Giants waived S Cooper Taylor.

A 2013 fifth-rounder, Taylor was in the running for a starting job this summer, but couldn't nail it down. He missed all of 2014 with a foot injury. It could be a minute before Cooper gets a second chance.

The Newark Star-Ledger considers Cooper Taylor the leading candidate for the starting free safety job.

Nat Berhe missed OTAs with a calf injury, leaving Taylor to work with the first team defense. Berhe will enter training camp behind Taylor, but remains the favorite to start. Rookie Landon Collins is locked in at strong safety.

Giants S Cooper Taylor played with the first team at OTAs on Wednesday.

Taylor got the majority of snaps at free safety with Nat Berhe (calf) sidelined. Taylor likely would have worked with the second team had Berhe been healthy. Berhe remains the favorite to start opposite rookie SS Landon Collins.

Giants GM Jerry Reese said S Cooper Taylor and S Nat Berhe will be given a shot to compete.

"They're gonna get a chance to compete," Reese said. "Cooper obviously needs to stay healthy, but I think both those guys will get a chance to compete for that position." Both recent fifth-round picks, Taylor and Berhe are the only safeties currently on the Giants' roster. Taylor, a 2013 pick, has only played ten games while dealing with hamstring, shoulder and foot injuries. Berhe only logged 32 snaps as a rookie. The Giants will be looking for better options.

Giants second-year S Cooper Taylor will undergo foot surgery and may miss the season.

Coach Tom Coughlin said injured reserve is a possibility. Taylor suffered the injury in the Giants' second preseason game, and it's believed to be to his sesamoid bone. It's the same bone MLB Jon Beason hurt. Taylor was competing for a hybrid linebacker-type role on defense, as a bigger safety at 6'4/228.

Giants S Cooper Taylor suffered a "significant" foot injury in New York's second preseason game.

Taylor has been competing for a linebacker-type role in the Giants' sub-packages. Coach Tom Coughlin called the injury "extensive," and clarified that it's to Taylor's sesamoid bone. No timetable has been given for his return.

Giants placed S/LB Cooper Taylor (hamstring, shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

They activated OL Eric Herman from the practice squad to fill Taylor's roster spot. A fifth-round pick out of Richmond, Taylor was a core special teamer as a rookie. He'll have a chance to compete for playing time on defense in 2014, likely as a linebacker-type player in dime sub-packages.

Giants agreed to terms with No. 152 overall pick S Cooper Taylor on a four-year, $2.34 million contract.

An imposing 6-foot-4, 228 pounds with 4.49 wheels, Taylor could also see time at weak-side linebacker. Coach Tom Coughlin expects Taylor to compete for time in the Giants' three-safety package, but the majority of his action should come on special teams.

Both GM Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin mentioned fifth-round pick Cooper Taylor as a candidate for the Giants' three-safety package in addition to playing special teams as a rookie.

Taylor goes 6-foot-4, 228 with 4.49 wheels. He was viewed as a linebacker prospect by some teams. "He is a safety by trade but you drop him down in that three-safety package or whatever you want to do," said Coughlin. "Whether he plays an outside backer or whatever." Taylor will have to earn the job in camp.

Giants selected Richmond S Cooper Taylor with the No. 152 overall pick.

Taylor attended the East-West Shrine game and opened some eyes due to his size and closing ability. The former Georgia tech Yellow Jacket is an interesting NFL prospect. We aren't sure if he fits as a weakside linebacker, in the box safety, or a combination of the two.
