49ers declared QB Jamie Martin, LB Ahmad Brooks, C Cody Wallace, FB David Kirtman, OT Jonas Jennings, OL Kirk Barton, CB Marcus Hudson, and CB Reggie Smith inactive for Week 7 against the Giants.

Smith, a rookie, isn't good enough on special teams to have a spot on the game-day roster. Barton was just acquired off waivers. Manny Lawson is up.

49ers signed QB Jamie Martin.

Alex Smith will likely be placed on I.R. by the end of the day. Martin is 38 and noodle armed, but could leapfrog Shaun Hill on the depth chart very shortly. OC Mike Martz hasn't taken a liking to Hill and Martin knows the system.

The 49ers are expected to sign free agent Jamie Martin on Wednesday morning and place Alex Smith (shoulder) on season-ending injured reserve.

Tuesday was the last day Smith will ever be a member of San Francisco's roster, barring him taking a drastic and unlikely pay cut to stay around in 2009.

Martin knows coordinator Mike Martz's offense from their days in St. Louis. Smith could be placed on season-ending injured reserve early this week.

QB Jamie Martin completed 16-of-24 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 17 against Carolina.

Martin came in for QB Drew Brees midway through the first quarter and hooked up with WR Devery Henderson on a 65-yard bomb, but did little after that.

Martin has been dealing with a family issue. The other Saints backups have struggled in his absence. Martin is the favorite to backup Drew Brees, which should make Saints fan shudder.

Saints signed QB Jamie Martin to a two-year contract close to league minimum.

Guess they can't pretend they may draft a quarterback now. This signing comes on the heels of multiple reports that Drew Brees' shoulder recovery is not going well and he may not be ready for the season. Martin, who was out of the league at one point, garnered a surprising amount of interest as a free agent this year.

The Seahawks didn't make a contract offer to Jamie Martin following his team visit.

It looks like Martin will have to wait for Joey Harrington's situation to resolve itself and possible the NFL Draft to get a deal somewhere.

Jamie Martin will visit with the Seahawks Monday.

We don't understand the widespread interest in the 36-year-old. He wasn't even in the league for 2003 and most of 2004 before Mike Martz rescued him.

The Bengals will reportedly turn back to Jamie Martin if they can't land Joey Harrington.

We're surprised the organization is so willing to ruin their momentum by going cheap at backup quarterback during such a crucial season. Only Doug Johnson and Craig Krynzel are behind Carson Palmer, who may not be 100% until 2007.

Agent Tom Mills doesn't expect a deal to be reached soon. Maybe that will provide Cincy enough to time to realize that they could do better.

He was reportedly close to a deal with the club over a week ago but nothing materialized. The Bengals are keeping their standards low in their pursuit for insurance at quarterback.
