Falcons re-signed S Kemal Ishmael on a one-year, $2.5-million contract.
A seventh-round pick in 2013, Ishmael started 10 games as a sophomore, but he has taken on more of a reserve role the last two seasons. He can do a job on special teams, however, and is good depth behind Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal. Mar 13 - 10:04 PM

Falcons placed S Kemal Ishmael on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Ishmael hurt his shoulder in Sunday's win over the Rams and has already undergone surgery. He'll finish the year with 52 tackles over 13 appearances. Rookie wide receiver J.D. McKissic was promoted from the practice squad in the corresponding roster move. Ishmael will be a free agent this offseason.

New Falcons coach Dan Quinn mentioned Kemal Ishmael first when discussing the team's free safety opening.

Dezmen Southward wasn't mentioned at all and appears ticketed for cornerback in Quinn's Cover 3/press system. Ishmael struggled at free safety last year, but looks like the favorite to start in Week 1. Quinn also mentioned Charles Godfrey and converted CB Ricardo Allen as in the mix at free safety.

Falcons signed seventh-round S Kemal Ishmael to a four-year contract.

Ishmael (5-foot-11, 206) produced on the field at Central Florida, but he isn't a great athlete. At the Knights' Pro Day, he ran a 4.63 forty, posted a 35 1/2" vertical, and did 21 bench press reps. Ishmael will compete for a special teams or practice squad role this season.
