Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said he thinks Ryan Griffin can be a No. 2 quarterback.
Griffin was claimed off waivers in Week 1 last year. The Bucs plan to keep Mike Glennon, but view Griffin as a potential backup. "I’d love to have Mike Glennon on our football team, but it's a business," Koetter said. "If something happens that he's not with us, that's why we acquired Ryan Griffin last year to hopefully ascend into that spot. We're in good position, we're definitely in the top few teams in the league with our depth. We're just going to have to see how it plays out." Apr 2 - 9:05 PM

Bucs claimed QB Ryan Griffin off waivers from the Saints.

The longtime Sean Payton favorite will slot in as the Bucs' third quarterback, though it's possible he'll ultimately be waived with the hope that he can be snuck through to the practice squad. The Bucs have one of the league's most stable backup situations with Mike Glennon.

Peter Schrager of Fox Sports expects the Buccaneers to address quarterback during the waiver period.

Schrager mentioned Saints castoff Ryan Griffin as a player to keep an eye out for. Former SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who tried out for the Bucs last week, is also a possibility. Griffin posted a mediocre 75.8 passer rating during the preseason but has always been a favorite of GM Jason Licht.

Saints released QB Ryan Griffin.

Griffin lost out to Luke McCown for backup duties. He struggled with accuracy this preseason, completing just 59 percent of his passes. Third-round rookie Garrett Grayson is locked in as the Saints' No. 3 quarterback.

Ryan Griffin and Luke McCown are expected to battle for the Saints' No. 2 quarterback job.

Griffin should be considered the favorite after lighting up the preseason last year to the tune of a 62.3 completion percentage, 6.88 YPA, 3:1 TD-to-INT ratio and 90.3 passer rating. Of course, it probably won't matter much as Drew Brees has missed just one game since joining the Saints in 2006. Third-round rookie Garrett Grayson is locked in as the developmental third quarterback.

Saints promoted QB Ryan Griffin from the practice squad.

Griffin has spent the entire year on the practice squad after failing to beat out Luke McCown for backup duties. He'll serve as the No. 3 quarterback for Sunday's regular season finale.

Saints signed QB Ryan Griffin to the practice squad.

Griffin was waived on Tuesday and cleared waivers Wednesday. It was a bit of gamesmanship by the Saints, as they knew no team was going to claim a third-string quarterback when rosters were already at 53. The Saints will continue to develop Griffin on their practice squad and groom him as their future No. 2.

Saints waived QB Ryan Griffin.

Griffin was beaten out by Luke McCown to back up Drew Brees. His late release is a bit of dirty pool from the Saints, as it lessens Griffin's chances of latching on elsewhere. The Saints almost certainly waited to make the move to increase their odds of sneaking Griffin through to the practice squad. Griffin had a solid preseason, completing 48-of-77 passes for 530 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. A second-year undrafted free agent, Griffin is 25.

Ryan Griffin is considered the favorite to be the Saints' No. 2 quarterback.

He's competing with veteran Luke McCown. Griffin played much of the preseason opener against the Rams with Brees getting the night off. He completed 16-of-23 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown. Griffin (6-foot-5, 206) has good size, but an average arm. Drew Brees hasn't missed a game in nine seasons.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports second-year undrafted free agent Ryan Griffin is making a "serious push" to back up Drew Brees.

Griffin has only journeyman veteran Luke McCown to beat out, so it's not surprising. Griffin has been shining in pad-less practices, but will have to translate that to camp and preseason games to really put the heat on McCown.

Saints promoted QB Ryan Griffin from the practice squad.

An undrafted free agent out of Tulane, Griffin was waived at final cuts. His promotion is a sign quarterback-needy teams were showing interest, as the Saints obviously don't need a third quarterback behind Drew Brees or Luke McCown.

Saints waived QB Ryan Griffin.

A somewhat big-named UDFA signee out of Tulane, Griffin didn't show enough to put any heat on Luke McCown for the backup job behind Drew Brees.

Saints signed Tulane QB Ryan Griffin.

Griffin (6-foot-3 7/8, 221) is a weak-armed thrower with some moxie. Tough in the pocket, Griffin exhibited quality touch-passing ability in Tulane's up-tempo offense, completing 62.2 percent of his attempts as a senior with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He helped himself during the pre-draft phase by earning MVP honors in the Texas vs. Nation all-star game. The Saints will try developing Griffin into a serviceable backup.

Tulane's Ryan Griffin has conducted more pre-draft workouts than any other quarterback in the draft.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen busted out the #sleeper hashtag for the Green Wave signal caller, who's met with the Jaguars, Eagles, Chargers and Steelers, presumably among others. A four-year starter at Tulane, Griffin stands in at 6-foot-4 and 221 pounds. He'll be a day-three pick.
