Though he believes his surgically repaired shoulder and knee would be healthy by training camp, free agent Chad Pennington is leaning toward retirement.
Pennington worked as a commentator for Fox's NFL coverage last year after tearing his ACL in an offseason basketball game. "It doesn't make sense for me to come back and try to play," said Pennington, concerned that a shoulder repaired four times can't stand up to the rigors of the NFL at age 36. "I don't want to look a coach in the eye and say, 'You can count on me,' and then I go out there and [something happens] to us like it did in 2010 and he can't count on my body." Free agent Chad Pennington will work as a commentator for Fox's NFL coverage this season.

Set to turn 35 on June 26, Pennington is not officially retiring, but is planning to take the entire 2011 season off as he rehabs from both shoulder and knee injuries. If he isn't convinced to put on a helmet this fall, it's likely we've seen the last of his playing days.

The National Football Post believes that the longer the lockout drags on, the more likely free agent Chad Pennington is to land a back-up job somewhere.

Had free agency started when it normally does, interest would have been extremely limited in Pennington following his April surgery to repair a torn ACL. If his knee heals on schedule, however, he's likely to be close to full health whenever the transactions freeze is finally lifted, leaving him in good shape to land a deal.

Free agent Chad Pennington has shed his crutches three weeks after ACL surgery.

Pennington said the April 7 surgery went well. It's expected to be a quick recovery because the tear was clean. Pennington would be a candidate for the PUP list if he ends up catching on with a team by the end of summer.

Dr. James Andrews informed Chad Pennington that he can get the free agent back on the field in four months because his left ACL injury was a "clear" tear.

"I don't know if they are being optimistic, but I'm working towards that," said Pennington. "All I'm doing is rehabbing my knee and shoulder. I haven't decided on anything and won't till I'm healthy." Pennington admits that it was "stupid" to play basketball for the first time in 10 years, leading to the injury.

Despite a torn ACL, free agent Chad Pennington reportedly hasn't ruled out playing football in 2011.

Pennington will have surgery Thursday morning. He can keep the hope alive, but Pennington isn't going to get signed when free agency starts, and would certainly be a poor bet for effectiveness even off the bench once he is recovered. The incredibly injury-prone 35-year-old has played his last NFL snap.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano had expressed an interest in adding Chad Pennington (torn ACL) to his coaching staff earlier this offseason.

Pennington wanted to give his playing career one more shot, planning to ramp up his throwing in the next month. The torn ACL could force him to reconsider, turning to coaching or broadcasting instead. Pennington has received high marks for his mentoring of Chad Henne the past few years.

He won't be ready for the start of the 2011 season, which makes it unlikely that he'll sign by the end of the summer. SI's Peter King suggests Pennington was on several teams' radars as a veteran bridge to a developmental QB.

The Miami Herald predicts that free agent Chad Pennington will not be back with the Dolphins in 2011.

"Been there. Done that," writes columnist Armando Salguero. Pennington will have a tough time finding any place to play going on age 35 and coming off his fourth throwing shoulder surgery. It's time for the Dolphins to aim higher.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland isn't ruling out re-signing free agent Chad Pennington.

Ireland won't make a firm decision on Pennington until he sees how the veteran progresses in rehab. There's no use committing now if the 34-year-old's shoulder doesn't bounce back from a fourth surgery.

The Nashville Tennessean's Jim Wyatt thinks free agent Chad Pennington could be an option for the Titans at quarterback.

Wyatt is speculating more than anything else here. Pennington has committed to attempting a comeback from a fourth shoulder operation, but admits he isn’t sure if his shoulder will recover enough to allow him to play. Kerry Collins, also a free agent, is a better option than Pennington at this point.

Impending free agent Chad Pennington has decided to attempt a comeback from a fourth shoulder operation this offseason.

"I'm going to make a run at it, and the reason I am is that I still have that fire inside," Pennington said. "I have to go out and see if my shoulder can respond. If it doesn't respond, I can live with that." Pennington worked with new Dolphins OC Brian Daboll as a Jets QB in 2007-08, and he spoke glowingly of the hire for Miami. Pennington had already made up his mind to give his career one last shot before the Daboll news. He's expected to meet with Dr. James Andrews in early February for a checkup.

Chad Pennington (shoulder surgery, injured reserve) puts the odds at 50-50 of him playing again.

``There's no doubt I can come back; I can come back,'' Pennington said. ``But I'm going to have to weigh if I'm going to be a liability or an asset." The 34-year-old will undergo a fourth shoulder surgery Friday, and given that he didn't have the best arm strength to begin with, you've got to wonder how effective he could be after another operation.

Promoted into the starting lineup prior to Week 10, Pennington wound up with two pass attempts after hitting his three-times surgically repaired throwing arm on LT Jake Long's back against the Titans. He's expected to need a fourth surgery, likely ending the 34-year-old's career. Pennington figures to announce his retirement this offseason. The 11-year veteran has accumulated a career record of 43-37, 102:64 TD-to-INT ratio, 7.2 YPA average, and 66.0 completion rate.

ESPN's Tom Graham confirms that Chad Pennington's right shoulder injury is season- and potentially career-threatening.

Graham doesn't give details, but a previous report indicated that Pennington may have a dislocated throwing shoulder. The 34-year-old will be placed on injured reserve today or tomorrow, with Patrick Ramsey signing off the street.
