Bengals signed FS Shawn Williams to a four-year extension through 2020.
A third-round pick in 2013, Williams has only started four games in three seasons, but his presence was a big factor in the decision to let Reggie Nelson walk. Williams is expected to open the season as the starter at free safety, and a big year likely would have earned him a hefty payday next spring. Cincinnati's decision to lock him up now could look like a savvy move this time next year. May 17 - 9:37 AM

Shawn Williams is expected to start at free safety in 2016.

The Bengals knew they had little chance of retaining both George Iloka and Reggie Nelson in free agency, so they re-signed the younger Iloka while letting Nelson walk. Williams recorded career-highs in both tackles (32) and interceptions (two) last season and should be the odds-on choice to replace Nelson at free safety. The 24-year-old is entering the last year of his rookie deal.

Bengals DC Paul Guenther expects "big things" from fourth-year S Shawn Williams and believes he's good enough to be a starter.

With both starting safeties George Iloka and Reggie Nelson free agents, it might be Williams' time to get the first crack at a starting job. Expect the Bengals to retain at least one of Nelson or Iloka, but it sounds like Williams is looking at an expanded role in 2016. Ideally, Williams would play in the box.

Bengals SS Shawn Williams is a candidate for an expanded role.

Williams had an impact on semi-regular snaps last year, recording 32 tackles and two interceptions. His presence could make free agent George Iloka expendable. With Iloka and Reggie Nelson's contracts up, Williams could start in 2016.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis believes Shawn Williams is ready for more playing time.

His path to playing time at safety has been blocked by veterans George Iloka and Reggie Nelson. That figures to change in 2015. The 31-year-old Nelson is in the final year of his contract and the Bengals need to see if Williams is the team's long-term solution at strong safety. Williams has seen just 39 combined snaps on defense since entering the league in 2013.

ESPN considers third-rounder Shawn Williams the front-runner for the Bengals' starting strong safety job.

Per Jamison Hensley, it's "apparent" that Williams has "more of a feel for that position" than Taylor Mays. Williams' is really competing against George Iloka and Jeromy Miles, but his in-the-box prowess should allow him to win out. He's a nice complement to coverage specialist Reggie Nelson.

Bengals rookie S Shawn Williams is in competition to start opposite Reggie Nelson.

The Bengals have been impressed with Williams' grasp of the playbook so far, and reportedly love his physical nature. Last year's pick, George Iloka is having a good summer, but projects similarly to Nelson as a free safety. Williams brings more of an in-the-box skill set, which defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has successfully utilized in the past. Veteran Taylor Mays has proven to be nothing more than a role player.

Bengals signed No. 84 overall pick S Shawn Williams to a four-year contract.

An in-the-box specialist, Williams has 4.46 speed, but lacks fluidity and ball skills. Competing with Taylor Mays and 2012 fifth-rounder George Iloka to start opposite Reggie Nelson, Williams has a strong chance of getting on the field as a rookie. The Bengals' mauling defensive line should make life easier on Williams in coverage as he learns the NFL game.

The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy predicts that No. 84 overall pick S Shawn Williams will start next to Reggie Nelson as a rookie.

Williams will be competing with former second-round bust Taylor Mays and 2012 fifth-rounder George Iloka, so it shouldn't be hard to crack the lineup. Williams is solid in run-support, which would complement Nelson's coverage skills well.

Bengals selected Georgia S Shawn Williams with the No. 84 overall pick.

Williams (5-11, 213) made 30 starts for the Dawgs, playing strong safety across from FS Bacarri Rambo. Williams logged 10.5 tackles for loss, and four career picks. He is a run-support maven lacking fluidity and ball skills, but helped himself with a 4.46 forty at the Combine. Williams should have little trouble making an early impact on kickoff and punt coverage.
