Steelers waived CB Terry Hawthorne and WR Justin Brown.

The No. 150 overall pick of April's draft, Hawthorne only recently resumed practicing. He'll be stashed on the practice squad if he clears waivers. A sixth-rounder, Brown caught just six passes in the preseason.

Steelers rookie CB Terry Hawthorne just recently resumed practicing after undergoing knee surgery in the spring.

He took a pretty long while to recover from a scope. Hawthorne is a fifth-round pick out of Illinois who needed to show special teams value to secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Those hopes have faded after so much missed practice time.

Steelers signed No. 150 overall pick CB Terry Hawthorne to a four-year contract.

At 6'0/195 with 4.44 wheels and an ability to hit, Hawthorne has the tools to contribute down the line. For now, he'll try to carve out a spot on special teams while backing up Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen and William Gay.

Steelers DBs coach Carnell Lake believes sixth-round CB Terry Hawthorne has "all the physical tools."

"What I like about Terry is that he has a lot of upside potential that I see in him," Lake said. "He is big. He is fast. He doesn't mind tackling, and he can play press coverage well, kind of in the same way as an Ike Taylor." The Steelers clearly believe Hawthorne has starting potential, but his biggest 2013 impact should come on special teams.

Steelers selected Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne with the No. 150 overall pick.

Hawthorne (5-foot-11 3/4, 195) started 26 games for the Illini, registering six interceptions, 12.5 tackles for loss, and two pick-sixes. He was highly regarded before a disappointing senior year, along with the rest of Illinois' defense. Hawthorne ran 4.44 at the Combine with a 35.5-inch vertical and is fluid in the hips, so the tools are there. Hawthorne is also not opposed to getting physical. It's an area of need for the Steelers with Ike Taylor entering his age-33 season and Keenan Lewis in New Orleans.
