Cowboys SS J.J. Wilcox suffered a neck "burner" in Week 10 against the Jaguars.
Wilcox underwent tests earlier this week, but "should be okay." He's started all 10 games this season, making 43 tackles and one interception. He hasn't made many plays, but is better than what the Cowboys got at safety last season. Wed, Nov 12, 2014 09:42:00 AM

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Drew Davison says "all signs point to" J.J. Wilcox opening the season as the starting free safety.

Barry Church will man the other safety spot. A third-round pick last year, Wilcox struggled early in his rookie season, eventually losing his starting job to Jeff Heath. An outstanding athlete, Wilcox has the playmaking upside Dallas' depleted defense is desperate for.

ESPN Dallas is "hearing good things" about J.J. Wilcox occupying the Cowboys' starting free safety spot this season.

"Good ball skills and a solid tackler," tweeted beat writer Calvin Watkins. VP Stephen Jones expressed similar optimism prior to the draft. Wilcox will compete with Jeff Heath, Matt Johnson, and Jakar Hamilton for the gig next to SS Barry Church. Wilcox was the 80th pick in last year's draft and is a tremendous athlete.

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones considers J.J. Wilcox the favorite for the starting safety job opposite Barry Church.

"My thoughts are that he’s really got a chance, if he goes back to playing like he had been in training camp and how he was playing toward the end of the year, to be the guy opposite Church," Jones said. A 2013 third-round pick, Wilcox lost his starting job to Jeff Heath in Week 8 and never regained it. There's currently no real competition for Wilcox on the roster outside of an injury-prone Matt Johnson, but the Cowboys could upgrade at safety in the early rounds of next week's draft.

Cowboys rookie FS J.J. Wilcox suffered a knee injury in Thursday's practice, and is in danger of missing Week 8.

According to, the team is "fearing" an MCL sprain, but that it appears Wilcox has avoided a season-ending injury. Either way, he can be all but ruled out for Week 8, leaving the Cowboys' pass defense even more under-manned. Undrafted rookie Jeff Heath will start if Wilcox can't go. It's a boost for Matthew Stafford and the Lions.

Third-round rookie J.J. Wilcox will start at free safety for the Cowboys against the Rams on Sunday.

Will Allen played all 132 snaps at free safety the first two weeks. According to Pro Football Focus, he's allowed seven catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns in his coverage. Wilcox is extremely raw and has played just six snaps this season. He can't be any worse than Allen. Jared Cook could be in for a monster day over the deep middle. Cook is our No. 6 tight end this week.

Cowboys signed No. 80 overall pick SS J.J. Wilcox to a four-year contract.

A running back and receiver for his first three years at small-school Georgia Southern, Wilcox has just one year of experience on defense. There was some initial thought he could compete for a starting job, but DBs coach Jerome Henderson has called him "light years" away from being an NFL contributor. In other words, it was another questionable pick by owner/GM Jerry Jones, and Wilcox will likely focus on special teams as a rookie.

Cowboys DBs coach Jerome Henderson admits third-round SS J.J. Wilcox is "light years" away from being an NFL contributor.

A previous report had Wilcox competing to start as a rookie, but winning a first-string job would be stunning. "Light years. Light years," Henderson said. "You have that coupled with the fact that the league he played in. He jumped into this league with only one year at the job." Wilcox was a defensive back for just one year at Georgia Southern. He's another Cowboys project.

Cowboys third-round S J.J. Wilcox will get a chance to compete for a starting job.

If the season started today, Barry Church, who tore his right Achilles' in September, and Matt Johnson, who missed all of last season because of hamstring injuries, would be the starters. Even if Wilcox doesn't earn the job in camp, the injury histories of Johnson and Church bode well for Wilcox's chances of cracking the starting lineup at some point in the 2013 season.

Cowboys selected Georgia Southern S J.J Wilcox with the No. 80 overall pick.

The Cowboys could have solidified their hole at safety in the first round, but reached for C Travis Frederick instead of Matt Elam. Now they settle for Wilcox, a 6-foot, 213-pounder that played tailback and slot receiver his first three seasons at Georgia Southern before converting to strong safety as a senior and intercepting two passes as a 13-game starter. He ran 4.57 at the Combine with a 35-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. Described as a "215-pound safety with corner feet" by NFL Network's Mike Mayock, Wilcox figures to open his career on special teams but could grow into a starter.
