Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey confirmed LG Dallas Thomas and RG Billy Turner will open OTAs as Miami's starting guards.
Thomas played 695 snaps last season at left guard, right guard, and right tackle, and was arguably the league's worst offensive lineman on a per-snap basis. Turner, meanwhile, played all of 17 snaps as a rookie. The Dolphins used just one pick on an offensive lineman, taking OG Jamil Douglas in the fourth round. It would be a bigger concern if the Dolphins' offense hadn't functioned so well with Thomas and now-retired Daryn Colledge at guard last year. May 15 - 8:34 AM

Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are currently penciled in as the Dolphins' starting guards.

Mike Pouncey and Daryn Colledge were the Dolphins' starting right and left guards, respectively, last season, but Pouncey is moving back to center and Colledge is a free agent. The Dolphins also cut both Shelley Smith and Nate Garner. Thomas was one of the league's worst players across 695 snaps last season, while Turner played just 17 snaps as a third-round rookie.

Dolphins second-year RG Dallas Thomas has graded out as Pro Football Focus' worst offensive lineman by a wide margin through the first two weeks of the preseason.

Practically handed a starting job at the onset of training camp, Thomas has been destroyed both as a pass protector and run blocker across 57 snaps. Coach Joe Philbin now admits Thomas isn't locked in as a starter. Rookie Billy Turner and free-agent addition Shelley Smith will both be given a shot.

The Dolphins are giving second-year OL Dallas Thomas the first crack at their starting right guard job.

Daryn Colledge is the left guard with Shelley Smith at center. Thomas struggled at right tackle as a rookie, but could prove more functional in tighter quarters. In 2012 at Tennessee, Thomas allowed zero sacks as the Volunteers' starting left tackle. The Fins need Thomas to improve his run blocking.

Dallas Thomas has been getting the majority of the first-team reps at left guard at Dolphins OTAs.

Thomas played just three offensive snaps as a rookie last season and pointed to the struggle of learning multiple positions and his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery as things that held him back. Third-round rookie Billy Turner is also in the mix at left guard. Thomas was the 77th overall pick last year.

Dallas Thomas was running as the first-team left guard when the Dolphins opened OTAs on Tuesday.

Thomas, last year's 77th overall pick, seems to have been a bit of a forgotten man in Miami this offseason. He underwent shoulder surgery last spring and played just two snaps as a rookie. Thomas will compete with rookie Billy Turner, veteran Nate Garner, and second-year UDFA Sam Brenner for the starting job.

Dolphins signed third-round G/T Dallas Thomas to a four-year contract.

Recovering from significant shoulder surgery, Thomas did little at OTAs and will be behind the eight ball when training camp starts. If fully healed, Thomas could still make a run at a starting job. The Dolphins' offensive line is a team weakness and at least one of the guard positions will be up for grabs.

Dolphins third-round G/T Dallas Thomas (shoulder surgery) participated in position drills Monday at OTAs.

It was Thomas' first on-field work since getting drafted. He's penciled in as the top backup to left tackle Jonathan Martin and left guard Richie Incognito.

No. 77 overall pick OL Dallas Thomas (shoulder surgery) is expected to miss the Dolphins' entire offseason program, but could be ready for training camp.

Thomas was given a 4-6 month timetable after tearing his labrum in January's Senior Bowl. It's the same injury No. 3 pick Dion Jordan is recovering from, though Jordan didn't go under the knife until February 26. Capable of playing both guard and tackle, Thomas will likely serve in a super-sub role as a rookie.

Dolphins selected Tennessee OL Dallas Thomas with the No. 77 overall pick.

Thomas (6-foot-5, 306) made 37 starts for the Vols, 25 at left tackle as a sophomore and junior, and 12 at left guard as a senior. In 2012, Thomas did not allow a single sack of Tyler Bray although he was penalty prone, getting flagged six times. Thomas has short arms (33 1/8") and is coming off surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. When healthy, he projects as a left guard or finesse right tackle. While Thomas is a long shot to start as a rookie, he'll be a quality reserve right away because he fits the zone-blocking scheme and can play multiple positions.
