Josh Hill caught one pass for five yards in the Saints' third preseason game.
Playing behind Ben Watson but still working with the ones, Hill was targeted on an end-zone pass at the end of the Saints' opening drive, but the ball was thrown widely by Drew Brees. Hill continues to have all the appearances of a sub-package tight end and red-zone weapon, while Watson operates as New Orleans' every-down tight end. Through three preseason games, Hill has six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Aug 30 - 6:40 PM

Josh Hill caught three passes for 40 yards in the Saints' preseason opener against the Ravens.

Hill played with the Ryan Griffin group, or the second-teamers. Although he has had a quiet camp, Hill took over in a two-minute drill toward the end of the first half, securing three Griffin passes for 40 yards on that lone drive. Hill's role in the Saints' offense has been downplayed by pretty much everyone covering the team, but he's still an intriguing flyer to monitor.

Josh Hill has been sidelined for the past week of Saints camp with an undisclosed injury.

Hill's early-offseason hype train has hit the brakes considerably since teams hit the field. And missing the start of camp is doing him no favors, as veteran Ben Watson gobbles up all the first-team reps while at times "dominating" in red-zone drills. Hill is dressed for Friday's practice, but will be "limited."
Aug 7 - 9:23 AM

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett threw "cold water" on Josh Hill's "fantasy buzz" Wednesday, saying Hill won't be playing the old "Jimmy Graham role."

Coach Sean Payton has professed his love for Hill numerous times this offseason, but Triplett believes that's because Hill is simply a good football player with the ability to run, catch, block and contribute on special teams. He notes that before Graham was a Saint, Payton didn't feature the tight end as much. Triplett mentioned Jeremy Shockey's 48-569-3 receiving line in 2009 as "realistic" for Hill. The truth is much of Hill's past success came because he was left wide open.

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett expects the team to utilize a "committee" approach to replacing Jimmy Graham.

Triplett continues to throw cold water on the notion of a breakout season for Josh Hill, which may be supported by the Saints' standing contract offer to Jermaine Gresham. Beyond Brandin Cooks and C.J. Spiller, Triplett foresees Drew Brees "spread(ing) it around to the open man," and perhaps leaning on Marques Colston to play the biggest role in replacing Graham's red-zone presence. 25-year-old Hill is an upside TE2 pick, but not a bankable TE1.
Jul 19 - 12:21 PM

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett does not see a "major breakthrough" happening for third-year TE Josh Hill.

Triplett notes that 34-year-old blocker Ben Watson "might have led the Saints in catches during the OTA and minicamp practices that were open to the media," and may actually be a superior 2015 fantasy option to Hill. Coach Sean Payton recently suggested Hill's playing time will be limited to the "sub" offense, which would indicate Hill is not going to become a full-time player this season.
Jun 21 - 4:12 PM

Coach Sean Payton reiterated that Josh Hill's playing time is set to increase.

Payton clearly likes Hill, but even he is tapping the breaks a bit. When asked how much Hill's snap count will rise, Payton said, "It just depends on how much two tight end sets we’re in, how much sub (packages). I couldn’t say specifically that he is going to have 25 percent more playing time but certainly his playing time will increase. ... A lot of it will be by game plan and what we are trying to do." We still like Hill as an 11th- or 12th-round upside pick thanks to athletic ability and opportunity, but a Jimmy Graham-like eruption isn't happening.
Jun 16 - 9:56 AM

The Saints put in a waiver claim for TE Tim Wright.

The Saints don't want to be done at the tight end position. They've been linked to free agent Jermaine Gresham for a couple months and were among the 10 teams that bid on Wright (the Bucs landed him with the top waiver priority). Josh Hill's "F" role could have at least been threatened by Wright. Hill remains an upside pick in the 11th or 12th round of fantasy drafts, but beat writers have warned not to expect him to truly fill the Jimmy Graham role.
Jun 15 - 11:24 AM

Coach Sean Payton confirmed TE Josh Hill will play the Jimmy Graham role in the Saints' offense.

Payton made it clear Hill's snaps will "certainly" increase. After not drafting a tight end, the Saints are committed to Hill as Graham’s successor. Hill will get the majority of his snaps detached from the line at "F," with Ben Watson returning in his usual "Y" role. Hill managed five touchdowns on limited targets last year and remains a candidate for a major step forward.
May 30 - 3:29 PM

The Saints did not select a tight end in the 2015 NFL draft.

If the Josh Hill hype machine wasn't in fifth gear before, it should be now. The 6-foot-5 third-year man with impressive Pro Day measureables is set for a massive boost in role following the trade of Jimmy Graham. The Saints, especially offensive schemer Sean Payton, haven't stopped raving about this kid since the season ended.
May 3 - 10:58 AM

Saints coach Sean Payton emphasized his "love" for third-year TE Josh Hill on Wednesday.

"This Josh Hill is another player that I love. I love," Payton said. "When you look at his runs, jumps, height, weight, speed, you look at his measurables — and he didn’t go to the Combine, thank God." Payton went on to say he believed Hill would be perceived much differently around the league had he not been an undrafted free agent. Hill is the kind of player whose fantasy hype train could spiral out of control, but he's definitely a candidate for a major step forward in 2015.
Mar 26 - 1:22 PM

Coach Sean Payton said third-year TE Josh Hill is a player "we value a lot."

Speaking Wednesday, Payton talked up both Hill and veteran TE Ben Watson as players whose roles are going to expand with Jimmy Graham out of the picture. Hill's ADP is skyrocketing by the day, as he's proven to be a touchdown-scorer in very limited opportunities during his first two seasons. He has TE1 upside, but is also a candidate to be overdrafted by the end of summer.
Mar 25 - 11:09 AM

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett expects the team to use a committee approach to replace Jimmy Graham at tight end.

Josh Hill sits atop the depth chart as a young riser at the position, but steady veteran Ben Watson will also be a big part of the offense. Former Bengals third-rounder Orson Charles was also signed after the season. The Saints remain a prime candidate to select a tight end in next month's draft and could be a landing spot for Maxx Williams with the No. 31 overall pick they acquired from Seattle.
Mar 20 - 8:56 AM

Saints coach Sean Payton gushed over rising third-year TE Josh Hill at his season-ending press conference, calling Hill "exactly what we're looking for."

The starting tight end job in New Orleans is Hill's to lose following Jimmy Graham's departure. Hill led the Saints in 2014 special teams tackles and has six touchdown catches on 30 career targets. "He's exactly what we're looking for," said Payton with a wide grin, several months before the Graham trade. "Each week you know exactly what you're gonna get. He's talented, he can run, he's young. He's consistent. Those are things that allow you to win." Payton also discussed Hill's eye-opening Pro Day measurables. If your Dynasty league has open offseason waivers, stop what you're doing and pick Hill up.
Mar 15 - 7:24 PM

Josh Hill wasn't targeted in the Saints' Week 17 win over the Bucs.

A second-year undrafted free agent out of Idaho State, Hill closes the book on his sophomore campaign the owner of a 14/176/5 line. He should have a roster spot for 2015.
