49ers waived/injured OT Luke Marquardt.
An undrafted free agent last season, Marquardt reportedly re-fractured the same foot that sidelined him his senior year in college and his rookie season in the NFL. He had been participating fully in the 49ers offseason program, and there were even rumblings San Francisco saw Marquardt as their swing-tackle of the future. At 6-foot-8, 317, Marquardt has a ton of upside, but he will have to prove his health to make a mark in the league. He'll spend 2014 on I.R. Sat, May 24, 2014 11:26:00 AM

The 49ers are expected to give second-year OT Luke Marquardt a chance to be their swing tackle of the future.

Quips beat writer Matt Barrows of the 2013 undrafted free agent, "My goodness, Marquardt is a striking figure. If I were filming a Viking battle scene, he'd be the first guy off the gangway when the invaders' ship arrives at the beach." Marquardt stands 6-foot-8, 317. He missed his rookie year with a foot injury. Marquardt has been healthy since November and offers long-term upside.

49ers signed Azusa Pacific OT Luke Marquardt.

Marquardt (6-foot-8, 317) converted from tight end to become a two-year starter at left tackle before missing entire senior year with a hairline foot fracture. At Combine weigh-ins, Marquardt drew comparisons to Ivan Drago among NFL scouts, and Sebastian Vollmer for his on-field ability. He has ideal arm length (34 1/2") and performed an impressive 31 reps on the bench. Marquardt is making a huge jump in competition, but he's an intriguing prospect with left tackle-caliber movement skills. Marquardt underwent another foot surgery on April 18 and is questionable for training camp. An obvious project, he'll have a tough time cracking the 49ers' loaded roster.
