Patriots signed second-year S Dax Swanson and Utah DL L.T. Tuipulotu, and released WR Greg Orton and S Jeremy Deering.
Signed by Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 draft, Swanson spent time on both the Colts' and 49ers' practice squads in 2013. Swanson does not have elite measurables, but he showed some ball-hawking skills while at Sam Houston State. He will try to establish himself as a special teams player in New England. Colts signed Sam Houston State DB Dax Swanson.

Swanson (5-foot-10, 186) is a favorite of CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler, who pegged him as a pre-draft sleeper. He set Sam Houston's school record for career interceptions (14) and picked off Johnny Manziel as a senior. Lacking strong measurables, smallish Swanson has short arms (30 3/8") and ran 4.56 in Indy. He still offers some potential as a poor man's Earl Thomas. Swanson will try to carve out a role on special teams with the Colts.
