Chiefs second-year ILB Nico Johnson appears to be on the outside looking in at a 53-man roster spot.
Johnson was the 99th overall pick in last year's draft out of Alabama, but was active for just two games as a rookie. James-Michael Johnson is currently the top backup to starters Derrick Johnson and Joe Mays, while Josh Mauga is the No. 4 inside 'backer. Johnson needs to make his mark on special teams. The Chiefs aren't counting on second-year ILB Nico Johnson for the starting job next to Derrick Johnson.

A 2013 fourth-round pick, Johnson was active for just two games as a rookie. He's behind Joe Mays for snaps in the Chiefs' base defense and doesn't play in sub packages. Johnson will need a strong camp to beat out Mays and could be limited to a special teams role.

Chiefs signed fourth-round ILB Nico Johnson to a four-year contract.

Johnson is a two-down thumper on the inside, and he'll compete with veteran Akeem Jordan for the starting job next to Derrick Johnson. Johnson will also contribute immediately on special teams for the Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid anticipates fourth-round pick Nico Johnson pushing Akeem Jordan for a starting inside linebacker job.

The 99th overall pick, Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 248-pound thumper without cover skills. He'd be a two-down player. Jordan (6'1/230) is familiar with Reid from Philly, but Johnson has a big size advantage on him. Derrick Johnson remains the only Kansas City inside linebacker worth an extensive look in IDP leagues.

Chiefs selected Alabama LB Nico Johnson with the No. 99 overall pick.

Johnson (6-2, 248) was a two-down inside 'backer in Nick Saban's 3-4, exiting the field in all passing situations because he lacks cover skills. As a senior, he registered 55 tackles — two for a loss — and two forced fumbles. Johnson ran forty times of 4.73 and 4.77 at the 'Bama Pro Day, with a 30-inch vertical and 9-foot-2 broad jump. He was a special teams regular at Alabama, and should start out there in Kansas City.
