Colts placed OG Hugh Thornton (foot) on injured reserve.
Thornton had lost his job to Denzelle Good, but this is a blow to the Colts' offensive line depth, which is thinning after LG Jack Mewhort suffered a knee injury in the third preseason game. Thornton was a third-round pick in 2013. Sep 3 - 1:26 PM

Colts OG Hugh Thornton is on the 53-man roster bubble.

Thornton was battling Denzelle Good to keep his starting job, but has missed most of camp after suffering a setback with his foot ailment. Injuries have been a recurring issue for the 2013 third-rounder, who was a liability when on the field last season.

Beat writer George Bremer of The Herald Bulletin believes the competition at right guard has been narrowed down to Hugh Thornton and Denzelle Good.

The Colts entered camp with at least four players vying for the starting job at right guard but it appears the field has already been whittled down to two with Thornton and Good emerging as the clear frontrunners. Thornton has started practice at right guard with Good finishing there each of the last three days. Good is transitioning from right tackle while Thornton started at right guard last season.

Colts RG Hugh Thornton will have to hold off at least three challengers for the starting job.

Right guard is the only spot on the Colts' line up for debate, and Thornton will face tough competition. His main rival is Denzelle Good, who is switching to guard after making four starts at right tackle as a rookie. Former starting C Jonotthan Harrison could also get a look, and fifth-round pick Joe Haeg saw some first-team reps during the offseason program.

Colts RG Hugh Thornton said he has cut his weight to 315 pounds.

Thornton has been listed as high as 336 pounds in his career. "The power is still there. The strength is still there. The endurance is still there," Thornton said. "I’m just lighter on my feet. I’m able to move around, block more, move my feet quicker and I think it will help with longevity." A third-round pick in 2013, Thornton has been a below-average starter who struggles to stay healthy. Perhaps shedding some extra pounds will help in both regards.

Colts placed RG Hugh Thornton on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

RB Michael Hill has been signed in a corresponding roster move. Thornton had made just one appearance since Week 12, and evidently wasn't going to get better any time in the next two weeks. A 2013 third-rounder, Thornton is a solid run blocker. Going on 24, and due just $595,000 next season, he'll be back with the Colts in 2015.

Colts RG Hugh Thornton is "week to week" with a sprained MCL.

Thornton excels as a run blocker, an area in which Indianapolis' offense was already struggling. The Colts will turn to Lance Louis at right guard.

Colts RG Hugh Thornton was benched for Monday night's win over the Giants.

Although Thornton has only been mediocre this season, the benching was apparently for disciplinary reasons -- not performance. He should be back in his normal starting right guard role after the bye. Lance Louis filled in Monday night.

Colts LG Hugh Thornton did not practice Wednesday and has a walking boot on his left foot.

The third-round rookie has started the past six games and played every snap last Sunday night. It's unclear when he was injured. Thornton has been obliterated in pass protection and Rams second-year DT Michael Brockers is up next. Brockers hasn't been getting to the quarterback but has certainly been a disruptive force on a stout St. Louis line. Joe Reitz is Thornton's backup.

The Colts are working third-round pick Hugh Thornton at right guard in rookie minicamp and will "let him develop" there.

If Thornton sticks at right guard for the rest of the summer, he has a very strong chance of beating out veteran Mike McGlynn. McGlynn started 15 games last season, and graded out as Pro Football Focus' worst-rated guard. McGlynn is best suited for a backup role. It sounds like Donald Thomas will play left guard.

Colts agreed to terms with No. 86 overall pick OG Hugh Thornton on a four-year contract.

Thornton (6-foot-3 1/4, 320) projects as a guard in the NFL, although he was the University of Illinois' starting left tackle as a senior. The 21-year-old brings a nastiness with him, and he could compete for a starting spot this summer.

Colts selected Illinois OG Hugh Thornton with the No. 86 overall pick.

Thornton (6-foot-3 1/4, 320) made 35 starts for the Illini, seeing time at both guard and tackle. He was Illinois' starting left tackle as a senior, although left guard will be Thornton's best NFL fit. He has 34 1/8-inch arms and ran 5.11 in Indy with 27 reps on the bench, so Thornton has athleticism, length, and strength -- and he plays nasty. Thornton's mother and sister were murdered in 2004 while he slept next door, and NFL scouts believe he takes out his internal anger on the field. Thornton could push Mike McGlynn for the right guard job.
