Free agent S Josh Evans will work out for the Redskins.
The Redskins are looking to replace starting free safety DeAngelo Hall, who is out for the year with a torn ACL. Evans was cast aside during Jaguars' final cuts. He's started 37 games in his career, though he's better suited as a reserve than a full-time starter. Tue, Sep 27, 2016 12:11:00 PM

Jaguars waived S Josh Evans.

A 2013 sixth-rounder, Evans made 37 starts over the past three seasons, mainly in center field at free safety. The Jags are going with ex-Brown Tashaun Gipson this season. Evans has typically struggled, getting overexposed as a heavy-snap player. He'l hunt for reserve/special teams work.

Jaguars S Josh Evans exited Week 3 against the Patriots with a knee injury.

Evans was making the start in place of injured SS Johnathan Cyprien. Jacksonville will now turn to fourth-round rookie James Sample next to Sergio Brown.

Jaguars S Josh Evans underwent offseason shoulder surgery.

He's not taking part in OTAs, but is expected to be fine "in a couple weeks." Evans started 25-of-32 games his first two seasons. The former sixth-rounder out of Florida received poor marks across the board from PFF and is now working as a strict backup following the additions of Sergio Brown and James Sample.

Evans underwent a procedure to correct a bone spur on his foot May 20. He'll fall a nose behind Winston Guy in their battle for the starting free safety gig. Jaguars coaches have been talking up both players.

Josh Evans and Winston Guy are expected to compete for the Jaguars' starting free safety job.

Evans, a sixth-round pick in last year's draft, started 11 games as a rookie, notching 58 tackles and one pass breakup. He didn't show much of a nose for the ball. Guy was claimed off waivers from Seattle prior to Week 1 and appeared in 14 games, making two starts. He has plus size at 6-foot-1 and 218 pounds. Guy is a big hitter. The Jaguars talked up Evans following the season.

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell indicated the team is pleased with 2013 sixth-round FS Josh Evans returning as a 2014 starter.

Caldwell specifically said upgrading free safety will not be an offseason priority. Evans finished his rookie year with 58 tackles and no turnovers forced among 11 starts, grading out 78th among 86 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus' safety ratings. Fellow rookie SS Johnathan Cyprien graded 84th, but Jacksonville is betting on internal improvement for both in 2014.

Jaguars FS Josh Evans has been ruled out for Week 14.

Winston Guy will start Thursday's game against the Texans. A sixth-round rookie who's started 9-of-12 games this season, Evans is week to week. He has 12 days to heal up for Week 15.

Jaguars FS Josh Evans (shoulder) is "very questionable" for Thursday's game against the Texans.

The sixth-round rookie has started 9-of-12 games this season, grading out as a bottom-five safety in Pro Football Focus' ratings. Winston Guy will get the start if Evans can't go for Week 14.

Jaguars sixth-round S Josh Evans could push Dwight Lowery for the starting free safety job.

Lowery has 39 career starts, but GM Dave Caldwell has been high on Evans. The Jags reportedly had Evans just below No. 33 pick Johnathan Cyprien on their draft board. Jacksonville could save nearly $1 million in cap space by cutting Lowery, while at the same time grooming Evans to be their center-field safety of the future. It would be an interesting, moneyball-type maneuver.

Jaguars signed sixth-round S Josh Evans to a four-year contract.

The No. 169 overall pick, Evans bookended Ravens first-round S Matt Elam in the defensive backfield at Florida. He has extensive special teams experience, and that's likely where he'll see most of his action as a rookie.

The Jaguars claim they "really liked" sixth-round S Josh Evans and would have drafted him as early as the third round.

GM David Caldwell says Evans was the "next guy that we were really targeting" if the Jags missed out on 33rd pick Johnathan Cyprien, and the team would have taken Evans "in the third." This is the second time Caldwell has talked up Evans during the offseason. Cyprien and Evans could be Jacksonville's starting safeties of the future, with the former at strong and latter at free.

The Jaguars had sixth-round S Josh Evans rated "just below" No. 33 pick Johnathan Cyprien on their draft board.

GM Dave Caldwell believes the Jags got the "best two safeties in the draft." A 24-game starter in the SEC, Evans has fluid hips and solid range, but is unlikely to contribute outside of special teams as a rookie despite Caldwell's enthusiasm.

Jaguars selected Florida S Josh Evans with the No. 169 overall pick.

Evans (6-1, 207) was Matt Elam's bookend for the Gators, making 24 career starts and picking off five passes. A member of the UF track team early in his college career, Evans has fluid hips and the range to cover center field. He ran 4.58 at the Combine with a 10-foot-3 broad jump. Evans also has extensive special teams experience. That's where he'll contribute as a rookie.
