Panthers signed sixth-round RB Kenjon Barner to a four-year contract.
The Panthers have now signed their entire draft class. GM Dave Gettleman referred to Barner as a "little scatback" after selecting him, and we wouldn't expect him to contribute much on offense as a rookie. With a crowded backfield and stable of return men, Barner could be a weekly inactive this season. May 23 - 4:09 PM

Panthers coach Ron Rivera believes RB Kenjon Barner was a "value pick" at No. 182.

Rivera thinks the same is true of fifth-round LB A.J. Klein. "They had good college careers that did things consistently over a period of time," Rivera said. "Guys like that, they may not become superstars, but they’re definitely going to be contributors." Rivera's comments come after GM Dave Gettleman called Barner a "little scatback." Value pick or not, it's clear the Panthers aren't counting on Barner to be a major contributor on offense as a rookie.

The Panthers like No. 182 overall pick RB Kenjon Barner's big-play ability and believe that initially it will translate well to third-down situations.

Carolina also likes Barner on special teams as a return man and gunner. It's hard to see Barner getting much playing time on offense, especially if DeAngelo Williams remains on the roster. The Panthers also have a stable of return men, so Barner could easily be a weekly inactive throughout the year.

Panthers GM Dave Gettleman calls sixth-round RB Kenjon Barner a "little scatback."

Barner has scatback size at 5-foot-9, 196 pounds, but was known more for his straight-line ability than elusiveness at Oregon. He posted a solid but unspectacular 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine. Even if the Panthers move on from DeAngelo Williams — which they're not expected to do — Barner is unlikely to make an impact in the Panthers' backfield as a rookie.

Panthers selected Oregon RB Kenjon Barner with the No. 182 overall pick.

Barner (5-foot-9 1/4, 196) was the workhorse in Chip Kelly's 2012 offense, rushing 278 times for 1,767 yards (6.36 YPC) and 21 touchdowns. He added 20 catches for 256 yards (12.8 YPR) and two more scores. Despite his smallish stature, Barner falls forward and isn't a step-waster, also flashing an ability to run through arm tackles. He's more straight-linish than elusive and isn't going to make NFL defenders miss. Barner ran 4.52 at the Combine with a 1.60 ten-yard split. Perhaps he is being brought in as a kick returner, but Carolina adding another running back is somewhat comical.
Apr 27 - 4:20 PM

Oregon RB Kenjon Barner ran forty times of 4.44 and 4.46 at the NFL Scouting Combine.

A 5-foot-9, 196-pound straight-line speedster, Barner should be attractive to teams that need speed in the backfield and are willing to give a change-of-pace back 8-10 touches per game. As a senior in Chip Kelly's up-tempo Oregon offense, Barner handled 278 carries and averaged 6.4 yards per rush attempt.
