Lions coach Jim Caldwell blamed the offensive line for Theo Riddick's struggles on the ground Week 3.
"We’ve just got to block better for him," Caldwell said. "We didn’t get him going or give him an alley to get him going. It was more execution up front." The Lions apparently did execute well for Dwayne Washington, who sparked the running game in the second quarter and finished with 29 more yards on the same number of carries. Actually able to create yards on his own, Washington is a much better fit as the lead back than Riddick, and he should start to see more work this week. Sep 27 - 9:08 AM

Theo Riddick rushed 10 times for nine yards and hauled in 7-of-9 targets for 39 yards Week 3 against the Packers.

Riddick tried his best to torpedo the offense early, losing ground on five of his first seven touches and finishing the first half with six carries for -11 yards. He found more success -- not a high bar -- on the ground in the second half, but it is painfully clear he cannot be the lead back while Ameer Abdullah is sidelined. Dwayne Washington needs to have a bigger role moving forward, and he needs to be owned in all fantasy formats.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell said RB Theo Riddick will be "the lead guy" with Ameer Abdullah (foot, injured reserve) sidelined.

Riddick should start and play a big role, but he is not built to be an early-down workhorse. Riddick had never seen more than seven attempts in a game before last week, and he owns a career 3.23 yards per carry average. Dwayne Washington will have a big role on early downs and near the goal-line. It would not be surprising if Washington outscores Riddick in standard formats.

Theo Riddick rushed 11 times for 37 yards and caught 4-of-5 targets for 28 yards in the Lions' Week 2 loss to the Titans.

Riddick got a big bump in playing time when Ameer Abdullah left with a second-quarter foot injury, but couldn't capitalize beyond his passing-game contributions. Still, the arrow is pointing up on Riddick's fantasy value because he will be the Lions' primary back for as long as Abdullah is out. No. 3 back Dwayne Washington had only four carries in Sunday's loss to Tennessee.
Sep 18 - 6:01 PM

Theo Riddick rushed seven times for 45 yards and a touchdown and caught 5-of-5 targets for 63 yards and another touchdown in the Lions' Week 1 win over the Colts.

This was an ideal matchup for Riddick due to the Colts' lack of foot speed at inside linebacker, where 33-year-old D'Qwell Jackson patrols the middle of the field. Riddick capitalized and then some and even shined on his carries, ripping off two critical runs on the Lions' final drive to set up Matt Prater's game-winning field goal. Riddick owners might want to consider selling high after this one, however. Riddick's two TDs were fluky for a player who has never been a big-time touchdown scorer, and nor has Riddick ever been as successful as a rusher as he was on Sunday. We'd bet against this box-score effort being a sign of things to come.
Sep 11 - 8:27 PM

Theo Riddick returned to Sunday's Week 1 game after being checked for a concussion.

He immediately peeled off back-to-back big runs after receiving clearance to return. Riddick previously went into the locker room to be evaluated for the brain injury. Doctors evidently determined that Riddick is fine.
Sep 11 - 7:20 PM

Theo Riddick exited the Lions' Week 1 game to be evaluated for a concussion.

With Riddick in the locker room, Ameer Abdullah immediately caught a TD pass to put the Lions up 28-18 over the Colts. Before exiting, Riddick rushed five times for 26 yards and a touchdown and caught 3-of-3 targets for 31 yards.
Sep 11 - 6:54 PM

Lions signed RB Theo Riddick to a three-year, $12.75 million extension through 2019.

Riddick wants to run the ball more this season, but that's unlikely to happen. According to Rich Hribar's Week 1 Worksheet, 93.7 percent of Riddick's fantasy production last season came in the pass game when he caught 80 balls for 697 yards and three scores. He's a useful piece in a pass-happy league.
Sep 9 - 12:15 PM

Theo Riddick rushed three times for 35 yards and caught 1-of-2 targets for seven yards in the Lions' third preseason game.

He got all of his yards on a 34-yard run. Riddick saw some red-zone work over Ameer Abdullah, but isn't going to be a factor in the run game. He's a low-end FLEX in PPR.
Aug 27 - 9:49 PM

MLive's Justin Rogers believes it is "unreasonable" to expect a lot more carries for Theo Riddick.

Riddick made his bones in the passing game last season, recording 80 receptions for 697 yards and three scores, but he was only given 43 touches in the running game. Even with significant questions at running back, it does not sound like the Lions will give him a ton more work on the ground. Riddick is still in the FLEX mix in PPR formats because of his involvement in the passing game.
Jul 25 - 12:31 PM

Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter expects RB Theo Riddick to get more carries this year.

Riddick led all NFL running backs with 80 catches last season, but he only logged 43 carries. The 25-year-old has struggled running the ball throughout his career, averaging 2.9 yards on just 72 rushing attempts. Riddick may occupy a slightly larger running-game role following Joique Bell's release, but he'll mostly be used on passing downs with Ameer Abdullah working as the lead back.
Jun 9 - 3:23 PM

Lions RB Theo Riddick is interested in an extension.

The Lions haven’t opened talks with Riddick, but could extend him closer to training camp. Riddick had a breakout 2015, leading all running backs with a 80/697/3 receiving line. 24-year-old Riddick is owed $675,000 in the final year of his rookie deal.
Mar 12 - 7:19 PM

Theo Riddick rushed twice for four yards and caught 4-of-5 targets for 29 yards in the Lions' Week 17 win over the Bears.

Although Riddick remained ineffective on the ground in 2015 (3.09 YPC), he become one of the league's most dangerous receiving backs as a third-year pro. Riddick's 80 receptions led all NFL running backs, while his usage grew under interim OC Jim Bob Cooter as a high-percentage safety valve for Matthew Stafford. Riddick will enter his contract year in 2016. The poor man's Sproles turns 25 in May and should work in a similar role next season.
Jan 3 - 5:13 PM

Theo Riddick rushed seven times for 20 yards and caught 7-of-8 targets for 63 yards in the Lions' Week 16 win over San Francisco.

Although he remains deficient as a ball carrier, Riddick has emerged as one of the NFL's highest-impact pass-catching running backs this season. He's up to 76 receptions, breaking a Lions record for single-season catches by a running back and leading the league at his position. The Lions will wrap up their 2015 campaign in a Week 17 date with the Bears.
Sun, Dec 27, 2015 05:05:00 PM

Theo Riddick logged two carries for three yards and caught both of his targets for 27 yards in the Lions' Week 15 win over the Saints.

Riddick contributed one of the game’s most memorable plays, juking Dannell Ellerbe right out of his shoes on a check-down pass in the first half. Unfortunately he wasn’t targeted again until about halfway through the fourth quarter. Riddick leads all running backs with 69 receptions this year. He’ll add to that total next week against the Niners.
