The San Jose Mercury News' Cam Inman believes 49ers WR Eric Rogers will win the No. 3 job.
Inman sees Bruce Ellington as the starter opposite Torrey Smith, but he thinks Rogers will be the next man up in three-wide sets, a formation used often by new coach Chip Kelly. Rogers was "clearly ahead" of sophomore DeAndre Smelter during the offseason program, and it would not be surprising if he jumped disappointing fourth-year WR Quinton Patton as well. The former CFL star is a name to watch during camp. Jul 26 - 12:18 PM

CSN Bay Area believes 49ers WR Eric Rogers is "clearly ahead" of 2015 fourth-rounder DeAndre Smelter on the depth chart.

A 2013 undrafted free agent, Rogers starred in Canada the past two seasons. Despite his "clearly ahead" proclamation, reporter Matt Maiocco cautions "the real competition begins once the pads go on during training camp." Rogers is a player to monitor in a fairly wide-open receiver battle in San Francisco.

49ers signed WR Eric Rogers.

Rogers, 25 next month, attended D-3 Cal Lutheran and put up a 91-1,298-18 line as a 2012 senior. At 6'3/210, he ran 4.50 with a 37-inch vertical and 10-foot-1 broad jump at his Pro Day. Rogers ended up going undrafted and spent the 2013 summer in Cowboys camp before getting cut. He's been in the CFL ever since and posted an 87-1,448-10 line with the Calgary Stampeders in 2015, leading the league in yards and touchdowns. The California native is a worthwhile flier with some upside. Rogers visited 16 NFL teams before signing.
