Second-year edge player Stansly Maponga is working as a first-team outside linebacker at Falcons OTAs.
The Falcons are playing base 3-4, with Jonathan Massaquoi and 2013 fifth-rounder Maponga at OLB, Paul Worrilow and Joplo Bartu inside, and LE Tyson Jackson and RE Jonathan Babineaux flanking NT Paul Soliai on the line. Osi Umenyiora is a sub-package end. The Falcons lack a truly threatening pass rusher, which is why we don't expect much improvement from their defense. May 28 - 10:40 PM

Falcons fifth-round DE Stansly Maponga (foot) is "slated to be ready to go" for training camp.

Maponga battled the foot injury all last season at TCU, and he underwent surgery in March. Although it appears he'll be on the field when training camp opens, the Falcons could choose to limit him for the first couple weeks.

Falcons fifth-round DE Stansly Maponga underwent left foot surgery in March.

Maponga battled through the foot injury as a junior at TCU, recording just four sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss. As a healthy sophomore, he had nine sacks and 13.5 TFLs. Maponga is expected to be limited for at least the first two weeks of camp before getting into the mix. He's a long shot for year-one impact.

Falcons signed fifth-round DE Stansly Maponga to a four-year contract.

The latest mid- to late-round speed rusher stab by GM Thomas Dimitroff, Maponga will hope to pan out better than Lawrence Sidbury, Cliff Matthews, and Jonathan Massaquoi. Dimitroff did hit on one, stealing Kroy Biermann out of Montana in the 2009 fifth round. Maponga will initially compete for special teams snaps. He only registered four sacks as a TCU senior, playing hurt.

Falcons selected TCU DE Stansly Maponga with the No. 153 overall pick.

Maponga (6-foot-2, 256) looked like a rising star as a sophomore when he racked up 13.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and five forced fumbles. Playing through a foot injury that may still require surgery, Maponga's effectiveness dipped in 2012 (6.5 TFLs, four sacks) but he still declared for the draft. Maponga ran 4.84 at his Pro Day with a 29.5-inch vertical and 30 reps on the bench. He's an edge rusher with deceptive power. Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff loves taking late-round fliers on pass rushers, although to this point none of them have panned out. Maybe Maponga can change that.
