Bills coach Rex Ryan has been impressed by reserve ILB Ty Powell's performance at OTAs.

Powell has reeled in four interceptions and seems to have found a home at inside linebacker. The 27-year-old saw 46 snaps last season, all at outside linebacker. The Bills have since switched from a 4-3 to Ryan's 3-4 scheme. Powell is trying to secure a backup role behind Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown.

Ty Powell is currently penciled in as the Bills’ primary backup at inside linebacker.

"Powell's been the most impressive," coach Rex Ryan said. "I think he's really jumped up. To me, that would be the guy." Limited to special teams last year, Powell is competing with Randell Johnson and sixth-round LB Tony Steward for backup duties.

ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak lists LB Ty Powell on the roster bubble.

Powell's roster chances were increased by Kiko Alonso's season-ending knee injury, but his spot should be safe regardless. Rodak puts Powell's odds of making the team at 75 percent. Powell is a candidate for a role as a cover linebacker in sub packages.

Bills LB Ty Powell is working at middle linebacker during offseason workouts.

With Kiko Alonso moving to weak-side linebacker, the Bills are considering using Powell in a rotation with Brandon Spikes at the MIKE spot. A former defensive back, Powell will get an extended look as a cover linebacker in sub-packages. Keith Rivers was also signed this offseason and should see snaps behind Spikes and Manny Lawson.

Bills GM Doug Whaley mentioned second-year LB Ty Powell as a candidate for the starting middle linebacker spot.

Powell was a seventh-round pick by the Seahawks last April. He couldn't crack Seattle's loaded roster and appeared in five games for the Bills as a rookie. Kiko Alonso is moving to weak-side linebacker in 2014. Powell is a big-time athlete and former defensive back. The Bills will have tryouts at the MIKE spot.

Bills promoted LB Ty Powell and CB Brandon Smith from the practice squad.

CB Johnny Adams and LB Marcus Dowtin were waived in corresponding roster moves. It's just some end of roster churning that won't have an effect outside of special teams. Powell was the No. 231 pick of April's draft, but couldn't make the Seahawks out of camp.

Seahawks agreed to terms with No. 231 overall pick DE/LB Ty Powell on a four-year, $2.209 million contract.

A 6-foot-2, 249-pound former defensive back, Powell has 4.64 wheels and blocked four kicks as a senior. That could translate to a regular role on special teams as a rookie, though he'll have to show well in camp to crack the Seahawks' loaded roster. The club has stated Powell is viewed as a long-term candidate to play the "Leo" hybrid position in Pete Carroll's defense.

Seahawks selected Harding DE Ty Powell with the No. 231 overall pick.

Powell (6-foot-2 1/8, 249) played defensive back early in his college career before moving into a full-time pass-rushing role. He notched 15 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks as a senior, also blocking four kicks. Powell demonstrated terrific speed at the Combine with a 4.64 forty and 1.59 ten-yard split. He may have a future in the league as a nickel rusher and special teamer in Seattle.
