Broncos defenders credited DC Wade Phillips for their success this season.
"He ain't scared," cornerback Aqib Talib said. "Sometimes defensive coordinators get scared and make their players scared because they call scary coverages. But Wade [lays it out] all the time and makes us stand up, and we do it. The difference between this year and past years is [Wade]." One of the best defensive coordinators to ever call a game, Phillips is still going strong at 68. He will give Tom Brady all he can handle in the AFC Championship. Jan 19 - 11:52 AM

Broncos hired Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.

Everyone except irrational Cowboys fans seems to realize how great a coach and defensive mind Phillips is. This is a fantastic hire for the Broncos, who reunite Gary Kubiak with Phillips after the two teamed to turn the Texans into a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the early 2010s. Phillips runs an aggressive "one-gap" 3-4 defense, which will play to the edge-rushing strengths of Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Outgoing DC Jack Del Rio essentially refused to blitz in 2014, and ultimately failed to maximize Denver's otherworldly defensive talent.

The Broncos are interviewing Wade Phillips for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

67-year-old Phillips is the best candidate on the market. His most recent defensive coordinator work came in Houston under new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, where Phillips inherited the league's No. 30 unit in 2011 and turned them into an annual top-7 group. Phillips was also John Elway's head coach from 1993-94. He should jump at the chance to work with a talented defense headlined by Von Miller, Chris Harris, Aqib Talib and DeMarcus Ware.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold passes along "buzz" from the Senior Bowl that Wade Phillips is a candidate for the Broncos' defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Redskins surprisingly chose Joe Barry over Phillips despite their respective track records; Barry has been highly unsuccessful as a defensive coordinator in the past, whilst the opposite can be said of Phillips. Phillips worked under Gary Kubiak in Houston and is a logical fit in Denver.

ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson is "hearing" ex-Texans DC Wade Phillips "could get play" from the Raiders and Broncos for their defensive-coordinator vacancies.

Phillips, 67, was in the mix for the Redskins' DC job, but was passed over in favor of Joe Barry. Phillips coordinated new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak's defenses in Houston for three seasons from 2011-2013, leading them to three top-10 finishes in total defense. Phillips would be an excellent hire for either team.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora passes along a "strong sense" at Redskins headquarters that Wade Phillips is "well positioned" to replace Jim Haslett as defensive coordinator.

Per La Canfora, Phillips has "ample support." The root of that support is likely from Redskins senior executive A.J. Smith, who is gaining power in the Skins' front office and has worked with Phillips extensively in the past. Smith was infamously nicknamed the "Lord of No Rings" during his stint as the Chargers' GM. Either way, Phillips would be an excellent hire for the Redskins.

The Redskins will interview former Cowboys coach Wade Phillips for their open defensive coordinator position.

Turning 68 before next season, Phillips makes a lot of sense as Jim Haslett's replacement. Phillips runs a 3-4 and knows Redskins executive A.J. Smith from their time together in Buffalo and San Diego. Phillips has not had much success as a head coach, but he has been a very successful defensive coordinator at every stop. He most recently led the Texans to three top-ten total defense performances from 2011-13. Washington will also interview 49ers DBs coach Ed Donatell on Wednesday.

Texans fired coordinators Wade Phillips and Rick Dennison.

The moves were fully expected after the Bill O'Brien hire. Phillips wound up spending three years as the Texans' defensive coordinator, leading units that ranked Nos. 2, 7 and 7 in the NFL in total defense. Still a fabulous coach at age 66, Phillips shouldn't have trouble landing a coordinator job elsewhere, perhaps even in Dallas, where he was head coach before landing in Houston. The Texans are tentatively expected to replace Phillips with Romeo Crennel.
