Caleb Sturgis appears to have a "little edge" over Cody Parkey for the Eagles' starting kicker job, according to CSN Philly's Dave Zangaro.
Parkey enjoyed a strong rookie year in 2014 but a groin injury limited him to just three games last season. Sturgis converted 18-of-22 field goals in his absence and it appears he'll open camp as the favorite for the starting job. "That's a great battle going on right there," said head coach Doug Pederson. "Not making any decisions today on that spot, but I like what I've seen out of both of them." Jun 12 - 9:42 AM

Eagles signed K Caleb Sturgis, formerly of the Dolphins.

Cody Parkey (groin) is headed to injured reserve. Sturgis has a big leg, but is just a 77.5 percent career field goal kicker. Typically 80 percent is considered the "acceptable" threshold. With the Eagles' offense off to a slow start, Sturgis isn't necessarily a plug-and-play replacement for Parkey.

Dolphins waived K Caleb Sturgis.

A 2013 fifth-round pick, Strugis lost out to undrafted rookie Andrew Franks. Sturgis made just 55-of-71 (77.5%) of his field goal attempts over the last two seasons, including a 20-of-33 (60.6%) mark from 40 yards or more.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis (quad) was a full participant for the start of training camp.

Sturgis suffered the left quad injury at a team-organized kickball event in late May or early June. After missing eight field goals last year, Sturgis is on the spot in training camp, facing competition from Andrew Franks.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis suffered his left quad injury in a "team-organized kickball event."

Sturgis is out for the remainder of OTAs, and questionable for training camp. Already in grave danger of getting cut, Sturgis will have no shot at keeping his job if he's not ready when the Dolphins report late next month.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis (quad) may not be ready for training camp.

NFL kickers need to stay healthy and make kicks or they'll be replaced. Sturgis has done neither, previously battling a groin issue and missing 16-of-71 field goals through two NFL seasons. Andrew Franks is currently the only other kicker on the Dolphins' roster, but they're expected to add a veteran shortly.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis is not participating in OTAs due to a quadriceps injury, and will miss the rest of the offseason program.

The severity of the injury, which is to Sturgis' plant leg, is currently being evaluated. Sturgis' grip on the starting job was already considered shaky after missing 16-of-71 field goals in his two NFL seasons.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis may be in danger of losing his job to futures signee Zach Hocker.

Taken in the fifth round of the 2013 draft during the final year of the Jeff Ireland regime, Sturgis has missed 16 of his 71 field goal attempts through two seasons. He's no better than a league-average kicker. Hocker was drafted in the seventh round by the Redskins last year and costs less money.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis (groin) says he's back to 100 percent.

Sturgis battled a nagging groin issue through much of camp and nearly lost his job to John Potter. He'll head into Week 1 with a short leash. As a rookie last year, Sturgis was a disappointing 26-of-34 (76.4 percent) on field goals.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis (groin) resumed kicking Tuesday.

Sturgis is in a rush to get back on the field as he tries to hang on to his job. The 2013 fifth-rounder was a disappointment as a rookie, going 26-of-34 (76.4 percent) on field goals. Fantasy owners should be aiming for safer options even if Sturgis gets his groin right.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis' roster spot is in danger as he battles a groin injury.

Sturgis — who also battled groin issues in camp last season — is facing heat from John Potter. Sturgis was 26-of-34 on field-goal attempts as a rookie, putting him below the desired 80 percent threshold.

The Palm Beach Post considers the Dolphins' kicker competition "over," with rookie Caleb Sturgis as the winner.

While pricey incumbent Dan Carpenter didn't attempt a kick in Friday's preseason game at Jacksonville, Sturgis went 2-of-2 on field goals, including a 58-yarder, and 3-of-3 on extra points. It's still not a fantasy-relevant situation.

Fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis has recovered from his groin injury and remains the front runner over Dan Carpenter.

Teams almost never draft kickers they don't intend on keeping. With Carpenter slated to make $2.675 million this season, Sturgis also makes a lot of financial sense. Carpenter's price tag is just too high for a kicker who missed at least five field goals in each of the last three seasons.

Dolphins rookie K Caleb Sturgis is sidelined with a groin injury.

Per the Miami Herald, incumbent Dan Carpenter has "pounced" on Sturgis' absence. Reporter Adam Beasley believes Carpenter was "at least even, if not ahead" in the competition even before Sturgis' injury. It's unusual for teams to use draft picks on kickers they don't intend to start, so Sturgis should still be the favorite provided he gets healthy soon.
