Retired TE Ben Utecht won a $925,000 grievance against the Bengals when an arbitrator ruled a team doctor shouldn't have cleared Utecht to play following a severe training-camp concussion.
Utecht received the balance of his 2009 base salary. At the time, the Bengals released Utecht with an "injury settlement" just over one year into a three-year, $9 million contract. Utecht is now a singer-songwriter at age 32. He claims he's experiencing memory loss due to concussions. Sun, Jul 14, 2013 11:30:00 AM

The Baltimore Sun suggests free agent Ben Utecht as a possible signing for the Ravens if they don't get a top tight end in the draft.

Perhaps the Sun has information on Utecht that we don't, but we get the feeling that the concussion-prone 29-year-old is a serious candidate for retirement. Utecht, cut by the Bengals in November, has drawn no interest.

Bengals placed TE Ben Utecht (concussion) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Utecht suffered a serious concussion early in training camp, and he's still feeling the effects. Since he has a history of concussions and risks long-term damage, Utecht's career could be over.

Bengals TE Ben Utecht was carted off the practice field Wednesday evening, but only diagnosed with a concussion.

The Bengals got lucky. Utecht's neck was immobilized and he went to the hospital, but as a precaution. While he won't miss the season like Reggie Kelly, concussions have long been an issue for Utecht. He's out indefinitely.

The Bengals may ask Ben Utecht to stay on the line and block more after Reggie Kelly's season-ending Achilles' tear.

Utecht's long been a weak blocker, but desperate times call for desperate measures. The 6'6/250-pounder needs to be in the weight room all August.

Ben Utecht tore the plantar fascia in his foot in the Bengals' Week 13 loss.

He is in danger of missing the rest of 2008. Utecht isn't usually quick to recover from injuries and doesn't play much of a role in the team's offense.

Utecht had his best game of the year (three catches for 36 yards) Thursday, which isn't saying much. The $9 million tight end continues to disappoint.

Ben Utecht caught two passes for 21 yards in Week 9 against the Jaguars.

Utecht's numbers will continue to be unimpressive while Ryan Fitzpatrick is quarterbacking. And with Chris Henry back, there just aren't that many targets to go around.
