Texans waived RB Dennis Johnson.
Several draftniks were high on Johnson when he came out of Arkansas last year, but it hasn't worked out. He appeared in eight games for Houston as a rookie, rushing for 183 yards on 49 carries (3.7 YPC) and catching eight balls for 46 yards. Johnson is undersized at 5'7/193. He has 4.48 wheels but projects as a scatback at best who can also help out on returns. Mon, Aug 11, 2014 08:01:00 PM

Dennis Johnson (hip) is inactive for Week 17 against the Titans.

Jonathan Grimes will start at running back for the Texans. Ray Graham and Chad Spann will serve as his backups. Grimes isn't a recommended fantasy plug-and-play for owners playing through Week 17.

Dennis Johnson (hip) is listed as questionable for Week 17 versus Tennessee.

Johnson didn't practice at all this week. Rookies that don't participate during the week rarely play on Sundays. Jonathan Grimes is going to get the start for the Texans. Ray Graham will back him up. Grimes is only a flex option.

Dennis Johnson (hip) remained out of Texans practice Thursday.

Johnson will likely sit out against the Titans, leaving Ray Graham to back up Jonathan Grimes. It's a ridiculous situation for a team that's cycled through an alarming amount of running backs this season. An undrafted rookie, there's no guarantee Johnson will be back in Houston in 2014.

Texans RB Dennis Johnson is questionable for Week 17 with a hip injury.

Johnson is "questionable" enough that the Texans have already named second-year pro Jonathan Grimes their Week 17 starter. It appears quite likely that Johnson will sit. The ailment limited Johnson to just three second-half touches in Sunday's loss to the Broncos.

Interim coach Wade Phillips suggested injury was the reason Dennis Johnson got just three second-half touches in the Texans' Week 16 loss to Denver.

Johnson touched the ball nine times in the first half. "We lost two running backs, too," Phillips said. "That hurt because we had the first two (Arian Foster and Ben Tate) already out." Johnson blew his big chance to start by rushing 12 times for just 29 yards.

Dennis Johnson rushed 12 times for 29 yards and caught two passes for one yard in the Texans' Week 16 loss to the Broncos.

Johnson was such a dud after getting the start that the Texans benched him in the second half for Deji Karim. Although Johnson has a decent amount of talent, he's not big enough to break many tackles, and leaves too many yards on the field on inside runs. He'll likely be a committee back with Karim in the season finale against Tennessee.

The Broncos' defense has allowed 432 yards and five touchdowns on 91 carries (4.75 YPC) to Kansas City, San Diego, and Tennessee over the past three weeks.

Denver's run-defense collapse has coincided with LE Derek Wolfe's (illness) three-week absence. Wolfe has been ruled out for Week 16. With Ben Tate (ribs) shut down for the season, UDFA Dennis Johnson will be Houston's starting tailback Sunday versus the Broncos. Dennis Johnson will start at running back for the Texans this week versus Denver.

Ben Tate (ribs) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. Johnson will handle the bulk of the work, and Deji Karim is the new No. 2. Jonathan Grimes was signed earlier in the morning to fill the No. 3 role. The Broncos have allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season. Look for Denver to blow Houston out, forcing the Texans to pass for much of the afternoon. Johnson could see a lot of targets out of the backfield. He needs to be owned in 14-team leagues as player who should dominate touches.
Wed, Dec 18, 2013 02:24:00 PM

Dennis Johnson rushed four times for 12 yards in Houston's Week 15 loss to the Colts, adding a three-yard reception.

Johnson's Week 12 takeover of the Texans' backfield is a long-forgotten memory. There's no reason to own Ben Tate's handcuff for Week 16.
Sun, Dec 15, 2013 04:59:00 PM

Dennis Johnson rushed three times for 10 yards in Houston's Week 14 loss to the Jaguars, adding one catch for four yards.

For the second consecutive week, Johnson operated as a pure handcuff to Ben Tate. He notched only one second-half touch as the Texans went pass heavy. Unless you're a nervous Tate owner, Johnson is shaping up as a wasted roster spot for the fantasy playoffs.
Fri, Dec 6, 2013 12:45:00 AM

Dennis Johnson rushed just three times for 13 yards in Houston's Week 13 loss to the Patriots, adding one catch for 11 yards.

Johnson supplanted Ben Tate in Week 12, but Tate's benching lasted all of one week. Zero of Johnson's touches came during a tight second half. Johnson is worth keeping around as a handcuff for the fantasy playoffs, but his RB3 window has come and gone.
Sun, Dec 1, 2013 04:34:00 PM

Coach Gary Kubiak said he stuck with Dennis Johnson in Sunday's loss to the Jags because "when he went in he just looked so good running the ball."

Kubiak planned to just spell Ben Tate with Johnson, but that plan went out the window as Tate managed a mere one yard on seven carries. Johnson ended up with 13 carries for 74 yards. Tate will start next week's game against the Patriots, but we can no longer assume he'll be a workhorse. Johnson has earned a committee type role. Both backs will be weak fantasy plays in a game the Texans project to be trailing in.

Dennis Johnson rushed 13 times for 74 yards in Houston's Week 12 loss to the Jaguars, adding two catches for an additional 13 yards.

Johnson took over for an ineffective Ben Tate midway through the second quarter, giving the Texans a rushing spark as he out-touched Tate 13-5 over the game's final 35 minutes. Johnson gained 29 of his yards on one second-quarter carry, but managed five or more yards on three other totes. It was not an electrifying effort, but certainly one that should earn him a bigger workload in Week 13 against the Patriots. We doubt Tate will be out-right benched, but Johnson is officially on the FLEX radar.

Dennis Johnson rushed two times for two yards in Sunday's Week 11 loss to the Raiders.

Johnson got the call on a 3rd-and-short in the first half and couldn't break an arm tackle to get the first down. From there, he barely played. With Ben Tate playing through his broken ribs without much issue, Johnson is just a weak handcuff right now.
