According to USA Today's Tom Pelissero, Bills coach Sean McDermott will have "shared say" over the team's 53-man roster.
There have been conflicting reports about how much control the Bills' new coach would have over the team's roster. In the end, it appears like McDermott will have at least some influence alongside GM Doug Whaley. McDermott will also have control of the coaching staff, including hiring and firing assistants. The team's biggest roster decision this offseason is what to do with Tyrod Taylor. Jan 12 - 2:03 PM

Bills hired Sean McDermott as their new head coach.

While both have defensive backgrounds, McDermott seems to be about the polar opposite of his predecessor, Rex Ryan. McDermott isn't bringing the flash and flare to Buffalo only to see empty promises follow. The 43-year-old (in March) has been a defensive coordinator for the past eight seasons, working under Andy Reid and legendary DC Jim Johnson in Philadelphia before becoming Ron Rivera's right-hand man in Carolina. He's fully expected to switch Buffalo to a 4-3 front, an idea the Bills' players have been clamoring for since Ryan was fired. McDermott has never been a head coach at any level. Nailing his offensive coordinator choice will be important. He's expected to give ex-Chargers coach Mike McCoy a ring.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott will have his second interview for the Bills' head-coaching vacancy on Wednesday.

He's the first candidate to get a second interview regarding any of the five openings, and all signs point to McDermott hammering out a deal to become the Bills' next head coach. Something could happen Wednesday.
Jan 11 - 9:10 AM

The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci reports the Bills are "zeroed in" on Panthers DC Sean McDermott as their next head coach.

It was reported earlier Tuesday that the Bills were leaning toward McDermott or interim coach Anthony Lynn as their replacement for Rex Ryan. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora added that owners Terry and Kim Pegula are "very intrigued" by McDermott. Carucci reports something could be done in the next day or two. McDermott, 43 in March, has never been a head coach at any level.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott is interviewing for the 49ers' head coaching vacancy on Tuesday.

McDermott interviewed with the Bills last week and is expected to meet with the Chargers as well. The Bills were reportedly "super impressed" by McDermott, and he could be in a two-horse race with interim coach Anthony Lynn for the Buffalo job. It looks like McDermott has a real shot to finally land a lead job this cycle.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott will interview for the 49ers' head-coaching vacancy on Sunday.

McDermott interviewed with the Bills on Wednesday and is slated to meet with Chargers brass later this week. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Bills hope to interview Panthers DC Sean McDermott for their head-coaching vacancy.

McDermott was a head-coaching candidate in 2016, as well, and didn't hurt his stock this season. The Panthers' defense fell off from its Super Bowl level, but after the first 4-5 weeks of the year, was not the disappointing Panthers' problem.
Jan 2 - 3:01 PM

According to NFL.com's Albert Breer, Panthers DC Sean McDermott's interview for the Buccaneers' head coaching position went "very, very well."

It doesn't matter now since the Bucs ended up hiring Dirk Koetter, but Breer suspects McDermott will be "at the very top of 2017 search lists." Teams went coordinator-heavy in their head coaching hires this offseason and the same could happen again in 2017. When it's time for the next round of head coaching hires, McDermott should be just as coveted as Adam Gase was this season.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott will interview for the Bucs' head-coaching vacancy this weekend.

McDermott is also scheduled to meet with the Browns. Current Bucs OC Dirk Koetter is believed to be the favorite for the job, but McDermott and GM Jason Licht worked together in Philadelphia. McDermott would be a strong candidate if the Bucs decide to bring in yet another defensive minded coach.

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano reports the Giants will interview Panthers DC Sean McDermott for their head-coaching vacancy.

McDermott is eligible to do interviews this week because the Panthers earned a first-round bye. He has NFC East roots after spending 12 seasons with the Eagles from 1999-2010. McDermott was fired when coach Andy Reid left town and has been coordinating the Panthers' defense ever since. He's expressed interest in the Eagles' opening and will interview with the Browns.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Panthers DC Sean McDermott will interview for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy Thursday.

Not taking the same route as Panthers OC Mike Shula, McDermott is making the most of his window to interview this week. McDermott also expressed interest in the Eagles' job in a radio interview Tuesday morning, but no interview has been reported. McDermott is a good bet to get a promotion this cycle.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott expressed his interest in the Eagles' coaching vacancy.

"I love the Philadelphia area and quite honestly it’s been tough to watch the last several years, having grown up in the area and worked there for 12 years," McDermott said on a local Philadelphia radio show Tuesday morning. "I’d love to see the Eagles recapture the magic so to speak." McDermott was groomed under former Eagles DC Jim Johnson and took over as defensive coordinator after Johnson's untimely death in 2009. McDermott has been the Panthers DC since 2011. He is a safe bet to land a head coach job this offseason.
