The Patriots will not activate DT Chris Jones (calf surgery) from the reserve/PUP list, ending his season.
The Pats have depth at defensive tackle, and didn't want to subtract someone to add Jones. Jones is due a modest $675,000 next season, but there's no guarantee he's back in New England. Nov 24 - 5:25 PM

Patriots DL Chris Jones underwent offseason calf surgery.

Jones started 12 games next to NT Sealver Siliga and opposite DE Vince Wilfork last season. He received poor marks from PFF both for his run defense and pass-rush push. With Wilfork now gone, Jones should remain a part of the rotation up front on a line that also includes Dominique Easley and Alan Branch.

ESPN Boston considers second-year DT Chris Jones a sure-fire lock for the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Claimed off waivers in September, Jones started 11 games for New England as a rookie because of injuries. He finished with 54 tackles and six sacks, but graded out as Pro Football Focus' worst defensive tackle. Jones doesn't play the run well and ended up near the bottom of PFF's pass rush productivity rankings. Ideally, Jones would fill a backup role as an occasional penetrator.

The Patriots are high on second-year DT Chris Jones.

Jones, a sixth-round pick by the Texans last April, was claimed off waivers in September and thrust into a prominent role in New England due to injuries. He graded out as Pro Football Focus' worst defensive tackle among 69 qualifiers, receiving especially poor marks in run defense. The Patriots reportedly like his ability to push the pocket. Jones shouldn't play on early downs in 2014.

Texans agreed to terms with No. 198 overall pick DT Chris Jones on a four-year contract.

The 2012 MAC Defensive Player of the Year at Bowling Green, the Texans have projected Jones as an undersized nose tackle. At 6-foot-2 and "just" 302 pounds, Jones relies more on his hands and athleticism than brute strength. He has a relentless motor. He could see some sub-package snaps as a rookie.

The Texans are projecting sixth-round pick Chris Jones as an undersized nose tackle in their 3-4 defense.

Jones stands under 6-foot-2 and only weighs 302, but displays active hands and quickness off the snap to get leverage. Texans writer Lance Zierlein compares Jones' non-stop motor to Earl Mitchell's, who is Houston's current starting nose tackle. A highly productive interior penetrator in the MAC, Jones could contribute in sub-packages as a rookie and develop into more down the line.

Texans selected Bowling Green DT Chris Jones with the No. 198 overall pick.

Jones (6-foot-1 5/8, 302) was the 2012 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, finishing his senior season third in the nation in sacks (12.5) and seventh in tackles for loss (19.0). He forced six career fumbles. Built like a bowling ball with a stocky frame and short arms (32 3/4"), Jones wins with leverage and a relentless play style. He's a bit of a misfit for Houston's 3-4 on paper, but could help in sub-packages. The Texans love to play dime under Wade Phillips, and shoot gaps with multiple interior pass rushers.
