's Week 2 game against the Seahawks with a head injury.

Reid suffered a concussion in the second quarter and is out for the rest of the game. He'll need to pass the NFL's concussion protocol before returning to practice. Reid was replaced by Craig Dahl.

First-round pick Eric Reid has been named the 49ers' starting free safety.

That had been the expectation since the 49ers traded up to select Reid in April's draft. Reid is expected to stay back in center field while SS Donte Whitner patrols closer to the line of scrimmage.

CSN Bay Area reports 49ers first-round FS Eric Reid has gotten off to a "solid start" at training camp and is the front-runner to start.

The 49ers didn't trade up from No. 31 to 18 to select Reid and prop him on the bench. Craig Dahl had a strong spring, but he was never a realistic option to start for the win-now, Super Bowl-ready Niners. We expect to see Reid play a lot up high, while SS Donte Whitner focuses on plugging holes near the line.

49ers signed No. 18 overall pick S Eric Reid to a four-year contract.

Niners GM Trent Baalke traded up to land coveted LSU alum Reid, sending Dallas the Nos. 31 and 74 picks. Although Reid lacks ideal hip fluidity and change of direction, the 49ers won't ask him to cover receivers one on one. He's a rocked-up, straight-line speedster who'll play in single-high and two-deep safety looks while Donte Whitner focuses on plugging the run in the box. Reid will replace Dashon Goldson, who recorded 69 tackles and three picks in 2012.

The 49ers believe No. 18 pick Eric Reid has the ability to be an "all-around safety."

"He can play high, he can play low, he's done a lot in the back half, and he's done a lot moving up into the box," GM Trent Baalke said. "We felt he inserted strong and played the type of ball that we wanted to see out of safety." CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes the Niners will be disappointed if Reid can't earn a starting job opposite Donte Whitner "decisively." Reid should have what it takes to beat out Craig Dahl.

49ers traded up to select LSU SS Eric Reid with the No. 18 overall pick, sending the Nos. 31 and 74 overall picks to the Cowboys.

Reid (6-foot-1 1/4, 213) made 29 starts in the Tigers' secondary, recording 4.5 career tackles for loss and six interceptions. A straight-linish strong safety type, Reid displays stiff hips and takes too many poor tackling angles on film. He is a high-character prospect with great work ethic. Reid ran 4.53 in Indy with highly explosive jumps, reaching 40.5" in the vertical and 11-foot-2 in the broad. While Reid offers upside, he's going to struggle in one-on-one NFL coverage situations. He'll try to fill the shoes of first-team All-Pro Dashon Goldson, who signed with the Bucs in free agency.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn, LSU SS Eric Reid has been red flagged by NFL teams for "bad shoulders."

This isn't the first time we've caught wind of this rumor, but it is the first time it's coming from a reliable source. McGinn is a Hall of Fame journalist. McGinn still sends Reid to the Bengals in his final mock draft, suggesting not all is lost for the athletic LSU alum. Cincinnati certainly needs safety help.

A league source tells The Sideline View's Lance Zierlein that LSU S Eric Reid's stock is "on the rise," and that he could sneak into round one.

Reid is a big hitter who showed well at the Combine, but questions about his cover skills have had him almost exclusively projected as a day-two pick. Rotoworld draft guru Josh Norris believes "perceived athletic upside" would be the only reason Reid goes in round one.
