According to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez, all but one of the defenses new Rams DC Wade Phillips has coached has improved in his first season on the job.
Gonzalez used Football Outsiders' DVOA, yards allowed, and points allowed to make his point. The Rams finished 15th, 9th, and 23rd respectively in those categories last season. Los Angeles has questions in the secondary, but Phillips is one of the best coordinators in NFL history and has the record to prove it. The defense should take a step forward this year. Rams hired Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.

It's a massive get for the resetting Rams. The Rams went bold at head coach, hiring 30-year-old Sean McVay. Phillips and his decades of NFL experience is the perfect counterweight, especially since he spent the past two years coordinating the most fearsome defense in the league. Born two years after World War II, Phillips will be working for someone who graduated high school in 2004. It's an awkward fit on paper, but Phillips has some talented players to work with, most notably perennial DPOY candidate Aaron Donald. If nothing else, there will be immediate improvement/increased consistency on Jeff Fisher's stunningly undisciplined unit.

NBC Washington reports Wade Phillips will interview for the Redskins' defensive coordinator vacancy on Friday.

The growing narrative had been that Phillips would be joining ex-Redskins OC Sean McVay in Los Angeles, but instead he's talking with McVay's old team. Phillips would be a huge get for a Redskins defense that underachieved in 2016, and placed too much pressure on the offense.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports new Rams coach Sean McVay is "hoping" to hire Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.

Going on 70, Phillips remains one of the most respected defensive minds in the league. He'd be inheriting some highly-intriguing pieces in Los Angeles, though also many more holes than he had in Denver. Phillips also employs a 3-4 defense, while the Rams were 4-3 under coaches Jeff Fisher and Gregg Williams.
Jan 12 - 4:23 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports if Redskins OC Sean McVay lands the Rams' head-coaching job, his top choice for defensive coordinator would be Wade Phillips.

That would be reason enough for the Rams to want to pull the trigger on McVay. On a serious note, Phillips obviously is one of the premier defensive minds in the league, even as he closes in on his 70th birthday. He's not expected back in Denver with Dolphins DC Vance Joseph looking extremely likely to land the head-coach job. We'd love to see Robert Quinn and Aaron Donald under Phillips' guidance. McVay is interviewing for the Rams' job for a second time Wednesday.

USA Today's Tom Pelissero suggests DC Wade Phillips could land with the Raiders this offseason.

Phillips is going to draw interest from multiple teams with his contract expiring. He's not expected to be retained if Denver brings in a defensive-minded coach. The Raiders are a questionable fit for Phillips under Jack Del Rio, who has a strong say in playcalling. Phillips has also been linked to the Browns.

SiriusXM NFL Radio's Alex Marvez reports Dolphins DC Vance Joseph will not retain DC Wade Phillips if he gets the Broncos' coaching job.

Marvez has reported Joseph is the favorite to replace Gary Kubiak. Per Marvez, Joseph would promote Broncos DBs coach Joe Woods to defensive coordinator. It's likely that Joseph would more or less operate as his own defensive boss.
Jan 5 - 4:34 PM

Broncos GM John Elway said no one on the current staff is a candidate for the head coaching vacancy.

Wade Phillips has years of head coaching experience and is well liked by the roster, but he is a much better fit in the coordinator role. The Broncos would almost certainly like to keep him in that job in the new staff, but Elway said Phillips' future will be decided by the next coach. Going on 70, Phillips is not currently under contract.
Jan 2 - 1:13 PM

USA Today reports Broncos DC Wade Phillips' contract will expire at season's end.

Per reporter Tom Pelissero, the sides had extension talks after last season's Super Bowl victory, but couldn't come to an agreement. Phillips turns 70 next year, but has given no indication he's planning to retire. It's hard to believe Phillips won't end up back with the Broncos.

Broncos DC Wade Phillips was back at work on Monday.

The 69-year-old coordinator had to be carted off the field Sunday, but escaped with only a scare. Phillips' presence is what took the Broncos' defense to the next level the past two seasons. He's one of the league's most important assistants.

Broncos DC Wade Phillips was hospitalized after a sideline collision in Sunday's Week 8 game against the Chargers.

Phillips appeared to be watching a play on the sideline when Melvin Gordon ran into him on the sideline, apparently knocking Phillips temporarily unconscious. He had to be stretchered off, but promisingly gave a thumbs up on his way off the field. LBs coach Reggie Herring is now calling the Broncos' defensive plays.

Broncos defenders credited DC Wade Phillips for their success this season.

"He ain't scared," cornerback Aqib Talib said. "Sometimes defensive coordinators get scared and make their players scared because they call scary coverages. But Wade [lays it out] all the time and makes us stand up, and we do it. The difference between this year and past years is [Wade]." One of the best defensive coordinators to ever call a game, Phillips is still going strong at 68. He will give Tom Brady all he can handle in the AFC Championship.

Broncos hired Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.

Everyone except irrational Cowboys fans seems to realize how great a coach and defensive mind Phillips is. This is a fantastic hire for the Broncos, who reunite Gary Kubiak with Phillips after the two teamed to turn the Texans into a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the early 2010s. Phillips runs an aggressive "one-gap" 3-4 defense, which will play to the edge-rushing strengths of Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Outgoing DC Jack Del Rio essentially refused to blitz in 2014, and ultimately failed to maximize Denver's otherworldly defensive talent.

The Broncos are interviewing Wade Phillips for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

67-year-old Phillips is the best candidate on the market. His most recent defensive coordinator work came in Houston under new Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, where Phillips inherited the league's No. 30 unit in 2011 and turned them into an annual top-7 group. Phillips was also John Elway's head coach from 1993-94. He should jump at the chance to work with a talented defense headlined by Von Miller, Chris Harris, Aqib Talib and DeMarcus Ware.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold passes along "buzz" from the Senior Bowl that Wade Phillips is a candidate for the Broncos' defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Redskins surprisingly chose Joe Barry over Phillips despite their respective track records; Barry has been highly unsuccessful as a defensive coordinator in the past, whilst the opposite can be said of Phillips. Phillips worked under Gary Kubiak in Houston and is a logical fit in Denver.
