Coach Doug Marrone said after the Jaguars' second preseason game that the left guard job is wide open.
Patrick Omameh was viewed as the heavy favorite when camp started, but he was dreadful this past week in joint practices and the second preseason game against the Bucs. (Playing against DT Gerald McCoy every day will do that.) Marrone has reopened the competition. Luke Bowanko is in the mix. Determined to play power-run football, the Jaguars need good guard play. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone suggested Patrick Omameh will open the season at left guard.

"It’s still too early in camp, but he’s on the right path for what we’re looking for," Marrone said. With Branden Albert gone, second-rounder Cam Robinson is locked into the job at left tackle. That leaves an opening at guard, one Omameh looks destined to fill. Omameh was effective in seven starts at the position last season.

Jaguars re-signed OG Patrick Omameh to a one-year, $775,000 contract.

Signed to a one-year deal last offseason, Omameh went on to make seven starts at left guard and play 454 snaps total. He graded out well in pass protection at Pro Football Focus and figures to be interior depth in 2017, though the Jaguars could give Omameh a crack at earning the starting job.

Jaguars signed OG Patrick Omameh, formerly of the Bears.

The Bears claimed Omameh off waivers from Tampa Bay after final cuts last year and he went on to start nine games, struggling mightily for the second straight season. The 26-year-old will fight for a backup job in Jacksonville.

Bears claimed G Patrick Omameh off waivers from the Bucs.

Omameh struggled as a 16-game starter for Tampa Bay last season, but he could be an eventual option at right guard if the Bears decide to kick Kyle Long outside.

Bucs waived G Patrick Omameh.

Omameh struggled as a 16-game starter for Tampa Bay last season and lost his job to rookie Ali Marpet. He could get a look on waivers from guard-needy teams.

The Tampa Tribune labels Patrick Omameh as the "leader in the race" to be the Bucs' starting right guard.

Omameh (6-foot-4, 305) didn't appear in a game as an undrafted rookie last season after he was signed off the 49ers' practice squad in October. But he was the first-team right guard throughout this week's minicamp and is an extremely smart player. Omameh was offered academic scholarships by Princeton and MIT before going to Michigan on a full-ride. Jamon Meredith and Oniel Cousins are Omameh's competition. Carl Nicks is penciled in at left guard.

Bucs signed OL Patrick Omameh.

Omameh, 23, went undrafted out of Michigan this season and spent the first five weeks on the 49ers practice squad. His signing likely means Carl Nicks (questionable, staph infection) can be ruled out for Week 6. The Bucs will start fill-in Gabe Carimi in his place, with Omameh providing depth at both guard spots.
