NFLPA* president Kevin Mawae said on Saturday that his decertified union is not pressuring prospects to skip next month's draft.
"We have not boycotted. We have not said you can't go," Mawae said. "But we do want them to seriously consider the idea that the man that you are going to shake hands with on the day you get drafted is the man that is going to prevent you from making a living." It sounds like the pressure is more informal than formal, but it's certainly pressure nonetheless. Players like Cam Newton are going to have an awkward choice to make. Sat, Mar 19, 2011 05:36:00 PM

Former Titans center Kevin Mawae now admits that he had a chance to sign with the 49ers last August when Eric Heitmann suffered a fractured fibula.

Interesting. The NFLPA president complained of a league-wide blackballing leading up to his retirement in September. He cited a combination of "personal and monetary" reasons for declining the Niners' offer, though it didn't change his stance that he'd been blackballed. The 49ers offered him a one-year, $860,000 deal -- the league minimum for a player of 16 years experience.

Former Titans center Kevin Mawae is expected to announce his retirement at a press conference Friday afternoon.

He didn't have much of a choice. The 16-year vet and eight-time Pro Bowler drew no interest on the open market this season, sparking complaints that his work as NFLPA president led to blackballing by NFL teams in a year of labor uncertainty. Despite a final Pro Bowl berth last year, the 39-year-old's play had deteriorated sharply.

Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt said the team will likely not re-sign free agent C Kevin Mawae unless there is an injury.

Early in the offseason, Titans coach Jeff Fisher promised Mawae a roster spot as a backup. But even that opportunity appears to be gone now as Mawae's agent can't get a call back from the Titans. The eight-time Pro Bowler can surely help a team, especially if he's willing to be a reserve/mentor.

The player rep for free agent C Kevin Mawae says his client is "at a standstill" when it comes to choosing a new team.

"We thought he’d hear back from the Titans a few weeks ago and we haven’t heard anything from them," said agent Mark Bartelstein. "We're just kind of waiting to see what's going to happen." Denver showed some interest in Mawae before the draft, but selected Baylor C J.D. Walton in the third round.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher said the team is "in a holding pattern" regarding free agent C Kevin Mawae.

The Titans have already made their move, shifting Eugene Amano to center and installing Leroy Harris at left guard. If Mawae does end up re-signing, he'll be a backup. Mawae's conspiracy theory is that he hasn't gotten any nibbles on the free agent market because he is the president of the NFLPA.

Free agent C Kevin Mawae says he is "befuddled" that no team has signed him yet.

"I just came off my eighth Pro Bowl and a 16-game season and I can't get one phone call," said the 39-year-old. "Alan Fanaca gets cut two days ago and yesterday he signs a contract with another team. And not to take anything away from him, we have the same agent, we're friends. But something tells me that there is something going on beside me just being 39 years old."

The Titans have put contract talks with free agent C Kevin Mawae on hold until after the NFL Draft.

Mawae is still "optimistic" that the sides will reach an agreement at some point. "We'll figure something out," Mawae said. "I'm not in a panic or anything like that." The 39-year-old would return to Tennessee as a reserve.

The contract talks between free agent C Kevin Mawae and the Titans have "turned serious."

At the outset of free agency, Mawae insisted that he would not return to the Titans as a backup. Now it appears that is exactly what he'll do, as Eugene Amaro is penciled in at center with Leroy Harris at left guard.

The player rep for free agent C Kevin Mawae is staying in contact with the Titans.

Mawae has generated no interest on the free agent market after a poor season in both run blocking and pass protection. With Eugene Amano apparently set to start at center, the 39-year-old would return as a backup.

According to the Denver Post, the Broncos are not going to sign free agent C Kevin Mawae.

The 2009 Pro Bowler is said to be too small for Denver's new power-based rushing scheme. Mawae, 39, may have to settle for a backup job elsewhere.

The Broncos have reportedly expressed "some interest" in free agent C Kevin Mawae.

Having lost Casey Weigmann, the Broncos don't have a viable in-house replacement. Mawae, though, is coming off a poor season and turned 39 in late January. Denver may target a legitimate starting center early on draft day.

The Titans remain interested in bringing back free agent C Kevin Mawae if he's willing to accept a backup role.

Mawae has drawn initial interest from "several" teams, but he's determined to take his time in making a decision. Though the 39-year-old still wants a starting job, he admits he'll consider the Titans if no opportunities arise.

The Broncos and Redskins are among the teams believed to be interested in free agent C Kevin Mawae, according to Titans beat writer Jim Wyatt.

Even at age 39, Mawae would provide a steady upgrade for both units. The 2009 Pro Bowler wants an opportunity to start.

Free agent C Kevin Mawae said Friday that he is willing to re-sign with the Titans to be a backup.

Mawae would be a solid stopgap for a team desperate at center, but he clearly wants to stay in Nashville. The team will likely offer him a minimum salary as they move forward with odd-on favorite Leroy Harris in the pivot spot.
