It's a surprise in that Barrington was competing for a starting job. He was beaten out by Jake Ryan for the inside linebacker spot next to fourth-round rookie Blake Martinez. The Packers' defense will be soft in the middle this year.

It's the second time in three years the 2013 seventh rounder has ended up on injured reserve. A hamstring issue ended his rookie season. Barrington is an ordinary run defender, but his loss thins the Packers' questionable linebacker depth. Nate Palmer will slide into Barrington's starting spot. Barrington turns 25 next month.

Packers ILB Sam Barrington (ankle) was spotted on crutches and in a walking boot following the Packers' Week 1 win over the Bears.

Barrington entered the game with an ankle injury and apparently aggravated it early in the game. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel speculates Barrington will be out "awhile." Nate Palmer played in Barrington's place. The Packers' defense was gashed by Matt Forte with Barrington and S Morgan Burnett (calf) sidelined. Green Bay gets Seattle next week.

With ILBs Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk gone, it leaves Barrington atop the depth chart. He started nine games last season, including the final seven, receiving positive marks for his coverage from Pro Football Focus, but struggling badly against the run. Green Bay figures to address the position in the draft.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports the Packers "like the prospects" of second-year ILB Sam Barrington.

Barrington was the 232nd overall pick in last April's draft and played just one snap on defense before landing on injured reserve with a hamstring injury in November. We can't see the Packers liking him enough to start, however. He ran a 4.91 at the Combine and is just 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds.

Barrington (6-foot 7/8, 246) made 36 starts at outside linebacker in the Bulls' 4-3, registering 21.5 career tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, one interception, and five forced fumbles. He ran 4.91 at the Combine with a 1.67 ten-yard split and 22 bench-press reps. He will likely play an inside linebacker spot and add depth to that position for the Packers.
