Benny Cunningham rushed for 15 yards on six carries in the Rams' Week 2 win over the Bucs.
Cunningham was the clear No. 2 to Zac Stacy, mostly working in on third downs. He got one series, but did nothing with it. Cunningham is merely Stacy's handcuff. Stacy is going to carry the rock 18-22 times per week. Sep 14 - 8:45 PM

Benny Cunningham rushed for 21 yards on five carries in the Rams' Week 1 loss to the Vikings.

Cunningham played behind Zac Stacy on early downs, but saw mostly all of the third-down work. He caught all four of his targets for 30 yards. Though Stacy still has a grip on lead-back duties, Cunningham got one series to himself in the first half before getting another late in the fourth quarter of the 34-6 blowout loss. Cunningham isn't start-able in 12- and 14-team leagues at the moment, and is mainly just Stacy's handcuff for fantasy purposes.
Sep 7 - 5:29 PM

Benny Cunningham is listed as the No. 1 kickoff returner and No. 2 running back on the Rams' updated depth chart.

The new depth chart was released Tuesday. Zac Stacy remains atop the tailback pecking order, while Cunningham will work in as a breather back and focus on special teams. Cunningham and Chris Givens will line up deep on kickoffs.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says that "if Benny Cunningham isn't challenging Zac Stacy for the starting job, he's certainly pushing him for playing time."

Beat man Jim Thomas says Cunningham has been the best Rams running back this preseason, echoing similar statements from ESPN's Nick Wagoner. This comes on the heels of Stacy playing off the bench behind Cunningham in the third preseason game. While we fully expect Stacy to hold the starting job and be the main back, he can't afford to lose too much volume. He averaged just 3.89 yards per carry and 5.42 yards per reception last year. Cunningham is worth a late-round flier until the uncertainty here shakes out.
Aug 28 - 11:36 AM

Benny Cunningham made a surprise start in Saturday's regular-season dress rehearsal against the Browns, rushing five times for 32 yards.

He caught one pass for six yards. Zac Stacy checked in on the Rams' second series, but Cunningham out-touched him 6-5. As has been the case all preseason, Cunningham was more productive than Stacy, out-gaining him 38-11. For the month of August, Cunningham now has 15 carries for 80 yards (5.3 YPC) to Stacy's 15-39-2.6. Stacy should still open the season as the Rams' starter, but Cunningham is his clear backup, and perhaps not terribly far behind on the depth chart. Beat man Nick Wagoner says Cunningham has been "sharper" than Stacy throughout camp and preseason.
Aug 23 - 10:44 PM

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner suggests second-year RB Benny Cunningham "could play a more integral role" in St. Louis' offense this season.

Cunningham topped 5.0 YPC as a rookie and can pass protect, solidifying him as the clear-cut backup to Zac Stacy, ahead of raw third-rounder Tre Mason. While we don't see Cunningham as a serious threat to Stacy's carries, this is a reminder that he's the preferred handcuff over Mason at this stage of August.

Aug 14 - 11:29 AM

Benny Cunningham rushed for 24 yards on five carries in Friday's preseason opener against the Saints.

Cunningham entered the game as the second running back in the rotation behind clear-cut starter Zac Stacy. Cunningham had a long run of 19 yards where he broke off a spin move, setting up Stedman Bailey's 24-yard touchdown. Rookie Tre Mason is a distant third on the depth chart. Cunningham and Mason would likely form some sort of one-two punch if Stacy were to get hurt.
Aug 8 - 10:30 PM

Early in training camp, Benny Cunningham has "held on firmly to the primary backup role" at running back for St. Louis.

Cunningham's style is most similar to Zac Stacy -- and he has a year under his belt in OC Brian Schottenheimer's system -- so it's no surprise Cunningham has held off Tre Mason thus far. We wouldn't be surprised if Mason settled in as the Rams' No. 3 back for the entire season. Cunningham averaged 5.6 YPC last year, and St. Louis would likely go RBBC if Stacy missed any time.
Aug 1 - 3:30 PM

Benny Cunningham is getting reps with the starters ahead of Tre Mason Sunday.

As a rookie with very little pass protection experience, Mason isn't going to be handed the No. 2 job behind Zac Stacy. Cunningham led the NFL in YPC (5.55) among rushers with at least 45 attempts last season. For now, speculation that Mason could earn 8-10 carries per game appears unfounded.
Jul 27 - 8:56 PM

ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner considers Benny Cunningham the favorite to enter 2014 as Zac Stacy's primary backup.

As do we. A 2013 undrafted rookie from Middle Tennessee State, Cunningham quietly led the NFL in yards per carry (5.55) among rushers with at least 45 attempts. Cunningham has outplayed Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead, and the Rams won't be aggressively pursuing running backs during the offseason.

Benny Cunningham caught one pass for two yards, but was held without a rushing attempt in St. Louis' Week 17 loss to Seattle.

Undrafted out of Memphis, Cunningham didn't need long to overtake Isaiah Pead and eventually Daryl Richardson to serve as Zac Stacy's top backup. Although Cunningham's fantasy start-ability is fairly dependent on Stacy getting hurt, he's every bit worth rostering in deeper Dynasty leagues. Cunningham's first NFL season ends with 47 rushes for 261 yards and a touchdown, adding six catches. He's likely to return as Stacy's top backup in 2014.

Benny Cunningham rushed two times for 16 yards in Week 13 at San Francisco.

A week after rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown while filling in for a concussed Zac Stacy, Cunningham reverted back to No. 2 duties. Stacy plays nearly every down, so there aren't many others to go around. Cunningham would be the favorite to step in should Stacy ever get hurt again.

Benny Cunningham is the "odds-on favorite" to start this week if Zac Stacy (concussion) can't get cleared.

Cunningham, a rookie out of Middle Tennessee State, went undrafted in April thanks in part to a knee injury that curtailed his final NCAA season. When given opportunities as a Ram, he's shined. Cunningham rushed for 123 yards on 20 preseason carries and has picked up 238 yards with a touchdown on 40 regular season totes. When Stacy went out against the Bears last week, Isaiah Pead didn't even get a touch (Daryl Richardson was a healthy scratch). Cunningham would have an extremely tough matchup at San Francisco if he does get the nod, but he'd still be on the RB2 radar and a candidate for 13-18 touches.

Benny Cunningham rushed 13 times for 109 yards and a touchdown in St. Louis' Week 12 win over the Bears.

Filling in for a concussed Zac Stacy, Cunningham did what every back does against the Bears: Run all over them. Five of Cunningham's carries went for at least 10 yards, while his touchdown was a nine-yard scamper that necessitated a dive to break the plane. The narrow score was upheld on review. Now officially ahead of Daryl Richardson on the depth chart — D-Rich was a healthy scratch against the Bears — Cunningham ran with power and wiggle, getting upfield in a hurry, and shedding some tackles in the process. That being said, he'll be a dicey RB2 for Week 13 against the 49ers if Stacy can't go.

Benny Cunningham rushed seven times for 72 yards in St. Louis' Week 10 win over the Colts, adding one catch for 18 yards.

Cunningham missed a large chunk of the game with an ankle tweak, but returned to kill the clock on St. Louis' final drive, where he ripped off a 56-yard gainer on his first carry since early in the third quarter. Cunningham is pushing Daryl Richardson for No. 2 duties, but isn't a terribly valuable handcuff. He'd likely be part of a committee were Zac Stacy to go down with injury.
