The 49ers are converting S Eric Reid to linebacker.
Reid has played 58 snaps at weak-side linebacker over the past two weeks, starting Week 7. Reid began the year as an every-down player at strong safety before injuring his knee. He missed Weeks 3-5. Jaquiski Tartt won Reid's job while he was sidelined. "This is my contract year, so when they broke the news to me, I wondered what the reasoning was to make the move," Reid said. "Right now I just trust the film I have at safety is good enough to enter free agency with, and now I’ll get some film at linebacker, as well." Reid said he's been given no assurances for 2018 by the 49ers. Oct 26 - 5:21 PM

CSN Bay Area doesn’t expect the 49ers to extend contract-year S Eric Reid.

Reid missed six games to injury last year, and is out multiple weeks with a PCL issue. He's a questionable fit in DC Robert Saleh's scheme, where he's limited to strong safety. The 49ers may view Reid as expendable with Jaquiski Tartt signed through 2018. With Carlos Hyde and Daniel Kilgore in contract years, Reid could be allowed to walk in free agency.

49ers SS Eric Reid (knee) is expected to miss multiple weeks.

Reid is dealing with a PCL issue, and coach Kyle Shanahan said he's definitely out for Week 3 against the Rams and likely longer. Jaquiski Tartt is expected to take over as the starter, but he's dealing with a neck injury.

49ers SS Eric Reid exited Week 2 against the Seahawks with a knee injury.

Reid pulled up with a non-contact knee injury before halftime, but he was back on the field after the break. After limping off once, Reid once again went down with a non-contact injury in the third quarter. At this point, it would be surprising if he got back into the game.

Eric Reid is happy to be playing strong safety in the 49ers' new defensive scheme.

Reid has played primarily in schemes with interchangeable safeties throughout his career, but new DC Robert Saleh's defense gives defined roles to each safety. "I’ve been used to the interchangeability type of role, so it is new," Reid said. "I feel like I’m just using what God has blessed me with more, which is my size, being in the box, in the run game." Reid's play has tailed off in recent years, but perhaps the new role will help him bounce back in his contract season. The Niners plan to use Reid like Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor.

Contact-year S Eric Reid hasn't had extension talks with the 49ers.

Reid was limited to 10 games by a torn biceps last season. His play has fallen off the further the 49ers have gotten from the Jim Harbaugh era. ESPN's Nick Wagoner reports Reid is tentatively expected to shift from free safety to strong safety in new DC Robert Saleh's system.

49ers FS Eric Reid (torn biceps) said he is almost back to full health.

Earlier this month, Reid said he "would be practicing" if the 49ers had a game. Reid has struggled since a promising rookie season, and San Francisco is reportedly "contemplating" moving CB Jimmie Ward to his free safety spot. The 49ers are in no position to cut a promising player, but Reid clearly has plenty to prove entering the final year of his rookie deal.

49ers FS Eric Reid is done for the season with a torn biceps.

It's a big loss for the 49ers, not that they have anything left to play for with nine straight losses. One of their best defenders in the secondary, Reid amassed 62 tackles, five pass breakups, and two forced turnovers in the 49ers' first ten games. The 2013 first-rounder will be in a contract year in 2017.

The 49ers fear FS Eric Reid suffered a torn biceps in Sunday's Week 11 loss to New England.

Reid left the stadium with his right arm in a sling. A biceps tear would almost certainly end Reid's season. The 18th overall pick in the 2013 draft, Reid has been having a below-average year. He is signed through 2017.

49ers exercised FS Eric Reid's fifth-year option for 2017.

GM Trent Baalke almost confirmed as much last month. Reid did not play well last year, but he is a talented young safety the 49ers would like to keep around for a long time. It would not be surprising if the two sides worked out an extension before this season. The option will pay $5.676 million in 2017.

49ers GM Trent Baalke said he plans to retain contract-year FS Eric Reid.

The 49ers will extend Reid or exercise his fifth-year option. Reid is coming off a down season, but is one of the league's most-talented safeties. He'll make $5.68 million in 2017 if the 49ers pick up his option.

49ers third-year FS Eric Reid said he contemplated retirement in the offseason due to concussion concerns.

It's the same reason teammates ILB Chris Borland and RT Anthony Davis hung up the cleats. "I will continue to evaluate my own situation," Reid said. "If I have another concussion and I don’t feel like I can play any more, then I won’t. If I [have another concussion], and if I feel that I still can play, then I will. It’s just a case-by-case basis." Reid has suffered three concussions through two NFL seasons.

49ers FS Eric Reid exited Week 16 against the Chargers with a concussion.

Reid is out for the game. Reid suffered two concussions in 2013. Craig Dahl is in at free safety for the 49ers.

49ers FS Eric Reid (concussion) is expected to play in Sunday's game at New Orleans.

It's a surprise considering this is Reid's second concussion of the year. The impressive and hard-hitting rookie will be in the starting lineup barring a setback in warmups.

49ers FS Eric Reid sustained a concussion in Sunday's Week 10 game against the Panthers.

It was a scary play as Reid tried to step in front of Mike Tolbert and got absolutely trucked. It's his second concussion of the year -- his first one came in Week 2.
