Mychal Rivera caught two passes for three yards in Friday's preseason game against the Packers.
Rivera soaked up all the first-team snaps at tight end with David Ausberry (knee) sidelined. A poor blocker who can't run, there's nothing to see here. Rivera, who has four catches for 29 yards this preseason, will be a rotational player this season. Aug 23 - 12:03 AM

Date:

Mychal Rivera is running as the Raiders' No. 1 tight end in the absence of David Ausberry (knee surgery).

Ausberry is undergoing a "procedure" on Wednesday, and has yet to be assigned a return date. It opens the door for Rivera to seize starting duties. OC Greg Olson has labeled Rivera one of the "most improved" players in camp. Despite the opportunity, Rivera projects as little more than a low-end TE2. He's a poor blocker with sluggish 4.81 wheels to go along with a 6-foot-3, 245-pound frame.
Aug 5 - 11:16 PM

Second-year TE Mychal Rivera is working behind David Ausberry at Raiders OTAs.

Rivera posted a 38-407-4 receiving line as a rookie, although it was mostly because the Raiders had no one else at tight end. (Ausberry was injured.) The Raiders appear to be projecting Ausberry as a possible every-down tight end, with Rivera only being used situationally due to deficient blocking. Rivera goes 6'3/242 with 4.81 speed. We're not big on Rivera's long-term outlook.
Jun 4 - 8:39 PM

Raiders coach Dennis Allen says he views second-year TE Mychal Rivera as a "foundation piece" on offense.

Beat writer Scott Bair expects Oakland's interest in draft-eligible tight ends to be "minimal" after Rivera showed some signs of becoming a useful "move" tight end as a rookie. A 2013 sixth-round pick out of Tennessee, Rivera posted a 38-407-10.7-4 line. New Raiders QB Matt Schaub has a lengthy history of heavily targeting tight ends, though Rivera's long-range upside is capped by blocking deficiencies that will limit his snaps, and marginal 4.78 speed at 6'3/245.
May 4 - 2:16 PM

Mychal Rivera is expected to be the Raiders' starting tight end in 2014.

Rivera made just three "starts" as a sixth-round rookie, but appeared in all 16 games and played on 622-of-1070 snaps (58.1 percent). He surprisingly came on strong in the second half of the year, posting a 22/233/3 line across the final eight outings. Still, we wouldn't be high on Rivera as an undersized (6'3/245) tight end that doesn't bring much speed to the table (4.81 forty). He should face competition for the starting gig as the Raiders try to infuse talent across the board.

Mar 3 - 8:32 AM

Mychal Rivera caught two passes for 23 yards in Week 17 against the Broncos.

Rivera has been a solid receiving tight end for the Raiders this season, finishing with 38 catches, 407 yards, and four touchdowns. He doesn't have a defined role going into 2014, but will likely have to compete with David Ausberry and possibly a draft pick for a starting job.

Mychal Rivera caught two passes for 43 yards in Sunday's Week 16 loss to the Chargers.

He was targeted three times in the passing game. Rivera got open for a 37-yard catch downfield in the second quarter that set up a Darren McFadden one-yard touchdown. He's shown some decent ability as a move tight end for the Raiders this season, but is removed in all blocking situations. Rivera has 36 catches, 384 yards, and four touchdowns going into the final week of the regular season.

Mychal Rivera caught three passes for 30 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's Week 15 loss to the Chiefs.

Rivera flashed his playmaking ability by running up the seam and making an athletic catch for a 14-yard score in the third quarter. He now has touchdowns in back-to-back games and three in the last five weeks. However, Rivera hasn't topped 30 yards in the last month and would be a weak TE2 play at San Diego in Week 16.

Mychal Rivera had five catches for 21 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's Week 14 loss to the Jets.

Rivera caught a one-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal with under three minutes remaining in the game. He was targeted eight times by Matt McGloin, primarily as a check down. Rivera will be nothing more than a low-end TE2 for Week 15 against the Chiefs.

Mychal Rivera caught two balls for 30 yards in the Raiders' Thanksgiving Day loss to the Raiders.

The rookie tight end is essentially just a safety-valve option for Matt McGloin. Rivera has some long-term promise, but is a low-end TE2 in re-draft.

Raiders TE Mychal Rivera (concussion) is active for Week 13 against the Cowboys.

Rivera is just four days removed from getting concussed on a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit, but is somehow ready to go. He's a decent TE2 streaming option against the Cowboys' sieve-like defense. Inactive for the Raiders are WR Denarius Moore, WR Brice Butler, SS Tyvon Branch, OG Lamar Mady, OT Menelik Watson, DL Brian Sanford and DE Jason Hunter.

Mychal Rivera (concussion) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Cowboys.

Rivera was concussed last Sunday but made it through the league's protocol at an alarmingly fast rate. He's a low-end TE2 for fantasy purposes.
Wed, Nov 27, 2013 07:06:00 PM

Mychal Rivera (concussion) participated in Raiders practice for the second straight day Tuesday.

It's unclear how or why Rivera has been cleared to practice less than 48 hours after his scary concussion in Sunday's loss to the Titans, but he's apparently on track to start against the Cowboys. It would be the first time we could ever remember a player who got concussed on a Sunday playing on Thursday. Rivera will be a low-end TE2 if he's indeed active.

Mychal Rivera (concussion) has already been medically cleared.

Rivera says he needed less than 24 hours to go through the entire NFL protocols on concussions. It's the quickest we've ever heard of. The sixth-round rookie is a good bet for 3-6 targets against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
Tue, Nov 26, 2013 08:38:00 AM

Mychal Rivera has been diagnosed with a concussion.

Rivera got lit up by Titans S Michael Griffin during the second quarter of Sunday's loss, finishing with just one catch for 10 yards. Given the Raiders play on Thanksgiving, he'll almost certainly miss Week 13.
