NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Packers DE Josh Boyd is dealing with torn ligaments in addition to a broken bone in his ankle, and could miss the rest of the season.

ESPN reports he needs surgery. Boyd is a rotational lineman who's probably headed to I.R. Mike Pennel will pick up the slack until Letroy Guion comes off suspension in Week 4.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Packers DE Josh Boyd broke a "small" bone in his ankle Sunday night.

Rapoport is not expecting a long-term absence, but Boyd is still looking at a multi-week injury. Mike Pennel played 20 snaps Sunday night with Boyd sidelined. The Packers will get Letroy Guion back from suspension soon.

Josh Boyd is now working as the Packers' starting nose tackle.

A 6-foot-3, 310-pound second-year lineman out of Mississippi State, Boyd's playing time grew over the course of his rookie season, and he had a number of strong run-blocking performances late in the year. Boyd has the potential to be an upgrade on B.J. Raji, a severely overrated player who is headed to I.R.

Coach Mike McCarthy thinks second-year DL Josh Boyd is capable of taking a "huge step" in 2014.

"I think Josh definitely has the flexibility," McCarthy said. "He's shown he can play the nose. He needs to take a huge step, and I think he'll be one of those players that does in his second year." Boyd, the 167th pick last April, played just 114 defensive snaps as a rookie. But with free agents B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett expected to move on, Boyd and Datone Jones will take on increased roles.

The Packers are giving fifth-round DL Josh Boyd a look at five-technique and nose tackle in their rookie minicamp.

The No. 167 overall pick, Boyd will spend his first year developing behind contract-year starters B.J. Raji and Ryan Pickett. The Packers plan to use Boyd at end in their base defense, and move him inside as a nickel pass rusher. It's a role that nearly every lineman is asked to do in Dom Capers' 3-4 scheme.

Packers signed fifth-round DT Josh Boyd to a four-year contract.

At 6-foot-3, 310, Boyd possesses size to play five technique or nose tackle in Green Bay's 3-4. Boyd will develop behind B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett, and first-round pick Datone Jones. Raji and Pickett are entering contract years.

Packers selected Mississippi State DL Josh Boyd with the No. 167 overall pick.

Boyd (6-foot-3, 310) was a 3 1/2-year starter for the Bulldogs, recording 33 tackles -- 2.5 for a loss -- and 1.5 sacks as a senior, also blocking one kick. He ran 5.14 at the Combine before pumping 32 reps on the bench. Boyd flashed penetrating, three-technique type ability in the SEC, but was an inconsistent performer and lacks explosive measurables. Along with Mike Daniels, Boyd is a penetrator who might win with hand use and leverage.
