Theo Riddick had one carry for three yards in Detroit's third preseason game.
Ameer Abdullah started, but Riddick mixed in with the first team. He added one catch for six yards on his lone target. With Joique Bell expected to be ready for Week 1, Riddick doesn't project to have a role in the Lions offense. Riddick has 12 carries for 42 yards through three preseason games. Aug 28 - 10:57 PM

Theo Riddick rushed three times for four yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Redskins, adding a nine-yard reception.

Riddick again got the "start" in place of Joique Bell, but alternated reps with Ameer Abdullah. Neither player was in the game long as the Lions used their first-team offense sparingly. Riddick may be technically ahead of Abdullah on the depth chart, but the second-round rookie is the heavy favorite to complement Bell, and perhaps supplant him, in Week 1. Riddick is a fringe consideration in deeper PPR leagues. He has 11 carries for 39 yards through two exhibition contests.

Theo Riddick rushed eight times for 35 yards in the Lions' preseason opener.

A passing-down specialist who has struggled as a runner throughout his career, Riddick earned praise for his play against the Jets. "Theo ran well," coach Jim Caldwell said. "Theo got some tough yards, great effort plays and then also he made some people miss, which he's certainly capable of doing." With Ameer Abdullah in the fold, Riddick has little chance of earning a significant role in the Lions' offense, but he is a name to keep in mind if Abdullah or Joique Bell goes down.

Lions RB Theo Riddick's role is not expected to change this season.

He'll be a passing-down package back behind Joique Bell and Ameer Abdullah. Beat writer Dave Birkett does anticipate Riddick getting "maybe a little more action in (the) slot," but ultimately Riddick probably won't make a fantasy dent unless Bell or Abdullah goes down. Riddick finished 2014 with 20 carries and 34 receptions. He played more than expected due to Reggie Bush's injuries.

Lions No. 2 quarterback Dan Orlovsky praised Theo Riddick on Tuesday.

"Theo's too good to not put on the field," Orlovsky said. "Theo has stuff that you can't coach, that you can't teach, that you're born from God with. He just has an ability to get open better than everyone else." It's humorous because Orlovsky lavished similar praise on Riddick last summer. Riddick indeed flashed as a pass catcher in 2014, but his depth chart standing took a hit with the selection of Ameer Abdullah. MLive.com believes Riddick could see major time in the slot this year.

MLive.com's Kyle Meinke envisions most of Theo Riddick's snaps coming at slot receiver this season.

With the selection of Ameer Abdullah, Riddick's no longer the front-runner for passing-down work out of the backfield. If he wants to play, slot receiver may be his best bet. The Lions have Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate followed up by a host of unknowns on the depth chart out wide. Veterans Lance Moore and Ryan Broyles appear to be the favorites inside but also may not even make the team.

Theo Riddick's role is expected to take a hit following the selection of second-round RB Ameer Abdullah.

When Reggie Bush was cut, Riddick was penciled into the vital passing back role. But Abdullah at No. 54 is going to throw a wrench into those plans as he is a skilled pass catcher and more dynamic space player than Riddick. When Joique Bell and Bush were healthy last year, Riddick barely sniffed the field.

Coach Jim Caldwell expressed confidence in Theo Riddick last week.

With Reggie Bush gone, Riddick is entrenched in his natural passing back role. "We try and give (the ball) to the guys who are going to do something with it, and I think he's going to be one of those guys who's going to force us to give him the ball more," Caldwell said. "I think you're really going to see him come along." Riddick racked up 367 yards and four touchdowns on just 54 touches last season. It's an unsustainable rate but gave PPR owners a glimpse of the ceiling he has. Any role Riddick has in the run game behind starter Joique Bell will depend on what the Lions do in the draft.

Theo Riddick is expected to have the first shot at taking the snaps vacated by Reggie Bush.

The Lions only saved $1.7M by cutting Bush, but it was an easy decision because they know Riddick is capable of filling that "passing back" role. Despite touching the ball just 54 times in 2014, he produced 367 yards and four touchdowns while jumping off the screen in space. Per PFF, Riddick caught 2.45 yards per route run last season, best of any back in the league. Joique Bell is going to handle all the inside running work, but Riddick is going to be a PPR asset for fantasy owners.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew raved about Theo Riddick at the NFL Combine.

Riddick capitalized on his limited playing time last season, turning 54 touches into 367 yards and four TDs. "When you have a guy like Theo Riddick, who can make a difference in the passing game, that brings value to your team," Mayhew said. One of the reasons the Lions are considering cutting Reggie Bush is because of Riddick's ability as a passing back. He jumps off the screen when he gets in space.

Theo Riddick secured 4-of-7 targets for 39 yards in the Lions' Wild Card Round loss to the Cowboys.

Riddick got playing time in Detroit's two-minute drill at the end of the first half, catching Matthew Stafford checkdowns for gains of 7 and 13. Riddick reentered late in the fourth quarter and gained 15 on a screen. Turning 24 in May, Riddick may make Reggie Bush expendable this offseason. He is not a between-the-tackles back, but is very useful in passing situations and has more open-field "juice" than early-down grinder Joique Bell.
Jan 4 - 8:14 PM

Theo Riddick caught 5-of-7 targets for 34 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' Week 17 loss to the Packers.

Riddick was held without a rushing attempt. A second-year sixth rounder, Riddick's 367 yards from scrimmage were 316 more than he managed as a rookie, but he still enters the postseason as a distant third on the depth chart behind Joique Bell and Reggie Bush. He won't be a compelling DFS play against the Cowboys in the Wild Card round.

Theo Riddick had zero carries and caught two passes for 10 yards in Sunday's Week 16 win at Chicago.

Even with Joique Bell benched for the first quarter, Riddick didn't have a role. His skill set is far too similar to Reggie Bush's.

Theo Riddick rushed once for four yards in Week 15 against Minnesota.

The Lions claimed publicly after Riddick's Week 14 goose egg that he hadn't been eliminated from the offense, but he was barely on the field in this one. He is Reggie Bush's direct backup as a passing-game specialist.

Speaking Thursday, Lions OC Joe Lombardi called Theo Riddick's one-snap Week 14 an "anomaly."

"We're gonna use him in the future," Lombardi insisted. By the "future," it appears Lombardi means Week 15, but we still wouldn't expect more than 2-3 touches. The Lions aren't ready to run Riddick out there at the expense of a healthy Reggie Bush.
